Davone BessA few years ago Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess was a mess. He had a troubled youth that resulted in a two year stint in juvenile detention and cost him a scholarship to Oregon State University. The University of Hawaii gave him a second chance and he’s made the most of it. He’s dramatically turned his life around and started a foundation to help kids just like him, kids who need sports to keep them out of trouble. He’s also doing everything he can to help those in need around the world. While the NFL sits in lockout and while most the media is focused on millionaires fighting over who gets to keep more of the millions, Davone decided to go dig ditches for those in need in Costa Rica.

“I had an epiphany one night. With all I’ve been through on and off the field God has put me in a position to be a difference maker and to change lives,” Bess told Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel. “If I can help someone make a difference and impact someone’s life I want to do that to the best of my ability.” According to the locals, Bess has been the hardest worker from the group who is down there helping. “Once I set my mind to something I go hard at it. With my story and what I’ve been through I’m able to give back and give kids a message about who I am and what I overcame,” Bess said. “If I can do it, you can do it too. If I can make a difference so can you.”
