The newsboys announced this week that former guitarist Jody Davis is returhing to the band after a five-year hiatus. Davis will replace Paul Colman, who has played with the band for the last three years.
Davis, who was a member of the band from 1993-2003, contributed to many of newsboys’ greatest hits like “Shine,” “Entertaining Angels,” and “It is You.” In 2003, he took time off to care for his daughter, Bethany, who has cerebral palsy. In a press release, Davis says, “I am thrilled to be returning to the band and back with my bandmates, who are some of my best friends. This is a big change in my life, and I’m looking forward to the tour and new record with excitement.”
Colman will continue to purse his solo career. In the press release, he says, “My three years with newsboys were among the best of my life. I learned an immeasurable amount about music, ministry, and life, and am happy to say I left with all our friendships wonderfully intact. I always was and always will be one of newsboys’ biggest fans. I am very excited about the return of Jody Davis!”
The newsboys are getting ready for the May release of their new project, In The Hands Of God. The title track from the album will be released to radio January 16, and the band will also embark on a 30-city “Join the Tribe” tour with special guests DecembeRadio, Vota, and Bread of Stone in February.

Yay, This is one of those cases where I liked Colman’s solo stuff and will be glad to see him getting back to it and I liked the Newsboys better with Davis. Now if only Phil Joel comes back. It’s just not a real band without a bass player.

I honestly don’t think this is a good move for the Newsboys, Paul brought something special to the band that was very lacking especially since Phil left. A happy personality on stage. Frankenstein and Furler write everything on the records anyway so it really doesn’t matter who plays guitar. Jody is very dull in presence and really has never added anything to the shows. And on another note:
Whats with all the weird opening acts?!! i understand the Inpop thing i really do, but tour with someone note worthy. Not several small bands trying to eak their way in. There will be like 1% of the audience who will care, the others will just suffer through it until Newsboys hit the stage. Their cheers will be ones of relief I assure you.

We’ve got Jody back. Now all we need is Phil and life will be good again. (I miss you, Phil!)

That comment about Jody Davis joining and Paul leaving was extremely RUDE. I hope whoever wrote it is not a Christian because that kind of talk makes us look bad!!! I think it is UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME THAT JODY IS REJOINING. I agree that he did not have the same stage presence as Paul Colman, but he is an amazing guitarist and vocalist, and I’m sure knows how to be a Newsboy if no one else does. The band was not the same when he left to take care of his sick baby girl, and its great that he’s returning.

Me siento feliz de poder leer esta tan agradable noticia yo he perdido dos hijos y me identifico mucho con Jody no solo por eso sino porque como el tambien toco guitarra con una banda y su fe y su carisma me anima para seguir con mi ministerio

Glenn…
The reason for taking small unknown acts is to help them break into the industry / ministry.
It’s called “Giving Back”
That was how Newsboys got their start, and they remember who they really are.

Mark 42 – don’t forget, though, that when a band goes on the road with a major act they pay for it. Pay for play. Sometimes it can be like $1,000 a show. For a small band, it can mean a lot of exposure, but it costs them. One of those things that most music fans don’t know about the Christian music industry.
Yes, major acts like the Newsboys definitely take artists under their wings – Todd Agnew is a great example of that. He not only takes them on the road, he mentors them like a pastor/teacher/discipler.

Whatever happened to the truth? Jody Davis has been carving briar smoking pipes, and mastering the craft very well, too.
