Cactus Cuties “National Anthem” YouTube hit

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 1:18pm Tuesday December 9, 2008

I normally don’t pay attention to those “check this video out” chain emails, but for whatever reason I opened one from a friend with a video of some girls singing the National Anthem. (See video above.)Wow, I was blown away by the amazing harmonies and vocals! So I did a little digging and found a story in the The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal identifying the girls in the video as Baylee Barrett, 13; Blaire Elbert, 11; Andi Kitten, 11; Tatum Lowe, 11; and Madeline Powell, 8 – known collectively as the Cactus Cuties. The video was shot by Madeline’s grandpa, Ty Cooke, when the girls performed in February before a college basketball game. (Contrary to what the emails say, these girls aren’t sisters.)The Cactus Cuties list their line up now minus Lowe (not sure why) but the foursome have been getting a ton of attention, thanks to the YouTube video. They’ve appeared everywhere from major league baseball games to the Jerry Lewis Telethon to the 700 Club. The Cactus Cuties website is, of course, toally commercialized and the Lubbok news story mentions that the group is working with an LA producer on an indie project. We all know what happens when the music industry gets its hands on a pre-teen; you can kiss that innocent image goodbye and replace it with a big old dollar sign. You can learn more about the Cactus Cuties on their website.

Hey, I’ll vouch for you! Then I’ll come visit when Oprah arrives, but get those floors clean first. I can bring my air mattress and sleeping bag so no worries!
Loved this post.

I guess my question is – why are you so worried about what someone else weighs?
It’s great that you’ve kept off your 50-pound loss. But if I were Oprah I think I’d just want you to shut up. I’m willing to bet with her weight fluctuations over the years, she’s had about a million people tell her that if she just does what THEY tell her to do, she’ll lose weight.
Some people will just always struggle with their weight for a myriad of reasons. Why can’t we live and let live?

Hey Janice,
She’s hosting a series, “Best Life Week” beginning January 5th — maybe you’ll be called to appear! I hope so. If she does take you up on your offer to stay in New York, please share. I admire the two of you because of your public candidness about your weight.
Maybe we Christmas Dieters should petition Oprah to have you on. What a great way to end this program!

OK, did I miss something? How on earth did we go from talking about some preteen group to Oprah’s diet?
