Katy Perry: Clearing The Air On Her Faith, Her Parents And That Celibacy Vow

Monday January 26, 2009

I had a chance last week to take part in a teleconference with hot pop artist Katy Perry. Perry is preparing for her world tour and appearance on the Grammys in February. Katy Perry is a hot topic on the...

Rebecca St. James and Katy Perry are both rock singers with Christian backgrounds. Rebecca tells the public she'll be a virgin until her wedding night, and has years of success in the Christian music market, though she's largely unknown to the public at large. When Rebecca's songs get played, a couple thousand people hear them. Katy 'Hudson' Perry :) releases a Christian market CD, and few notice. Then she sings about kissing a girl and liking it, and she becomes famous worldwide, such that when her songs get played, millions hear them. You've got a whole generation of American youngsters who know and love every single word to Katy's song, "I Kissed A Girl." Parents throw their hands up in the air, saying, "What's wrong with today's world that this is what my kids are listening to and singing along to?" Yet their kids still know and love that song, while Rebecca St. James' take on sex gets minimal attention in today's world. Katy Perry, whether she's as Christian as Christians want her to be, or as far from the version of a Christian as Christians want her to be, has gone the very secular route of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and other recording artists, using sexually provocative lyrics to get the world all hot and bothered. Is Kathy 'Hudson' Perry a sell-out to the Christian music world? Most definitely, without a doubt. I doubt you'd have K-Love or Air 1 or Family Life Network playing "I Kissed A Girl." But does that mean Katy Perry isn't a Christian? How do we totally know what her relationship with God is? We don't. It will be interesting to see how her career goes, and how she develops as a recording artist. That song of hers gained her wealth, fame and influence, but did it please the Lord? God and time will tell.

"Sexually provocative lyrics"? Get a grip. "I kissed a girl and I liked it" is about as tame as it gets.

"It's not fair to hold Katy Perry up now as a fallen Christian, any more than it would have been fair, when she was 16, to hold her up as a Christian role model."

Well put, Joanne.

Why do I have the feeling that if the song had been called "I Kissed a BOY", concerned parents would have just shrugged it off and moved on? Cause girls are supposed to want to kiss boys, don't ya know?

Katy's parents love her to pieces and shake their heads all the time over her path. Her mom would NEVER say she was ashamed of her daughter to a reporter...way too classy a lady for THAT!

Yes, I know these folks and, yes, her parents are committed "word of faith" pastors who are both serious believers and the best friends and funniest, wittiest companions you could have as family members.

These people CANNOT be put into a standard "pastor" or "Christian parent" box--anymore than can most of us! Katy is a doll...and she is going to grow into both her talent and her faith in her own way.

Because kissing girls is okay, but Ur So Gay is bad.

Way to go Katy :P

I think Katy Perry is like many other strange pop artists, taking the word of God and using it when its convenient, like in their "thank you" speeches after they win an award. She is living in an anything goes kind of world, where you can do anything, believe anything, and its okay. But she'll find out one day that we all have to answer to God for our actions. She'll be on TBN in 10 years when her good looks have faded and no record label wants her.

She should have a chat with Rebecca St. James. LOL. Get saved Perry!

so I listen to KP all the time. I love her music she is witty and like the writer says she handles things in a tongue and cheek manner. I think that someone who reads their bible and believes in God would pray for her, not say and I quote "But she'll find out one day that we all have to answer to God for our actions. She'll be on TBN in 10 years when her good looks have faded and no record label wants her." Hello, if I weren't saved and I read that line, it would piss me off and I wouldn't want anything to do with the God you speak of if someone who supposedly serves him would bash me instead of pray for me. Mandy maybe you should read the bible a little more, try

Matthew 7: 1-6
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Mk. 4.24
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
6 ¶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

This message is not meant to offend but to promote the love that Jesus shared with everyone he met....especially the lost.

the only time jesus didn't show that same un-bashing love was towards the by the law pharisees who were judging instead of teaching and praying. May God bless all of you. And May he be with KP as she figures out her way.

Make no mistake....this girl CANNOT sing. My husband and I recently saw her live, and we were both surprised at the huge difference between her recorded voice and her live voice. Very disappointing. She may be a Christian, she may not be. I'm just saying she can't sing.

Very silly to try to determine whether or not she's a Christian. Are her sins worse than yours or mine? Probably not. But why does it even matter to you?

Fred

Is Katy Perry a christian? NO! Katy has turned her back on Jesus Christ and what she was taught as a child for the pleasures of sin. One cannot claim to be a christian and live fulfilling the lusts of the flesh as stated in Galatians 5 19-21. Are Christians perfect and do not sin? No Christians do sin but if we sin and do not feel Godly sorrow for our sin we are deceived and have a hardened conscience. We will all see when Katy returns to her faith again because it will be evident. She will renounce the life of sin she is living now and commit her life to correcting the wrongs she has done. She will tell young girls and young men that selling their lives out to Jesus Christ is the only way to true happiness and fulfillment. God is not mocked for whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap. If he sows to the flesh he will reap death but if he sows to the Spirit he will reap life. We should all pray for Katy and every young person at our churches that they will be all that God has called them to be.

I just want to say thank you for this coverage of Katy Perry - I was expecting more of a "you sinful whore" kind of approach. The people who feel the way the author of this article does generally stay silent, because of their more gentle views. On a human level, I would have thought I have nothing in common with Katy Perry, but it turns out I do. Her attitude towards Christianity seems to be pretty similar to my own, ie. brought up in the religion, don't buy it, but not going to be belligerent towards those who do believe. (Though I guess some people find my seemingly logical arguments blasphemous and offensive - can't help you there...)

It must be said that I do have "One of the Boys" as well as Lily Allen's albums - I'm not a closet homosexual, but rather a closet pop-listener. Guilty pleasure type thing.

Disclaimer: I am an atheist. Who knows what I'm doing on a Christian blog... hehe. My views may not represent those of other atheists, and I do not intend to speak for anyone but myself. I wish people would realise that you can't take the opinion of one member of a group to be that of the whole group.

ThatGuy - I have to admit that whenever I hear "I Kissed A Girl" the pop melody sticks in my head. Not a fan of the lyrics but it's definitely a catchy tune. And I saw the American Idol contestants sing "Hot and Cold" a couple of weeks ago and thought that was another catchy pop tune.

Sitting in on that phone conference, I definitely got a better sense of Katy Perry as a quirky girl who respects her parents, even though she's a rebel. I liked her quite a bit!

Katy's tunes ARE catchy, I agree with Joanne.
I'm surprised to find out that she's a Christian.

I just think that she'd like people to view her as a neutral person, not a Christian, not an atheist, not a gay.
After all, she's a maintream artist.
Yes she's supposed to promote a Christian life as a public figure, but it might end to society rejection.

But I think it'd be great if she's in Christ and also a celeb..

Joanne Brokaw
March 12, 2009 9:30 AM

Elizabeth, I don't think Katy would call herself a Christian. She was fairly neutral on the subject as it currently applies. She did say she had deep respect for her upbringing and her family, and you definitely get the sense that her spirituality is important but she's not committed to anything right now.

Fred.. People are turned away from Christianity most because of Christians. I myself am a Christian and when I read what you wrote (or HOW you wrote it I should say) I was like man, get off the judgment seat! All we know about this girl is what the media says and she says. God knows her heart, He knows if she believes in Jesus and that He died on the cross for our sins and rose again, and He knows what caused her to go from the Christian scene to secular. You have no place to say she has turned her back on Christ. What if she has just back slidden? I honestly think our job as Christians is to pray for her, not write comments about she has slipped or her stance with God. You are my brother in Christ so I definitely am not trying to attack you and believe we are on the same side but I am trying to tell you that your words will be interpreted differently by non believers. You may be trying to say what the Bible says, but if someone does not believe in the Bible it will just cause anger and make people defensive. Actions speak louder than words, we need to act out love rather than speak judgment.

I think katy is a Cristian she may be struggling but more and more i watch of her i realize that she is a Cristian. " I kissed a girl" is a very nice song i love it but the lyrics I'm not a fan of. But when interviewers ask her did she really kiss a girl? she never says no but then again she never says yes. But who knows she could of made " I kissed a girl" for money only.

I remember recording Katy at the church. She wasn't even a teenager yet. She was still learning how to play the guitar. I recognized an inward quality she had that was going to make her BIG. We helped her to have confidence in her ability by encouraging her to sing at any venues that presented themselves in the S.B. area. Her parents and I were able to make tapes and present them to different recording companies. She was even invited to sing on Christian television! What sets Katy appart more than anything else, is she has the "favor of God" in her life. Gifts of God are unconditional. His Love is unconditional. He (God) loves us period! No matter what Katy does she does have the "truth" in her heart. Once you have that, you are held accountable with that knowledge you have. I continue to pray!

Her own words in the song 'lost'..."Have you ever been so lost
Known the way and still so lost ...
My mother says I should come back home but
Can't find the way cause the way is gone....
we all falter and fall but we can always come back no matter what one has done.
I'm praying for you Katy!

I don't understand why the media MUST make Christianity seem so harsh and strict and forceful. When you honestly have had the Holy Ghost fill your spirit and move in your life, you WANT to live a life of holiness, and it's not like any of us are chained to the pew. I CHOOSE to be a Christian, and when I think of Heaven vs. "worldy fun" that lasts a minute, Heaven and God outways it COMPLETELY!!!!!!!!!!!

that is absolutely absurd. all of this is ridiculous. the Bible clearly states that homosexuality is wrong in romans 1. i dont care if she is just "experimenting" with it, its wrong. To call this person a normal Christian teen and tell people that they should look up to her as a "Christian" is straight up wrong. thats like telling people that they can do anything they want after they r saved. i know that God will forgive us for any sin we commit, but the point of being saved by Jesus Christ is to give our lives to Him. the Bible says that you will know a tree by its fruits just as u will know a person by their actions. looks me in the eye and tell me that Katy Perry's actions show that she is a Christian.

As every christian does have season where they fall away..its unfortunate that this is mainly what is broadcasted in the world.. Where are the real christians at that are worhsipping in spirit and in truth.. katy can make up what she wants to beleive but it doesnt change what the bible says about homosexuality being wrong it is WRONG!.. And just becuase she accepted christ and had chrisitan parents doesnt mean she wont be judged according to the truth she was taught and now makes secualr music whcih is contrary to what the bible teaches, her music does not glorify god.. Of course god can restore her. If she is willing, for sin is only pleasurable for a season.. she will return bak after she learns... God willing..How can I kissed a girl be a good or nice song? when it promotes experimenation of sexuality! and christians are so luke warm they will sit there and listen to it...compromising what they say they believe..

well i think she should have stayed to her roots and if she wanted to become a world re-known star she could have incorporated some christian music in her albums. or she could have at least not wrote a song called i kissed a girl. and im sure when she gets olderrrr she will realize whats right in the end.

ill be praying.

In my bible it is about Jesus yeah? Old testament about why jesus came, etc. New who he was and the whole thing as why it was all important. Yeah? Don't people get it that the book is a personal journey to help shape me as a person. What I the person should do. What we a christian community should expect in community with one another. But ultimatly what I should do. So Bearing this in mind. Katy is a young girl on a journey. A PAstors Kid trying to figure her belief to own it. Jesus loves me no matter what - Ref to King David. I want to be the person he designed me to be but I am a sinner. Jesus forgave my sin But I still do it. I aint perfect. It states clearly to sort our selves out before we "help" others sort out their stuff. If we do this maybe we will be less likely to "hate" the sinner for sinning. Love the sinner and see the sin for what is really is. LIFE! We all do it varying degrees but don't tell me that you are perfect hey?

Kelly
August 20, 2009 11:15 AM

Oh and what would happen if the most famous person in the world was to use that influence to help shape a lost generation.
I'm from Australia. From what I gather in america you could be a famous country artist and nobody in my country would know about you. Same goes for American Christian Artists We don't find out about you until you have released like 10 albums and some one sponsors you to come over cause you can't afford to hold concerts here.
But this girls on a spiritual journey - joins a mainstream recording company - sings at countless Music awards around the globe.
I know about her. I am looking at this website. Why cause she mentioned she released a christian single ages ago.
The only single I have found on Youtube is about faith and the words are so powerful about being tested - well if she released a Christian album I don't know how tested she would've been. Songs aren't just poetry this is powerful stuff. What she sings is a declaration. Well all I can say is that we should be praying hard for this girl. Thanking God that she is in a position of influence. That he will use her and through her countless lives will change.

"and now makes secualr music whcih is contrary to what the bible teaches"

I am a Christian, I go to church every week, I am part of the worship leadership and youth leadership, in a church of over 5000 people in Mexico City. I've been on the staff of Acquire the Fire, even peaching at the ATF conventions, I write worship songs... and I do listen to secular music, I have even written secular songs.

Can someone tell me where on the Bible can I find the words "secular music"? God sees the heart. When touring with ATF, I got to meet a lot of "Christian bands", with the worst attitudes and the worst testimonies of life. Also I've had the chance to hang out with the such criticized "crossover artists" like Lifehouse, POD, and other "non totally christian bands" and I have been blessed by talking to them and to see a genuine love for Christ without being talking only about God with their music, so.... stop judging Katy, no one of us know what is in the deep of his heart. Remember Christianity is not a religion, is a personal relationship with God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

P.S., I've kissed a girl, and I like it

Dear Everyone:
I agree we shouldn't judge Katy Perry, because of her music or crossover into "secular" music. But thing is, Let me help you what the bible says about being a Christian. A Christian is one who is suppose to "act" like Jesus, and obey him, and practices his teachings. One who sings "I kiss a girl and I like it" or "Ur so Gay" Did Jesus do that? Uhhhh..No! Did Jesus promote homosexuality, uhhh no, was Jesus a Gay Activist...uhhh No, and Did Jesus believe in Celibacy...Uhhhhhh YES! Thing is, you can call yourself a Christian, but what's inside your heart. I bet Katy Perry was once a follower of Christ, but now she's in the "far country" and please don't call her a Christian, because she gives us all a bad name! I'm not trying to judge her, but don't make excuses for her, and say that she's a Christian, because truth is she's doing everything against God and the Bible....READ IT...it's good stuff!

Okay well I’m in a Christian school, and we are talking about things like this in our Bible class right now. Katy Perry is a fallen Christian. We can’t deny it .We can’t walk the fence with out culture and God. Maybe Katy wasn’t ready for faith when she made her Christian album, but there is one thing for sure. Her music definitely does not support a Christian world view or message and we should not be supporting it. It doesn’t matter if she was a Christian at one time. She definitely is one artist that, with her current music we should be staying away from. What goes into our minds penetrates our life ALL the time. What we hear and see becomes what we do and who we are. As a Christian, what would we have to say about Katy? Would we have to say that she’s gone now, but we should welcome her with open arms if she does return to Christianity? I think so. Jake Blake is right with what he said. We are called to act like Jesus, and Jesus definitely would NOT be advocating homosexuality.

Jade

Katy Perry is not a fallen Christian. And it's terrible for anyone to call her out on anything they themselves don't understand. Yes, Katy grew up in a Christian home, and was surrounded by it her whole childhood. However, she never molded to it or conformed to what she didn't understand, but stood somewhat in the boundaries that every parent sets for their child. She herself never explored or experienced what it was all about, and most children don't. You sit in that church because your parents make you. How could anyone have fallen if they've never been lifted up? We all have the curiosity and the right to be able to find it for ourselves, and not be held up to the standards our parents set out for us. And it is especially no ones job to put her down in that aspect.

Joanne Brokaw

>>herself never explored or experienced what it was all about,

Jade, that's an interesting comment, and kind of where I was going with the original post I did. Since Katy Perry released a Christian album, a very good one, with great music and very thought-provoking lyrics, I wonder if we shouldn't expect our Christian artists to have explored and experienced what Christ is all about? I never intended to point a finger at Katy Perry. I was more questioning Christian music.
