I got word this week that Focus on the Family will be ceasing publication of their teen magazines Brio, Brio and Beyond, and Breakaway. The last issues will be February 09.
A friend who works at one of the magazines told me that the Focus on the Family board approved a massive budget cut and the magazines were the victims. Focus is hoping that another ministry will pick up the magazines and keep them alive, either in print or online. But it'll probably be too late for employees, who are done in January.
I'm not surprised to hear they're folding. CCM Magazine ceased print publication earlier this year, and with the rising costs of printing and mailing, coupled with falling ad revenue and more online users, many print publications, from magazines to newspapers, are feeling the crunch. What is a shame is that Brio, Brio and Beyond, and Breakaway offered teens a high quality magazine with content relevent to a young Christian life. I don't know where they're going to find pop culture news, life stories and advice, and info about Christian music artists now. Tiger Beat? BOP? POPStar? TMZ.com?
From the comments I get when I post anything about the Jonas Brothers, I think they're already burning up those mags anyway.
UPDATE: Brio creator and editor Susie Shellenberger launches new magazine for girls.

I am an online reader of Brio. I am really sad that Brio and Brio and Beyond have been stopeed. I found them soo useful and helped in difficult situations. I do thank God though for all the blessing that these magazines have been to me and for the team that laboured in the Lord.
I know there are more important things to worry about with the country in a recession, but i hate it that Brio got shut down! This magazine was soo insiteful and it helped me with my relationship with God...i can't even put it into words. I'll miss it, but thanks for all y'all did (Brio) when it was up and running!
please don't stop Brio, its the only magazine my teenage daughter reads and values. she so looks forward to the articles and values the opinions from your writers.
don't let evil society win!!!
I know, I was so disappointed! BRIO is a huge encouragement to me, and you're right that there is nothing to turn to now.
I used to recieve Brio and Beyond. The magazine was wonderful! It helped me to put down the other trash and it gave me something very interesting to read! It truly is a shame that they had to stop printing them. I wonder if there could have possibly been another way for them to save money or another thing fot them to cut.
My generation is lacking much-needed godly advice and insight. It's sad that we are last on their list.(assuming so by their actions) I may be wrong about that, and I hope I am. But I see what culture and Godlessness is doing everyday in my school. I long for them to know Jesus loves them. There are other ways than through a magazine, and I know God has a plan in all this.
So I will trust Him. :) And I do hope, if Brio never gets printed again, that a great magazine like it comes along soon.
