Jazz Gospel Central launches new site

JazzGospelCentral.jpgI stumbled across a new website today, JazzGospelCentral.com, which is a great meeting place for jazz and gospel music. I love it – it’s soothing, and spirited, and soulful.
I think it’s a great reminder that music that overflows from a spirit connected to the Creator doesn’t need words to be “Christian”.
But what do you think? Can instrumental music be pegged “Christian” or “mainstream?”

This has been an on-going debate for years. I think that the ‘Christian-ness’ of instrumental music can only be determined by the intent of the composer, since the notes and time signatures are neutral in and of themselves. The dilema, then, is ‘what does the listener take to the music?’ Wagner was Hitler’s favorite composer… what does this mean in terms of, let’s say, a holocaust survivor’s impression of a piece by the same composer? Sometimes our knowledge of periferral issues can color our perceptions of a piece of artwork. Naturally, this all goes out the window if the composition is titled, “God Killers” or the equivalent – in that case, I think common sense takes over. Still, I’ve been moved by the beauty of certain instrumental music created by people who I know were not Spiritually motivated.
