Shirock Readies To Release “Everything Burns”

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 10:34am Tuesday February 10, 2009

I was turned on today to a new band – well, new to me, anyway – that I think you’ll like: Shirock. The band grew from a friendship between Chuck Shirock and Pap, who met in 1999 and discovered that they had both spent time living overseas with missionary parents. Chuck grew up in the Philippines and Scotland before his family returned to the States, while Pennsylvania-born Pap’s Greek family settled in Ohio after a year spent in TurkeyThe two played in college – she providing keyboards and backing vocals for his early demos – and in 2005 they were joined by drummer Adam Gatchel and bassist Derek Blank. In 2006, after being in various other bands, guitarist Jason Bynum joined the four.Five songs from the band’s new CD have been available since 2008, and have been featured on television shows, including MTV’s “The Hills” and NBC’s “ER.” They’re included in the band’s new release, Everything Burns.“The songs on the album — they’re our lives, our relationships, our friendships within the band. They’re our pursuit of trying to figure out life, who we are, who God is, and how it all makes sense,” says band founder and frontman Chuck Shirock. “It’s all of that put to music.” The title track sums up the band’s mission statement, says Chuck. “It’s this idea that our time is so valuable and limited…we want to use is wisely. So much around us is temporary. We want to live for the things that really matter…like relationships, pouring time and resources into people, and really making a difference. Everything else just burns.” You can check out Shirock on their MySpace page. Get the Gospel Soundcheck headlines delivered daily to your email inbox.
