I got a question from a reader today asking what I knew about the "Krystal Meyers sex scandal cover up". Uh, I don't know anything about any Krystal Meyers sex scandal. But since it's my job to cover Christian music, I said I'd check out the story.
I did some online googling and searching, and honestly, all I see are a lot of people copying the same posts that say there's a sex tape of her and Jeremy Shum and that Krystal's label covered up the alleged scandal and had the videos removed from the internet.
I'm still not clear who Jeremy Shum is. Some sites say he's a Christian VJ for Disney but his Wiki site says he's editor at Miley5.net, a celebrity gossip site. He's supposed to be a Christian, friends with the JoBros and wears a purity ring. That's if you believe everything you read on Wikipedia.
I see someone has offered up an image of an alleged Provident letter signed by VP of Business Affairs Scott Knight. Is it legit? Who knows, since ALL of the text blacked out and the phrase "Krystal Meyers and Jeremy Shum Sex Scandal" enlarged and overlaid on the letter. I think it's bogus.
All of the posts are without attribution to any source, legitimate or otherwise.
I also see another blog claiming an "official" response from Krystal Meyers denouncing the video, which appears to be someone claiming to have emailed her via MySpace and gotten the response. From what I know about Krytal Meyers, she probably did respond to the fan and it sounds like she talks. So that could be her response to a fan, but it's still not officially from her.
So here's my official stand on the topic: I've contacted her publicists for an official statement. Hopefully someone will get back to me on Monday. But until then, I'm not going to substantiate the internet rumors multiplying like wildfire.
From what I know about Krystal Meyers and the conversation we had on the phone a couple of months ago, I would be very surprised - VERY surprised - if she was involved in a recent scandal, sex or otherwise. We talked quite a bit about how in Japan, where she's a mainstream pop star, she's allowed to talk openly about her faith and she takes that responsibility seriously. (I'll have to dig that tape out and run the interview.)
But let's wait until Provident gets back to me. I promise, if I get an official response, it'll truly be official and from a reputable, on-the-record source.
Until then, I still stand by Krystal as a great Christian pop star with a solid testimony that young adults can relate to. Her new album, Make Some Noise, is great music.
If I hear anything else, I'll let you know.
UPDATE 11/10/08: Like I suspected, there's not a shred of truth to this rumor.

Thanks for doing the legwork on this. I'll be very curious to hear the official response from her publicist.
This is my concern:

In my opinion there has to be some truth to it, since if there wasn't, why would there be a letter with the letter head of Provident Music Group be floating around, as well as the names of the VP, and the whole of Krystal Meyers' management team? I searched for those names and they seem to be all legit, as well as David Maddox who is the lawyer for Provident Records.
I guess what I am trying to say is this is the nature of a "cover up". By asking the PR of Krystal Meyers, you are asking for a partisan perspective on the issue.
I still am curious to take a look at that video to find the truth behind it all...
Having said that I've heard Jeremy Shum on radio before and he sounds sort of like the sort of person who would do pranks and that sort of thing. But like with the Brooke Fraser sex scandal, Sony seems to be very use to sweeping the truth "under the rugs".
Sonic Milton, see my response to your comment on the other post:

I researched the facts, unlike the bloggers who passed along the gossip you're falling for. Before you respond to this, read my full response.
