Chronic Illness: When We Don’t Know What’s to Come

posted by mpratt

Yesterday was a tough doctor day for me. I had to have retests of my retinas for a problem that may or may not be related to one of the medications I take to treat lupus and keep it (moderately) at bay. Unfortunately, the tests were, once again, abnormal, and I’ll be seeing another doc tomorrow to talk over what to do now that I cannot take the medication. The retina problem may or may not improve, the new meds may or may not help the lupus, and there may or may not be new side effects to deal with. So much is unknown!

This uncertainty is not, by any means, confined to those of us with chronic illnesses. In fact, everyone lives with small or large question marks punctuating parts of their lives. As with “waiting for the cure,” worrying about the future is one of those things that can distance us from the deeper point, which is that, as long as we keep working at prayer and drawing closer to God, we will develop peace of heart and soul that transcends worry, fear, and anxiety about the future. God is in control “through it all,” every step, and He carries our burdens, too.

It’s not easy to be a patient patient. And it’s not easy to have a whole bagful of “may or may nots” looming in the days to come. No, it’s never easy. But, then, life isn’t easy, either, and yet it has all kinds of graces and beauty and blessings and these, too, will not cease to be in the face of new challenges to come.

Blessings for the day!

Maureen
