Was Britney Spears a Christian singer?

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 8:56am Wednesday September 10, 2008

BritneySpearsJonasBrothers.jpgI stumbled across this piece of news this morning at monstersandcritics.com:
Apparently the Jonas Brothers got to meet their “idol” Britney Spears at the MTV video music awards on Sunday, and a “backstage source” reports:

“They all looked so excited to see Britney and meet her, and she was thrilled too. She seemed to be reminiscing about her own start in the music industry – she began as a Christian singer, just as the Jonas Brothers are doing.”

Wait. Britney Spears started as a Christian singer? Fill me in, Britney fans.
Poor Britney. That poor girl was chewed up and spit out by the music industry, and everyone who gawked at her like a train wreck and poured good money down the toilet to keep the tabloid rags seeking more sensational pics helped the process along. My heart breaks for her.
Hey Jonas Brothers – it’s a good thing that you got to meet Britney. Make sure you tell her God loves her, has a wonderful plan for her life, and that there are a lot of us praying for her.

I want Brittany to know that God still loves her,and that she needs to give her life to the lord. The enemy desires to destroy her.God really do have a plan for her and a great call on her life to be a powerful woman of God.

I have prayed for Britney and I think God is moving in her life. I have bipolar disorder like she does and I could tell way before she was diagnosed that she suffered from it as well. It was obvious to me. I am so glad her father stepped in and took over for her when she was sick. She had so many bad people around her and others who simply wanted to bring her down. Why? She is a human being, for crying out loud! She made mistakes and though being Bipolar is not an all-out excuse it DOES explain her behavior. Now that she is getting help, she has the opportunity to be a role model for people with mental illness, and kids who feel badly about themselves. God has used my illness to help others and Britney’s celeb status could be a phenomenal advantage for her.
I will not judge her and say she does not know Christ. I know people who have backslid and did all kinds of stupid stuff, and God pulled them back before they self-destructed. Perhaps this is what has happened to Britney. I pray that it is.
Hang in there Brit. I am praying for you!

Thanks, Tony. Actually, if you go to this post
http://blog.beliefnet.com/gospelsoundcheck/2008/08/5_things_i_hate_about_the_jona_comments.html
and read down to the almost last comments I respond to an assertion from a reader who was adamant that the JoBros never released an album in the Christian market. Except I was there for the promotion of the album during Gospel Music Week. :)
I appreciate the trust – I do a lot of fact checking and research, and while I can’t promise I won’t ever get stuff wrong I certainly try to live above the celebrity spin cycle, which I hate.
All the best!

Their first album, It’s About Time, was released to the Christian market in 2006 under a dual contract with INO and Columbia. I met them at Gospel Music Week in Nashville in 2006, where they were doing promo for the project to Christian media. They played some Christian venues but their career really picked up with Columbia’s promotion to mainstream.
Nick actually got the whole JoBros ball rolling, when he did his solo album, at the age of I think 12 or 13. The album was recorded (I have the mastered pre-release) but I don’t think it actually made it to consumers. The label heard the brothers perform and thought that was a better act, from what I understand.
The term “gospel” has actually been used for a while to mean any form of Christian music, from gospel to Christian rock and pop.
Hope that helps!

If you’re asking “was Britney a Christian when she started” than, yes, she was. She never released any Christian albums that I am aware of though.

Your Name

I’m less worried for Britney than I am the Jonas Brothers if they consider her to be kindred. If they look up to her as much as it appears, they may be heading down the same path before long. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed, lest he fall. The industry is more seductive than it appears, and it appears pretty darn seductive.
I found the following on a blog called “fearless witness and thought it was incredibly applicable to the ‘witness’ encouragement given at the end of the article. You may or may not agree. :)
“God has a wonderful plan for your life. Tell that to the millions of Christians in the world who are beaten, thrown in jail, shot, stabbed, and burned, simply for proclaiming the name of Christ.
Nowhere does the Bible promise a wonderful life to those who come to Christ. We are given something infinitely better. A new heart. Forgiveness of sins past, present, and future. Is the gospel not enough? Is being saved from hell and our depraved nature and rebellion against God not enough? Do we view the gospel so lowly that we have to promise a sinner more than what the Lord already promises?”
Speak the truth, God will honor it. Salvation is of the Lord, so our ‘convincing’ avails little, if any.
