Willard Wigans

Willard Wigans was born with a learning disability and as a child he often felt small and insignificant. That set him on a life’s mission to prove that there could be immense beauty in something that was so small that the human eye could not even see it. He decided to express himself through art, more specifically, sculpture. His medium of choice was not clay,  brass or stone, he chose the smallest thing he could find, individual grains of sand.

As impossible as it is to comprehend, he’s sculpted entire worlds inside the eyes of needles. Since no tools exist for this kind of sculpting, he made his own. He paints his sculptures with a single hair plucked off the back of a house fly. It’s astounding and hard to comprehend, in fact, his sculptures can only be seen under a microscope.

Not only has Willard accomplished what he set out to do, he’s rocketed to super stardom. He’s now a millionaire and if you want one of his pieces you’ll have to spend months on a waiting list. It’s amazing to think, that this supposedly simple man has now been noticed by the entire world and how’s he’s done it, is by creating something that people can’t even see. There’s a lesson here for all of us, in how we treat people and how we can overcome anything. Thank you Willard!
