Rev. Robert H Schuller asks son to step down from Hour of Power

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 8:00am Monday October 27, 2008

Reverend Robert H. Schuller, founder of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, has announced that he removed his son, Robert A., from his preaching duties on the church’s weekly “Hour of Power” syndicated TV broadcast. In a letter on the Crystal Cathedral website, the elder Rev. Schuller explains that he and his son “have been struggling as we each have different ideas as to the direction and the vision for this ministry as we move into the future.” As the lack of a unified vision has grown, Schuller felt it necessary to ask his son to step down.Citing Ephesians 4, Schuller says that he plans to have guest pastors from other large ministries – including Bill Hybels of Willow Creek Community Church, Kirbyjon Caldwell of Windsor Village United Methodist Church, and evangelist Juan Carlos Ortiz, credited for influencing the revivals currently sweeping Latin America. Walt Kallestad of Community Church of Joy in Glendale, Arizona is scheduled to preach this Sunday. The “Hour of Power” weekly television broadcast has played host to Christian music artists like Matthew West, Laura Story (featured in the above video with Rev. Robert A Schuller) and Phil Stacey, giving them an opportunity to share their testimonies as well as their music with a large television audience. For more about the Hour of Power, and to read transcripts of artist interviews, visit the Crystal Cathedral website.Check out the Joanne Brokaw’s “Christian Music Year In Review,” a look back at the stories you were talking about on the Gospel Soundcheck blog.

Arguments in the church are heart breaking for those involved. Leadership transparency must be the key to reconciliation for the whole congregation otherwise mistrust will develop. Too much “ear tickling” is going on in that ministry anyway…much like Joel Osteen. Examine your preacher: is the message Bible based and Christ centered? Strengthen your discernment by spending time in His Word and the Holy Spirit will show you God’s unmistakably clear will.

This is a split of biblical proportion. What single disagreement could cause such a decision? Given Proposition 8 in California, could the son have been harboring the view that it was now time for the Crystal Cathedral to begin to recognize gay marriage? I wonder if the son, like some staunch republicans is a closeted gay? No offense intended, but these are questions many will have until the facts are known.

Obviously the father and son have differences. One report indicated that the son used more scripture than did his father. Frank is of the opinion the Bible is out psychology is in, at least for him.
Rather than spreading scandalous innuendoes as Greg has, Steve’s admonition would be good to heed.

I’ve noticed and have been concerned about Robert’s absence in the last month. I’m very sad to hear of this outcome. I can only imagine the heartbreak that is going on in the Schuller family. Rather than taking sides and coming up with pointed comments, we should be praying that they may be reconciled as a family and hopefully as leaders of a congregation that looks to them for direction. Using their own words,
I would say, “God loves you and so do I” to each of them. I wish they would say that to each other, too.

The schism between the Rev. Robert H. Schuller and his son at Orange County’s Crystal Cathedral arose over a disagreement about broadening the church’s long-running television show, “Hour of Power,” beyond a single personality — a move opposed by the younger Schuller, pastors involved in the matter said Sunday.
The elder Schuller announced Saturday that he was removing his son, the Rev. Robert A. Schuller, as the show’s only preacher three years after turning the program over to him.
Rev. Robert H. Schuller ousts his son as…The show will now be hosted by different pastors, and even businessmen, from around the country and Latin America.
“Hour of Power,” which reaches 20 million people worldwide, had not been revamped in many years, according to those familiar with it.
Robert H. Schuller obliquely addressed the change during a service Sunday.
Though never referring directly to his son, he said the long-term survival of his ministry was dependent on expanding its imprint beyond the Schuller name.
“The real minister’s name that we honor is Jesus, not Schuller,” he said to thunderous applause.
Schuller built his worldwide ministry over a half century on the psychology of positive thinking and appealing to people turned off by the formality of traditional faiths. In contrast, his son’s sermons have been full of direct references to the Bible.
“I was called to start a mission, not a church,” Schuller told his audience Sunday. “There is a difference. . . . You don’t try to preach . . . what is sin and what isn’t sin. A mission is a place where you ask nonbelievers to come and find faith and hope and feel love. We’re a mission first, a church second.”
Schuller said he hoped “Hour of Power,” now in its 39th year, would go on “for decades, centuries to come. Because of that, we don’t want one face . . . to be a spokesman.”
When he finished, he received a standing ovation. He sat down and dabbed tears from his eyes.
In a brief interview, Schuller said that replacing his son on “Hour of Power,” a formidable fundraising source, had nothing to do with church finances.
——————-
Bottom line – Dad undercut Son from becoming a name brand like Daddy enjoyed being for years…. and tossed him out.
Kind of jerk === but familiy dynamics are odd. Schuller obviously was starting to get upset that his name was becoming associated with his son — who is not quite as telegenic.
Son spent his life supporting Dad.
Dad gave away the family business.
Same old story.

Everyone should pray for God’s will and not man’s will be done for the direction God created the Crystal Cathedral to move toward. Apparently God blessed the church to exist and reach the world from a seemingly impossible idea. So let’s continue to pray with the possibility thinking that the two of them (Robert and his dad, Dr. Schuller), along with their immediate and church family will unite with love and understanding. I have contributed, bought books, materials and listened to his ministry for over 30 years. I have also met Dr.Schuller in person when he spoke at my church, Windsor Village United Methodist Church. I believe the outcome will be the honorable decision for expressing the power and miracleous healing God will create: for everyone to observe blessings from seemingly troubled occurrences in our life. I will continue to pray for unity and love as we all inspire people to faithfully trust God at his word as in Proverbs 20:24, “Since the Lord is directing our steps, why try to understand everything that happens along the way?”

Last Sunday it took all the preaching time to get one little thought across. It’s like he turned the church over to his son,but would’nt let go. Young Robert was for real-no big robes,no florishes, and he reached out to the people. Young Robert was not a showman, he was a preacher and a good one. Visiting ministers don’t interest me. Thank you for listening, Joan Frye

I can see Gods work in this decision. Sometimes when things end, better things are born. As for Schuller’s son, he revived the Hour of Power when he was handed the podium, and I believe that he would have a great following if he started his own television ministry. This would give him the freedom to lead as God leads his spirit, rather than in the wishes of those who controlled the church with the podium he has stood behind these past 3 years. This could be a liberation that could help liberate many more in the name of Christ.
I also appreciate what the elder Schullers is saying in, “The real minister’s name that we honor is Jesus, not Schuller” and understand what he wishes to do.
I believe his son agrees. He is a mature and wonderful man, strong enough to start his own church. He has many followers who enjoy his style vs. his dads. That’s the beauty of the different churches or different ways of worship. We need all kinds to find the right one for each one of us.
I wish them both well and pray for their future in closeness and love. Maybe now that this sea has been parted, they will be able to move forward in each of their respective purposes and have a brighter future, as father and son. Maybe this new perspective of one another will give them renewed interest in each others projects.

I’m in total support of the Board of Directors of the Crystal Cathedral making the decision THEY did to remove RAS. I love the positive thinking plus biblical messages evoked through Robert H. Schuller’s style of ministry. They have attracted those who would otherwise have never been attracted to Jesus through straight bibical-only televangelism. Myself included, who is today a devout Christian, and a positive thinking one at that thanks to Robert H. Schuller.
I look forward to more of the Norm Vincent Peale type messages on Sunday that grew this church to what it is in the first place. How can anyone knock the success of Robert H. Schuller and his brilliant approach to non-traditional televangelism? It obviously works! I was thrilled whenever Robert H took to the pulpit again on a Sunday. I appreciate his style far over his son’s.

I have no information regarding the issue between the Doctors Schuller. However, the Crystal Cathedral is a member of the Reformed Church in America and the Schullers are ordained clergy of the denomination. The Board of Elders is responsible for calling, dismissing, or closing the pulpit to the ministers of any Reformed Church congregation, including the Crystal Cathedral.* (This does not apply to clergy who are hired as exempt staff).
While there is a symbiotic relationship between the “Hour of Power” and the Crystal Cathedral congregation, they are two distinct entities. It appears it was the Board of Directors of the “Hour of Power” who dismissed Robert A. Schuller from the televised ministry.
Unless there was a request from the younger Schuller to be relieved from preaching or the Board of Elders closed the pulpit to him for moral or doctrinal reasons, he is still able to preach, teach, and lead the congregation. He would only be restricted from the televised services. According to the report, he remains the senior minister of the congregation.
In the event the Board of Elders removed Robert A. Schuller from the pulpit contrary to the Constitution of the Reformed Church in America, he can appeal the decision to the Classis (regional RCA judicatory) of California.
*(The “Crystal Cathedral” is a symbolic name; it used to be the Garden Grove Reformed Church. The Reformed Church does not have bishops, therefore the denomination has no ecclesiastical “cathedrals”)

When the elder prevents the junior from preaching against sin and the consequences of such he is jeopardizing the entire ministry. How can God continue to bless a ministry that only preaches the warm and fuzzy parts of the Bible? Jesus spoke about Hell more than any other topic during His earthly ministry, we know that didn’t make Him too popular with the church leaders of His day either, but it did make Him pretty popular with His Father. Obeying God and winning Heaven or obeying your earthly human father while failing to preach the whole Gospel and losing the reward of Heaven, I do believe that Robert A. made the right choice, he will continue to be in my prayers as I know that God will use him greatly to further the message of the Gospel because he made the choice to put proclaiming the truth of the Gospel ahead of television ratings. The Gospel is not about telling people what they want to hear, it is about telling people what they need to hear. Apparently the elder Schuller doesn’t get that part.
Blessings on Robert A. as he goes forward in ministry to preach the true message of Christ.

Schuller brought a solid gospel message with the honor and integrity of a Christ centered life. I believe this action has hurt the heart of Christ and the ministry will lose the authentic Biblical christian impct Robert A. was bringing to it.

A secret board meeting ousted RA. Some who agreed with RA have since been fired…but you will be told it was budget cuts. RH son-in-laws made themselves president,CEO, CFo, so when you hear the president read the letter…that was RH Schullers son-in-law.
I started at the Church 35 years ago. Robert A and his team that he hired are the best things that have happened to that church since RH built a stupid building to house his Museum to himself ($$$$$$$$$) and then let his daughter do a rediculous, worse show I have ever seen…Creation! Membership fell when he announced the new building, and fell more since Creation (it really was awful…and of course the child star was Schullers grandson…no nepotism at this church.) When Schuller couldn’t get the numbers back up because all he talks about is Russia, etc. he turned it over to his son. It all sounded unconditional…but guess Robert A didn’t have the authority to walk in his own shoes. Poor Robert, he had to deal with declining membership he inherited from his father, plus people always leave with the old leadership leaves. He was just coming into his own. You could see happy people on campus. We actually had ministers that would talk to the congregants…Dr. Schuller is always surrounded by body guards and security…rarely does he give anyone even a small hi. He’s all about celebrity. ANyways,my opinion…the son-in-laws are interested in their inheritances. So afraid they would lose money if Hour of Power went on line rather than just TV…so much for being a mission church. Let’s spend and make millions to spread the word rather than spread it relatively inexpensive in comparison.

It is disappointing that Dr. Robert A. Schuller Jr. is no longer associated with Crystal Cathederal.
My husband and I have been watching this show on and off for the last 10+ years. We have just becoming accustomed to Dr. R Schuller Jr. in the past couple of years. We saw him improved on his sermons dramatically in the past year. We feel that he gave enough in-depth insight to the gospel that we will continue to watch. We feel that everyone should walk in their own shoes. We believed in him and his message. God will continue to help all of us to continue to do so.
Prior to that, we watched Dr. R. Schuller Sr.. We thought he was good in getting people inolved with church initially. However, due to lack of substance in studying the gospel, we end up going elsewhere to receive that. For new christians, I believe Dr. R. Schuller Sr. would be ideal.
However, for long time believers, we need just a bit more. We need to learn about God’s words and teaching.
As a result, I think there is a great potential opportunity to provide both. We surely can have one on T.V. and one on the internet. There is no reason why the two can’t co-exist.
Just remember Dr. R. Schuller Sr. If you cannot unite your own family, how will you unite others and the churches of the world?
I really think this matter should not be what you believe it should be but what God believes. So, does God tell you to be proud of those preachers? Does God not tell you to be proud of your own son? I am very proud of him – he has come a very long way.

It is a shame that this conflict has come about, but I think Robert Sr. is moving in the right direction.
We need to become ‘includists’ instead of ‘excludists’. The world is a very big place and we need to include everyone. Reaching out to others of differing Christian beliefs, and even non Christians, helps us to find what we all have in common. We can no longer have the mind set of “it’s my way, or the highway”, or “we’re right and everyone else is wrong”. We are the brother and sisterhood of the human race.
Change is very hard, but sometimes it’s for the best. We may not know what ‘the best’ is now, but it will be revealed in God’s own time.

Robert A. Schuller Jr was doing a terrific job! If you want to keep your Crystal Cathedral running well into the future then you will have to be more honest with your congregation and television viewers. What did Robert Anthony Schuller Jr do that was so detrimental to the Church? I have been watching the Crystal Cathedral for over 20 years and have even brought other people to it. This morning watching the service I have come away feeling like I was duped! I do not believe God works this way and shuns people for their beliefs. To tell the congregation/television viewers it was the Board of Directors who made this decision is not being truthful. If they did in fact make the decision then they should all be replaced by honest Christian people. Robert A. Schuller is thrown by the wayside without a truthful explanation and left for the population of the world to think the worst of him. Well I don’t think the worst of him. How could anyone think that when the truth of the matter has not surfaced. When will that happen? The world today is in crisis and then this happens! Who are we to turn to? What direction is the church actually going? This was never explained fully either. A sermon was given today using the words from the Bible and they honestly thought they could pull the wool over the congregation/television viewers eyes by using words from the Bible. NOT!!! Shame to all of you! God will not shut his eyes to any of you, that you can be sure! Faith is not believing God can, it is knowing that He will!! Robert Schuller Sr had his pulpit to stand at and make excuses at the loss of a very good Minister to the Crystal Cathedral. Why was Robert Schuller Jr not given the same opportunity to stand at the pulpit and tell his congregation/television viewers how this came about and why he would no longer be preaching at the Crystal Cathedral? How could his Father,Robert Schuller Sr stand by and let people think the worst of his Son! I am sure Rev.Schuller Sr is better than this and will do the right thing. Do it soon before you see the collapse of the Crystal Cathedral. I am going to continue watching for a few more weeks to see which new direction this church is going.
And………hopefully we will hear the mention of Robert A. Schuller Jr, how he is doing, where he is preaching so that the rest of us can have a choice to go where he is. I have always admired Rev.Schuller Sr’s sermons and only hope that honesty comes back so that I can feel the same way again.
To the congregation. Stand up and be counted, let the Board of Directors know how you feel. Ask questions and let them know that you want to hear honest answers and not words that say nothing!
I pray that this matter can be resolved soon and a Father & Son can have a great relationship again in the future.

I went to the Crystal Cathedral this morning and was amazed. The service was beautiful, but I was amazed at Dr. Schuller. He said he would be ‘hosting’ the Hour of Power and occasionally give a sermon as would his son. If it was only a matter of hosting the program, why couldn’t the son do that. He’s had two years in front of the screen and people were already loving him or beginning to. I asked some questions walking around and an usher said the relationship wasn’t very good between them. He said they couldn’t understand why their son won’t return phone calls. Well, how about you and your son-in-laws just humiliated him WORLD WIDE. ALthough Sr said Jr will remain on as Senior Pastor, what is there for him to do..just teach a Sunday School Class. The church services are televised, so do we wait for a non-televised Sunday. Someone in a rpevious post said the RCA could remove a pastor, and the board is made up of Elders. NOT at the Crystal Cathedral. They break most of the rules as set out by the RCA. In fact, the RCA may have been mad that Jr. was willing to baptize people without going through weeks of classes…much like John the Baptist…the people will come when touched by the Holy SPirit.RCA may also be upset that baptisms and communions are not according to how & when they want it done.
There were no RCA board members, until after they ousted Jr. Most board members aren’t even members of the CC. I think one of the son-in-laws on the board is mennonite or something similar. I do notice if you look at the church bulletin it calls Gretchen a Pastor. In the RCA I thought a pastor was also an Elder…Did she go to seminary, or is the CC, so far out there they will call any family member a Pastor.

Esther Bennet, ditto, ditto, ditto, I am totally with you. I have so missed Schuller Sr. and his positive thinking messages. Joel Olsteen took a leaf from brilliant Dr. Schuller Sr.’s book, and has the largest congregation in the nation. Do you think perhaps Schuller Sr. has had a good idea in leading with posibility thinking messages? Think about it, people? How can you criticize success? How can you?
On another note: Before you condemn the decision of the board of directors of the church for dismissing RAS or even if it was the decision of Schuller Sr. himself—-be aware there is much we do not know. We have no idea what the real reason is—if it is indeed not about a different direction and approach with the ministry. Perhaps RAS has an addiction of some sort? Perhaps its about one of a million and one other things that RAS has been spared the humilation of having revealed. Who really knows? No one on this message board, that’s for sure.
What the church needs most right now is our prayers not condemnation.

I was very much inspired by Robert A. sincerity and messages. I did however question the mass baptisims, but do not know what was in each persons heart. It is easy to get caught up with the congregation and the drama of the moment. I do not know what the churchs position on this is however, but wonder what the position is of having all of the guest speakers from different congregations. There must have been much more involved than that. I am hoping that ego was not one of them. I do not wish to view the telecasts anylonger, and hope that at a latter date I can tune in, and things will be resolved, or at the very least explained to the congregation.

Questions regarding the Reformed Church in America:
1. The Consistory (Board) is made up of Elders and Deacons elected from the congregation. The minister is the president of the Consistory. He or she votes only in the event of a tie. Elders are responsible for supervision of the called ministers of the congregation.
2. The Elders are responsible to insure worship and sacriments are correctly observed. The Elders approve receiveing new members and requests for baptism (infant and adult). The minister cannot take action on these items on his own.
3. The Consistory can delegate certain responsibilities to other committees or boards with membership determinied by the Consistory. Example: It would be possible to have a “Finance Committee” or “Property Committee” to include non-church members. The Consistory can also work with independent boards (Hour of Power) to advance the ministry of the congregation.
4. It has been years since I attended the CC. At that time, only one of the Sunday morning services was recorded for TV. The co-pastors at the time would lead the liturgy and meditations at several of those non-televised services. (Sometimes, the sermon televised was preached to an empty sanctuary during the week and added into Sunday’s service with artful editting.)
5. In the Reformed Church the titles such as the Reverend, Pastor, and Dominie are honorific and hold no statutory authority. The official title of ordained RCA Clergy is Minister of Word and Sacrament. This is confired after seminary and examination by a local Classis. This ordination is recognized by all RCA classes and congregations for the purpose of calling a Minister. One can be a “Commissioned Pastor” of a particular congregation when approved by the Classis during and after supervised training. A person can be a “Minister” of music, education, youth, etc. and not be ordained. According to the 2008 RCA directory, Ms. Penner is not an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament.

The saddest thing in this whole story is the rift between father and son. I keep thinking about Arvella, the siblings, and grandchildren.
What about Robby and his ministry? What makes me most angry, is the lack of honesty. Relationships are built on communication. If there is none, there will be a divorce and probably a nasty one. There may very well be a divorce between the congregation, the global viewers and members, and this wonderful church will no longer be! I feel betrayed, as I have donated a lot of money over the years, and I have crystal bricks and a stone in the Walk of Faith. All this was given in a very loving way because of the Christian message that millions of people were able to listen to. I wanted to be a small part of that ministry by donating money. Young Robert and Donna have come to mean a lot to me too, and it seemed the natural sequence for him to become the senior pastor. His preaching has gotten better and better. I enjoyed him every bit as much as Robt. Sr. So maybe the RCA didn’t like the mass baptism. You know it was a spontaneous moment, and it touched and probably “saved” a lot of people. I hate man made rules.
This would have been a good time to ask….What would Jesus do? You know He would not condemn baptism without going to a class first in the situation that occured for heaven’s sake. I too would like to know where Robt A and Donna went. I would like to communicate and give him my support, and perhaps start contributing to his new church if there is one. If somebody knows where he is, please post it.

The rift it seems has been kept pretty quiet. From what I have read what has taken place has not been revealed to us, the viewers. In one place, it was a rift about how things should grow & how. In another it was about the mass baptism spontaneously done. I would apreciate notifying viewers honest and complete details about this. It is sort of all the gossip that Obama is a muslim! Give us the Truth. For years Robert Jr was groomed by Robert Sr, years before he could be accepted as a successor for his father and now INSTANTLY Jr was removed from our viewing. We deserve an explanation that makes sense and is correct, not ones that evade the issues and such a decision.

As a Minister in Scotland, with a regular viewing of the Hour of Power, I have been shocked by the way in which this has been handled.
In these days the Church needs full disclosure and openess to the non-believing world – more especially perhaps for those who have given sacrificially!
Robert A’s ministry has been a special blessing to many here in Scotland.
Questions:
What support is he (Rober A) receiving?
What status does he hold at Crystal Cathedral? (I am told he is “Senior Pastor”)
Why so much “silence” from the one who emotionally gave him the role of Senior Pastor? (Robert H)
Oh I pray that God will grant His almighty blessing on one who has served faithfully the cause of Christ.

My whole family & quite a few friends would all settle in my living room on Sunday afternoons to listen to the Word of God as it was delivered by Robt. Jr. We liked it that it wasn’t the pablum his father dishes out. He spoke so eloquently & drove his points home, & we all knew that we were in the presence of the Holy Spirit, because his sermons touched us all. We are all sinners. We none of us will see God unless we confess our sins and accept Jesus as our Savior who washes us of our sins and makes us whole. We all know that the Sr. thinks he’ll go to heaven by his own power & wishful thinking. You can’t storm heaven’s gates with “positive thinking”. Only the blood of Jesus will get you there. Joel Osteen is another “feel good” preacher. Where are the alter calls? the baptisms? Where are the testimonies of folks who Know they’ve been saved?
I guess my family, friends & I will now watch Jentezen Franklin on Sunday afternoons and NOT the Hour. I feel sorry for the Sr. Schuller. He let satan in and needs intersessory prayers so that he can be redeemed.

You are all right in a way. This is a tragedy, a family and a church are in turnmoil and millions of dollars are at stake.
I do not believe the Schullers or the church would have removed Robert A. for no good reason. It is not about the seniors ego- but the juniors. How much money has Robert A spent on his world wide trips? Who has had any authority over him? I have met him and while I always thought his father was a bit arrogant- the son takes the cake.
The rules did not apply to him. Even his doctorate was from a pretty bogus university and unearned.
I am not a fan of family ministries. Too many daughters, son in laws, grand kids, inlaws, and shirt tail relatives work at the church and live the high life. Robert A as well. Limos, body guards, gated homes, and lavish life styles are not signs of faith- but of excess.
The church is millions in debt and is having a fire sale on it’s assets. Where did that money go? Most churches have transparent books and sets of checks and balances to keep good stewardship alive. Where is that at the CC? Even the majority of the church choir are paid singers…Show biz for God. Staff has been told to expect 20% pay cuts…so the little people will be stung. This will not be the first time for workers to be hurt at the CC. There should be a support group or 12 step program for them!
Jesus never had a huge temple, lots of possessions, or traveled first class. He still managed to change the world and to share a message that endures. You do not need a tv show, specialized books, statues or biographies- you do not need a family dynasty to serve God. All you need is faith and a willingness.

I found it inspirational and helpful during life’s dark moments. I was trying so hard to enjoy it after his son took over, but found I couldn’t listen anymore. I would try week after week and finally stopped contributing as I no longer felt it was a ministry I wished to support. Family seemed to share that view with me. I have been wondering where the son went suddenly and am disappointed that nothing was said (that I heard of, that is) but feel for Dr. Schuller who must feel deeply about what’s no doubt caused some rifts in his family. I thought he looked tired and a little worn lately. Sad to hear that news for both father and son, but must say I am not disappointed. I was sorry to see Pastor Robert A. Schuller leave yet I can understand his leaving as he often appeared uncomfortable with some of his sermons and talks, and at a loss for words with some guests. He was following in some very big shoes and that can be hard to do. I wish him well. I recall a comment he made once about being more comfortable in the smaller church where he served as a pastor before moving to The Hour of Power and I thought that because of his obvious discomfort at times he might he happier back with a smaller congregation. Sometimes we have to take giant steps in our lives to realize how much better off and happier we are with smaller steps. Giant steps and larger shoes are not for everyone.
I like the new format and the variety of ministers and speakers as they bring new dimensions to the Hour of Power that are enlightening, informative, educational, and positive in their messages. I wish only the best for everyone concerned in this effort.

Father is 83 years old and with no permanent pastor what happens when he dies? Does Junior come back? I would hope so because otherwise the entire ministry will fall. I’ve mainly watched The Hour of Power to hear the testimonies of others, not the overdramatic, “itching ears”, “Bible lite” preaching of Robert H. Schuller. Son Robert must now understand that his dad’s never ending “Pollyanna” Bible lite preaching, truly had no foundational substance in the character and mission of the true call of ministry. Ministers are sent by God to seek after the empty, the lost, and the hurting, and are called to bring them home to an abiding life in Christ; a life filled with peace, joy, and hope, first secured through genuine confession and repentance of sin. Too many preachers today are selling Christ’s Gospel message short because they seek personal prosperity and fame, preaching what the people want to hear: “You can prosper after you send me a seed offering on your credit card!” “God loves you just the way you are, and all your problems will go away if you think the right thoughts, and read all my books!” Consider the conversation that God will someday have with ministers who did not use their pulpits and large television audiences, to lead people to a genuine repentance of sin, a dependence on the blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sin through faith, and an understanding of Jesus Christ as Lord; submitting to the lordship and will of Christ in the daily walk of life. By His grace, may we all be faithful!!

Every Sunday before I left my home to serve my own church, I would watch this program and it would insire me. I loved Sr. and I bought many of his books. I was very excited when Jr. took over as it was All In The Family. Jr. was doing a great job and I continued to support the ministry. Ever since the split came and it was no longer a family affair I stopped watching and I now watch Dr. Price instead.
Jr. was a good choice to replace dad when he retired. Something beyond what we know took place.

Oh, how sad – what do we as Christians have to tell the world about working out problems that they might have with one another?? What could be so bad that a father and son could not exchange strong words behind closed doors and for the greater good of the Ministry – come out in unity committing to working together for all the persons who look up to them.
Is this Christian thing real?? I am sure the world is asking.

It is sad to hear (or read) about father-son disagreement. Everybody is commenting differently and I think people have the right to their opinions. But what makes me sad is to read that Schuller Snr. is a ‘phoney’. ‘Phoney’? My God, what is wrong with some people? I know that nobody can mock God (Gal. 6:7). If Dr. Schuller Snr. had been a phoney, do you think the ministry would have lasted 40 years? Please!!! I have been watching Hour of Power now since 1980 when my husband and I came to America for his Ph.D. (I am a Nigerian). I am 56 years young now and still enjoying the programme. By the special grace of God, I will continue to do so for as long as God gives me the grace. I am not apportioning any blame to anyone but I feel that the son would have at least respect the fact that his father founded the ministry and he would have respectfully discuss what to add or improve in the running of the ministry. Another thing disheartening is that Jnr. is the only son and my question is: Is it because he sees that he is the only son that he feels what he says concerning the ministry should be upheld? Also, who says it is only sons that can inherit ministries? And my friend, what had Joel Oesteen done to anyone? That is a son that respected his father and God will bless him. I only hope that his wife is as genuine as he is. I love his preaching – very relaxing. I have read many of his (Joel’s) father’s books and they are inspiring. Schuller Jnr. should find a was of making peace with his father. He should remember that he will reap what he sews from his children – sons or daughters. I think I have said enough. NANCY

Robert Schuller does not stand for the word of God. He has gone the way of the world. The Bible speaks strongly against homosexuality and God will damn those who mock His word, especially those who claim to be men of the cloth, for saying being gay and gay marriage are okay. Yes, God does love everybody but everybody won’t make it to heaven! Either stand with God or be prerpared to face your judgement! As for Schuller’s son, he isn’t any better than the dad. Both are teaching falsely. The Schuller and Osteens are part of the great falling away the Bible teaches. They are worldy not Godly.John Osteen was a great man of God. He would be sad to see what his son and wife have done to his ministry!

I miss Rev. Robert Schueller, Jr. preaching on the Crystal Cathederal! He really touched my heart! Too bad that Rev. Robert Scheller, Sr. could not step down and turn over the reigns to his son. I always enjoyed him too,but the son really hit the nail on the head with his biblical teaching! I cried and cried over all of the people he and Evil Kanival led to Christ one week! More programs with Robert Schuller, Jr. would have kept me watching, but I am not impressed with the daughter nor like to have so many pastors taking their turn. The show should have gone to the son, in my opinion.
