Guest blogger Jaime Jamgochian shares some thoughts about modesty

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 12:15pm Thursday August 21, 2008

First, I want to thank all the Jonas Brothers fans who took time to comment on my post, “5 Things I Hate About The Jonas Brothers.”
I asked my friend, worship artist Jaime Jamgochian, to read my post and all of your comments. Jaime holds Modest is Hottest conferences across the U.S. where she talks with girls about purity and modesty. I thought it would be good to get her thoughts on the subject of modesty, considering how “hot” (pun intended) the topic is right now.
Here are Jaime’s thoughts on the subject …

I will be the first to admit I know VERY little about the Jonas Brothers as people. I have heard their cute, catchy pop songs, was told they are strong Christians, and have seen them on the cover of some magazines at the airport as I am waiting for a flight. They look like nice guys.
Working with teens quite a bit I always hear about them, though, and I have often though wondered why they have to look “sexy” in some pictures instead of just smiling or what not.
This whole conversation, though, really makes me even more passionate about something I feel so strongly about: purity and modesty.
I sell some shirts while touring and speak on something I believe in. This is more then a catchy phrase or slogan but something I think we can live out: “Modest Is Hottest.”
YES…I am using the word “hot” here and I mean it in a very non-lustful way. I feel there is a new generation being raised up that wants to respect themselves, their faith in God, their own bodies and live in a way that basically says, “I do not have to show you everything I’ve got to be beautiful.”
Modesty and purity are about so much more then how we dress or if we wear a ring that signifies we will not have sex until we are married. It all has to do with the heart which reflects the thoughts we think and then our actions.
I am seeing a new generation being raised up that not only believes “Modest Is Hottest” but they live it.
I can remember when I was a teenage girl – man that feels like forever ago! There were so many choices that I needed to make in middle school and high school! Think back, my friends … remember those years when you started to get pimples on your face and had no idea how these little critters could invade your life so much? Or what about the fact that your body was changing and you had no control over it? Remember all the different styles we thought were so, so cool! Back in my day it was the pegged jeans with the perfectly poofed bangs…YUP!
Well once I hit college those decisions and choices began to get a lot harder. I cannot say that I made all the “right” decisions in the eyes of God, but I can say that I now believe that you can live your life one of two ways”
1. Believing who God says you are and living to please Him,
OR
2. Believing what the media and the world says you need to look and live like
At 21, during my senior year of college, I came to know Jesus, for the first time. As you can imagine, my world was rocked! All of a sudden I wanted to please God more then I wanted to be popular or have the coolest outfit. Now please don’t get me wrong. I love trendy, cute clothes and love to shop, BUT I also believe that you don’t have to show everything you got to be hot! (modern day language) I want to dress in a way that glorifies GOD!
My favorite scripture is Psalm 139:14 – “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14)
Do you believe that? I believe we can live in a way that shows we are secure in who God says we are. That is then reflected in every area of our lives. The way we talk, walk, who we hang out with, relationships, purity before the Lord in dating relationships and yes, the way we dress.
Because MODEST IS HOTTEST!!
