More on American Idol contestant Danny Gokey and wife Sophia

Thursday January 15, 2009

I know it's still early in the competition, but last night's auditions in Kansas City showcased Danny Gokey, a singer from Milwaukee who lost his wife just four weeks before that audition. The show's producers milked that story, didn't they?...

I sort of agree with you and here is why.....btw i found you from http://www.fansofdanny.com/ ..... I thought it was a touching story; made me cry a little. But then after watching the next two cities, i have to say that seems to be a theme for the season...more sap then in the past years.....am i wrong? I LOVED danny I thought and still think (after watching the next two cities) that he really has no competition other than Jamar his BFF.

Any-who those are my thoughts. What say you? :)

Hi, Roman! Thanks for letting me know that site has a link to that post. I appreciate it!

So far on Idol, I'm bored silly. There are some great singers, but the goofball contestants are getting old. I'm not a fan of the new judge. I say ... wake me up when we get to Hollywood, LOL.

I'm just glad that I was able to share Danny's story and the info about his foundation. It took some digging around, but if he makes it through I'm sure Idol will promote it even more.

All the best!

Danny Gokey, besides being a great singer is a wonderful guy. There is nothing phoney about the man. Sophia, his wife, was as excited as he was about his being called in for the Idol audition. There is no way he would have ever let her down. They knew her time was limited, and they made the most of every day, every minute. Every thing that needed to be said, was said. There faith in God allowed them the strength to be prepared for the inevitible, with no regrets. Did you notice his face went blank when Simon called him up(after the group sing)?..He was afraid that his best bud Jamar didn't make it. Thats the kind of guy Danny is.

Danny and Jamar we two of the top males they have this year and can't believe that Jamar was cut and others less talented than he made it through. I am very glad that Danny made it but feel that they both should still be in the competition. This show continues to baffle me at some of the decisions the judges make, ie: some females making it during auditions based more on their looks than their talents and then you have Jamar who is extremely talented and he doesn't make it, how dissapointing.

Just had to vent a little, not sure how much longer I will keep watching but I hope Danny makes it all the way not only for him but also for his BFF Jamar.

Tiffany, I'm with you. Total shocker! I think a final two with Danny and Jamar could have been possible.

I was in SHOCK when Jamar was not chosen! I'm also with Tiffany, they chose much less talented people over him. I just don't get it. Danny and Jamar are my absolute favorites and I'm so disappointed they will not be competing together. Did you see Danny's face when Jamar gave him the news? You can see what a genuine, nice guy he is. He'll get my votes that's for sure. I too am from Milwaukee and would love to see Danny in his hometown parade in the end. I am a faithful watcher of Idol and see in Danny what I saw with Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood, something special right off the bat. I love him and hope he wins! What a great guy.

Back here in Malaysia, we have Vince Chong to look up to.
He was a worship leader in one of the biggest Charismatic churches in Malaysia. He joined a singing reality show Season 1(Akademi Fantasia)...won it and BAM!
He was phenomenal!
Why phenomenal?
People had already knew him even before he joined the competition.
He was actively involved in youth ministries around Peninsular Malaysia.
It's not easy for christian to win this kind of competition here.
We'll he miraculously did.
But after that, it was quite hard for him to commit to church and his ministry.
That's our biggest concern.
Our priority changes based on what we choose to in life.

I knew that Danny is going to make it til the end from the very first time i saw him.
Bless you Dan.
When he sang 'I hope you dance' struck my heart for a few secs.
He nailed it!
There's something in him that....i don't know....different.
It's not his story but it's him.
So....genuine...pure

Jamar didn't get thru....i guess the judges had their own reasons why. That's why Kara said "You're not going to make it this year"....
the word "this year" tells me that they had to cut him off.
They even asked him whether he is coming back next year.

What if he was not cut off and made it thru? I think their friends and family would have troubles choosing and voting.
What if they became the final two?
Wouldn't it be trouble?
It'll be fun to see though but hurting at the same time.

We can get the premonition there already rite?
Both Dan and Jamar are undeniably superb.
I guess it's for their own good (both Dan and Jamar).
Better off like this.

Oh well...we always have Dan =D
The world is watching you America.
Dan is the new phenomena now.
A great testimony.
I'm rooting for Danny =D.
I can't vote coz I'm in Malaysia.
I shall vote thru my prayers.
God Bless You Dan =D.
Cheers to you and your late wife Sophie =D.

I didn't really watch all contestants sing tonight it started off pretty (borring)I was actually waiting to see/hear Danny, of course they had to leave "The Best For Last. Some of them shouldn't have made it through, some are so dramatic. But I must say this, at least they have the courage to give it there all "in some cases". My favorite since he auditioned has been and will be to the end ***Danny Gokey*** . Yes I voted for him (of course)I kinda think he resembles,"Robert Downey Jr." don't cha think ? I hope to get to meet him in person before he hits it BIG.........GO DANNY !!!! Hugz , xoxoxoxox

Joanne Brokaw
February 18, 2009 9:21 AM

Mezmorise, it's probably good that he went last, because then he was right in the voters minds when the phones opened. I was surprised by how many singers who sounded good in those short sound bites really stunk when they had to sing for a whole minute and 20 seconds. Nerves got the best of a couple of them but yeesh.

You're right, Danny Gokey does look a little like Robert Downey Jr!

So what girl do you think is going through tonight?

Danny is a great singer, has a great life story, is blessed with his walk with Christ and yes, looking like Robert Downey Jr isn't all bad.
I am a song writer (favorite Genre is Christian), I write contemporary like Crowder, Jeremy Camp, Leeland etc. I would love to see Danny after "Idle" go into Christian music it has got to be one of the fastest growing Genre's out there today!
God bless, Shaun

I think that Danny is the best one on that show. I loved the song "hero" by Mariah Carey he did an awesome job and he deserves to stay, I am so glad that he is in the top 12. I think that Ms. Del Toro is plain annoying and I’m glad that she’s gone so I don’t have to hear her annoying laugh or voice again.

I loved Danny Goke from day one, and although I do feel very sad for him because of his tragedy I really believe he has the potential to win. It's unfair and ludicrous that people are saying he got sympathy votes. If Tatiana del Toro had been chosen over him I probably would have stopped watching the show. I have never seen a more annoying, presumptuous person(and I really can't understand exactly why she thinks so highly of herself). Between the laugh and the hair flipping I was truly just tired of her. America made the right choice hands down.

Joanne Brokaw
February 21, 2009 5:04 PM

I don't think he got sympathy votes. He's very talented. In fact, I'm glad that this year we have so many talented singers. It's going to be a good competition.

I just think that his story roused sympathy so people are interested, and of course Idol exploited it so people would keep watching. But Danny said in one of the shows that he wants to draw attention to his wife's foundation, and that's surely happening.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more of him.

Maybe it is me , But I feel Danny Gokey could pass for Robert Downey Jr. and that is meant as a compliment Danny! Danny you shine so bright above all the others, and I am voting for you all the way! I know that it is too early right now in the competition , but I have to say it anyways--I think he will be the next American Idol in 2009 this season! Tatianna Del Toro needs to get over herself! and stop being such a drama queen, honestly! You really are not as great as you think you are!

I absolutely screamed in pleasure when Tatianna did not go through. She was the most ungracious person in the entire show. I had to push the mute button each time she spoke, she was SO annoying! Good riddance; Hollywood does not need another Brittany Spears. About Danny, he is awesome. His voice is unique. I can honestly say I would listen to a 12 track CD of his over and over. His story is tragic and I feel for him, but I do not see him for his tragedy. I see him for the wonderful voice he has. No matter what happens, he is my next American Idol.

March 6, 2009 8:55 AM

No matter what else happened, I'm thrilled that we no longer have to be subjected to Tatiana's theatrics. The sudden "accent" and then the groveling at the judges table-what a drama queen! She needs to get over herself. I think the girl has some serious issues, if not some sort of actual emotional or personality disorder. I can enjoy the show now that she is finally gone.

He is such a huge inspiration to me
To be able to do all this after the whole thing with his wife is amazing
If my husband had just dies I would be heartbroken and would NEVER have thought about doing something so big
I am very into my church and helping it grow and help get others so interested in Jesus which just makes Danny even more of an inspiration.
I think its wonderful what he is doing for his wife
I hope he gets really far in this competition and I really hope he wins.

But seeing you go though it with such class and poise gives much inspiration to the rest of us! A friend of mine told me this one time and thought I'd share it... "You won't get over it, but you wil get though it". Danny manym many of us are out here voting and praying for you. Just hold on- 'cause the best is yet to come!

I'm wondering why Simon has been making disparaging comments about Danny lately? Danny did a cute little dance with the back up singers
Tue. and Simon called it clumsy. (I thought this was Am Idol, not dancing with the stars)He hasn't had the camera time the last two weeks either. Maybe they are pushing Adam, the 'anything goes guy'. I still feel Danny's vocals are the best, and he's the best too. But we can't let Danny down. Be sure to make your calls to vote for Danny. He is truly a nice guy. And about Tatiana, I saw a little longer clip (than what is usually shown) and he did turn to her and give her a hug, but he was trying to concentrate on what Ryan was saying at that moment. On Idol you can make as many calls as you want to, not like Dancing with the Stars, where only 10 votes are allowed. Danny, stick with the things that are foremost in your heart. Your love of God, and your thankfulness for time you had with Sophia.

Danny Gokey is my American Idol. He just HAS to win Idol, he's the best!! Danny is the whole package & living proof that amongst the failing econonomy, mass shootings & violence in America today.....there IS still some good left in this world! Danny is an extremely talented artist, and a handsome (very handsome) man with an AMAZING voice that sends chills up my spine, but what I love about him most, is what's on the inside..... his heart! Whether or not Danny wins this competition is up to America now & whomever they choose to vote for, but Danny will always be my personal idol no matter what the rest of America decides!!!!!! This world needs more "Danny Gokey's", and if everyone else spends the time that I have to get to know him & everything he stands for..... he would win, hands down!!
You have my vote Danny....100x over!!! God bless!

Danny lost me at the VT. Not because it was so manipulative but because it treated the idea of someone auditioning for a TV show four weeks after the death of his wife as something perfectly normal and that was supposed to make the person concerned seem like a really nice guy. We all grieve in different ways but auditioning for a TV show is a strange one. It wouldn't even occur to me in a state of grief.

Don't get me wrong. Had I subsequently thought that he was excellent in any way, I may have been a little won over eventually but though his tuning is a little above average, that is all it is. Added to which he has the performance skills of a grizzly and the voice of Michael Bolton on a diet of caustic soda. I don't have a problem with gravelly voices or any sort of character or nuance in a voice but I can't be doing with strained vocals and that is what Danny's are, even at his best. The shallow part of me may even have been won over had he looked pleasant but he doesn't. I don't mean that he is ugly, though he is never going to give Johnny Depp a problem, but that he has a slightly shifty look to him. That is beside the point though as I don't know the guy and it could just be the way he looks.

There is an unendearing look of entitlement to him at all times, during the judges' critiques when they are positive (there is a look of "I'll get you outside" about him when they are not), during the results, etc.

I'm a believer but my problem with Danny in that respect is that the church he belongs to is known to be less than pleasant and yet that is being swept under the carpet. Not that I am suggesting there are any nasty doings on Danny's part but the implications of having someone with those connections in the contest should NOT be ignored in the way that they are being.

My main and most relevant issue, however, is that I don't see him as anything more than average. There have been contestants in Danny's style in all the previous series and many far better than him but they have not got beyond the top 5, 6, 7. If Danny was to win simply because of the misplaced sympathy vote and the misinformed views of legitimate believers where others like him but far better have failed, it would be a bit of a joke.

Caroline

Sorry, I thought the show was American Idol, not American Sob Story. I thought it was about discovering the best unsigned talent in the country, not the most manipulative person in the country. I thought it was about discovering someone with the talent to represent the US across the world, not someone who is going to be an embarrassment to the country and to the show.

Danny Gokey, American Idol? Don't make me laugh.

Danny is an amazing guy, I know him personally and he is nothing but an awesome friend. He is strong, and I am so happy to see him MOVING forward after Sophie's passing. I have seen him cry (he still does once in a while) but he has chosen to snap out of depression and be successful at what he does best. SING. whether you like him or not doesnt change the fact of who he ism and who Sophia is to him. I lvoe you Danny, and support you 100% my brother.

Danny's the best!
April 7, 2009 6:18 PM

It is so funny to me that for someone that Hates Danny(somebody they don't even know) so much, you actually take the time to write so many horrible things about him. Seriously, YOU MAKE ME LAUGH! Who said that pursuing a dream was leaving aside grieve? Nobody here knows this guy. Nobody here knows what he has been through or what he feels. It is obvious the nobody here has lost somebody they love, but so you know, going after the dreams you had planned as a couple for the future, after your wife or husband has die, is exactly what grieve is about and is the only thing that will always keep you close to that person that is gone. If nobody here has anything good to say to him don't even enter the page. At least have a little respect for his wife.
Oh and Danny if you ever read this, I wish you the best of luck!
God bless you. You are an amazing singer so don't let anybody tell you otherwise, specially not people that don't even know you.

I am absolutely stunned by some of the horrible things that certain people have stated about Danny. I am very proud of Danny for striving to do what he wants to do. It shows that he is motivated, because rather than sitting at home and being depressed all the time - he goes and tries to accomplish his life goal. Danny, you are a wonderful person with such a big heart, and I wish I knew more people like you! Good luck, and you are my favorite no matter what.

From where I am sitting the best word to describe Danny is courageous. To loose the one closest to you and to love them enough to continue to live, to continue to chase dreams and carry on is a clear sign that Danny loved his wife very much. Who among us would be at peace if knew that our life partner would crumble and dissolve into an empty shell of loneliness if we passed away. I am sure that she is in heaven looking down and is so proud of him. I also think that his determination for pressing on is a huge testimony of Danny's understanding that this life is not the end and that he will be reunited with his wife someday in heaven. As far as talent, he is my favorite for no other reason other than, THE MAN CAN SING. God speed to you Danny, you are the BEST!!!!

Danny deserves to go all the way, if not at least in the final three. If he doesn't win, I really hope he goes on to publish and sell Albums. He's an amazing singer.
I agree that not everyone tastes are the same. I, personally, don't like Lil Rounds so I'll understand when people say they simply 'don't like Danny's voice.'
However, it's tasteless to bring up his story to argue wether you think Danny should win or not. The judges don't care what you've been through, and I know plenty of people who are not voting for Danny, 'Just Because His Wife Died.' No, bullshit. If that's what people want to say, it could be just as easy for me to say 'Lil is still here 'because her house got destroyed by the Tornado.'
I'm not saying nobody is doing pity votes, because you do have the (Few) people that do that. But do you really think he's still here because of pity votes? I'm sorry, but there aren't enough people who are doing this with pity votes.
What a lot of ignorant people fail to realize is this; The first few weeks, the public doesn't even vote for the people they want on idol. That's all the Judges. As stated before, the Judges don't give a crap what you've been through. If you sing good, then congratulations, you've got what it takes to sing on idol.
Danny is amazing, and I love him and his voice. I don't like other people, and you don't see me wasting my time commenting on them, do you?
His tragedy is painfully sad, however he wouldn't be here if he couldn't sing. If people are truly that ignorant, you're the one who'll be laughed at.

Since the 3rd Idol season, I made a rule NOT to look at the singers or listen to their life stories "if" my husband can mute the tv fast enough! Even if he's slow, I only hear the judges ask them to tell them something about themselves, but that's all. Because it is true for (me) that if a guy is really, really hot, or a girl is just a bit too over the top pretty, example "Bikini Girl" I'll love the guy & diss the girl, and it does kinda ruin the TRUE vote for me, I can't help myself! So, back turned to the t.v. just listening to their voices...I picked "Danny" from the first night! You know the Try-out's. His voice is amazing! I could pick him out every time he would sing, I would ask my husband "That's my guy isn't it?" I don't even think I knew his name yet, but I could tell his voice...until a couple of weeks ago a girl at work said "Who do you want to win Idol?" I replied "Danny"...! I love him! She said "Oh the one who's wife died..." I was like what?! But but then it was too late to be swayed because I already picked him, but I was like OMG that's so very sad. Now he's in the finals, and I'm so proud of him. And sure enough, now that I've seen Adam, I was like, His too cute, he's a rocker, they're going to love him! And they do. So I don't, man am I shallow or what! Anyway point being, Danny is so good even blind-folded, and no life stories, He's The Man!

Danny, it is sooo good to see someone that works for Gods kingdom in the finalist. Our Pastor has always said, whatever you do. Do it with the best of your ability because you are a representation of God. And I know in my heart that you do that. Just keep in mind and in your prayers how God has blessed you and stay true to him. Because there is no telling what he will do for you and how he may use you with the talent he has given you. My son-in-law and I have picked you in the top 3. May God Bless you. From Hope Mills, North Carolina.

Danny,

OMG where do I start?? I have picked you from the beginning. I have made my Dad a 59 year old Idol addict!!! I really think that you should go all the way. Your voice is so amazing and the fact that you're so stinking cute doesn't hurt either.. I can't wait to see you wrinkle your nose up every week when you look into the audience. I have so much respect for you that you can get up there and do this every week when I know that your heart is reeling during some of these performances...I am usually at work when Idol is on and my father records it for me and usually teases me telling me that I probably don't really want to watch (insinuating that you were voted off.) I know that you and Adam are going to give each other a run for the money in the final two...but I cannot wait to buy your first CD. I am a mother of two who is in the process of a divorce and looking forward to you watching you sing every week brings a little sunshine to my life.

GO GO GOKEY!!!!!!!
Also seeing you drive the Ford Flex in the video was so funny because I had been driving by the lot about once a week wishing that I could afford one and then there you are driving one around!!!
Crazy huh???

Anyway good luck, I know that you have a great life and career ahead of you...

Everyone has there own opinion on what is good music, that's what makes the world so interesting! I, personally, get goosebumps when I hear Danny sing. I loved him from the very start...he carries with him a wonderful spirit that touches me and many others! I am worried that people (teenagers mostly) are getting all caught up in the "theater geek" Adam...he would be wonderful on Broadway but this is a singing competition and all the facial expressions, tongue sticking out, the hair, the clothes, the black nail polish and screaming doesn't do it for me, he sounds like a woman. I was truly touched when I first heard Danny's story about the loss of his wife just weeks before the auditon for American Idol. I believe she is an "angel" watching over him through this difficult competition. I have watched American Idol since season 2 when Ruebon Studdard won against Clay Aiken. This is the best season by a mile. There are some very talented singers this year. Matt, Lil Rounds and Danny are my absolute favorites. I pray they all find success. I can't wait till Season 9. I just wish I could afford to attend an American Idol concernt, but perhaps next year. I pray Danny, my favorite wins. You are in my thoughts and prayers Danny, thank God your faith is what is carrying you through. I can't wait till your first of many CD's comes out, I will be first in line in New Jersey to buy it. I wish you well. God Bless you and your family.

Danny, I was watching this week's show and it occurred to me why you may not always show that connection to the audience that the judges are looking for. I wonder if it is because your pain and grief is still so raw that it might be hard to completely let down your wall, try as you might. My baby died last year so I know a bit about grief and watching you this week I felt like I physically could see the wall you are putting up. Perhaps it's to help you keep your sanity. Please know that the grief will never go away but it will soften a bit over time. Best of luck and my prayers are with you.

Hi Danny
I have been inspired by your talent and desire to perform well. I have been voting for you since the start. However, I was discouraged when I saw the video clip of you throwing the cake at Allison. Danny, You know that Christianity is not popular in Hollywood. Because you possess such a positive attitude and a love for God, I believe this show was rigged. There is no way that you did not make the finals. It became a story of Christianity versus the gay world in the tabloids and online. I hope that is not the case. I cried when you were voted off, as Kris should have gone and Allison should have been there with the other two of you. I wish you had won, not only for you, but for your cause and your wife. Kellie, don't forget that 6 of the top 13 contestants this season were Christian artists. Kris Allen is a worship leader at his church in Conway, and is a strong Christian. I promise, Danny wasn't voted off because of his faith. He was voted off because not enough people voted for him. :)

And honestly, it's probably better for him. When his contract is up, he can go make whatever kind of record he wants to make, fans will still love him, he'll be the next Clay Aiken, a huge success even though he didn't win.

You really are so beautiful in and out. I can see the sweetness and gentleness of the Lord with every emotion you show. Your voice reflects your deep spirituality...it is so heavenly. Yo Danny, To say that I was devastated about your premature departure from American Idol doesn't begin to put into words how I really feel...I just sobbed after the results on Tuesday evening. It took the prayers of my 12 year old daughter to restore my peace and confidence. She prayed for God to help you and told Him that she knew He had something much better for you! When I heard those words, I was able to compose myself and remember that God is in control and He knew the results before this season of Idol ever began. He knows the plans He has for you and they are better than great...they're awesome! As for your singing....You are the "Bomb". There has never been anyone on Idol that can begin to sing with the heart and soul that you have! Speaking of your soul and character...The light of Christ shines so brilliantly thru you that people of faith are instantaneously drawn to you. I was drawn to you from the beginning. It's really amazing that when we're God's children we have a supernatural discernment that draws us to other Christians. I was drawn to you way before I knew your story or knew of your extraordinary faith! So, keep your spirits high Danny. While you have been busy experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime adventure on Idol, God has been busy laying the foundation for your future. I know you have been through a lot. My prayer for you is Joel 2:25 "Then I will make up to you for the years the swarming locust has eaten." My your years be golden and may our sweet Lord make up to you for the pain and heartbreak you endured with the loss of your beautiful wife. God's speed!

Hi Danny,

Just keep in mind, their are people that won Idol and that is how you know them. You were on Idol for a reason, I pray you got your answer from God, that yes he loves you and has a plan just for you. Idol is the venue God used to expose you, now it time for you to show the world....you fill in the blanks.

I wish you the very best that this life can offer. Yes Chris deserved to win American's Idol. You are much deeper than that. Nothing derogatory against Chris, but remember the world ask for Barabus instead of Jesus, but look who saved them.

I would be watching American Idol and my husband would be in the other room and when you were comming on i just said your first name and he and his best friend would put their game down and come in my bedroom and listen and watch you they both thought it was a rip off that you were voted off. wow how about Lyonal Ritchie how wonderful that was. I just watched your face as you were singing with him and you looked so proud to be up there with him. you are wonderful Danny. I am looking forward to getting your CD ad all of your songs to listen to you. you are wonderful again i say that. i am sorry We Love you Danny, God Bless you and your family,,. xoxoxoxoxoxox

>>>>but remember the world ask for Barabus instead of Jesus, but look who saved them.

Irish, that's a very strange comment to make, LOL. You know Kris Allen is a worship leadr, too, right? Actively involved in the campus ministries at the college he attends? I would HARDLY equate Kris Allen with Barabas any more than I'd liken Danny Gokey to Jesus.

Today you were awesome. The smiles you put on those childrens faces was priceless, so many of them have rare moments of being free of pain but when you sang and visited them in their rooms, there pain was forgotten for those moments. You truly are blessed with a gift of kindness, warmth and above all talent. God has put you here today in this place of your life for all the right reasons. Hopefully you will come back to visit us at the Childrens Hospital and continue to be a SPECIAL PERSON. GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!

Danny, You were hands down better than Kris. So, why he is the American Idol is beyond me. Anyways you have a big following and will sure to be successful beyond your dreams.

Danny, You are simply the best!! You have a sweet and kind face with an outstanding vocal. I loved every song you sang, especially the "Hero" and "What Hurts the Most". I listen to your version with your austonish voice all the time. Days when I'm down or tired, my 2 beautiful children (10&12) will play the song on You Tube and run to my arms to cheer me up. Please include them in your CD. I can't wait to purchase it. Bestest luck to you in the upcoming tour.

I love your songs and your voice is amazing! You should have been the American Idol, but Kris was my third favorite (Allison being my second), so as disapointed as I was, I was still glad one of my favorites won. Never stop singing, God gave you an amazing gift!
