American Idol: Danny Gokey Goes Home; Kris Allen and Adam Lambert Final Two

Thursday May 14, 2009

In case you were living under a rock last night, Danny Gokey was sent home during the results show on American Idol.

I've been predicting that Kris would be in the final two; I figured it would be Adam joining him, until Simon asked voters to vote for Adam on Tuesday night. Often, those judge's comments can backfire, so until yesterday afternoon I thought there was a chance for a Danny/Adam showdown.

Don't get me wrong; up until a couple of weeks ago I thought Danny would win this season. But the last few weeks I've seen Kris grow by leaps and bounds as an artist, so by the end of April I had a sneaking suspicion that Danny might be in trouble.

Not that leaving Idol is a bad thing. He's still going to tour through the summer with the other 9 finalists, and believe me, there are labels waiting to sign him. My guess is the Christian market is waiting to scoop him up.

And let's not forget what a great inspiration he's been to millions of viewers. In the video above, you can see that despite the joy of his Idol experience, the grief over his wife's death is still fresh, 10 months later. God is working through him, and we haven't heard the last of Danny Gokey.

Bert, no offense intended, but I think you're a bit of a nut-case. Adam is no carnival sideshow, he's immensely talented, and by far the best contestant Idol has ever had. You and I may share the same world-view ( maybe that assumption is incorrect), but musically, we are worlds apart. I've been in the music business for 30+ years, and Adam Lambert is the most exciting thing to come along in ages. Give the guy a second look--check out his youtube stuff (Brigadoon, Is Anybody Listening?, and the studio version of If I Can't Have You, for starters.) God-given talent.

Cheryl, I think the thing with Adam is that his style of music doesn't appeal to everyone. Paula hit it on the nose when she compared him to Mick Jagger or Steven Tyler. Adam is talented, but personally, I'm not an Aerosmith or Stones fan. I can recognize talent, but I don't have to like the music, if that makes sense. But I can see why people who like that kind of music are all about him!

Way to go Joanne!I love the entertainment side of Adam and I am....old. I, along with many others are going to lean toward the good 'ol country Kris that can sing anything. Adam proved with his version of "Ring of Fire", he doesn't DO country. Not that I didn't like or enjoy him, nor do I think he couldn't do justice to country, but this final choice boils down to ROCK or Easy Listening.
We'll find out next week onnnnnn American Idol!!!
(love you joanne)

Hi! I'm a working mother and a devout Christian, too. I recognize that American Idol is a singing talent contest open to all -- Christian or not, black or white, female, male and otherwise. It is not supposed to be a popularity contest for a certain class of persons. Among all of Season 8's contenders, Adam Lambert is clearly the artist and the best singer, gifted with a powerful voice. America's vote for Kris Allen, or its vote against Adam, seems to be a vengeful hate vote against that portion of America that Adam stands for. ADAM LAMBERT DESERVED TO WIN. Even Kris Allen himself knows this in his Christian heart: that is why, as soon as he was unexpectedly handed the undeserved crown, he openly admitted in public that "Adam deserves this..." -- instinctively repudiating ridiculous vote results that were surely no act of God and faithfully adhering to the glaring truth. Adam Lambert is the true winner!

Listen, the people who voted for Kris instead of Adam didn't do it for any other reason than they like Kris' music better. The same way you don't like Kris' music is the same way they don't like Adam's music. The difference is that almost everyone I've talked to who preferred Kris also gave kudos to Adam for his talent, while the Adam supporters were less generous.

Adam doesn't "stand" for anything as an Idol contestant other than his talent in the genre of music he sings, any more than Kris "stands" for anything other than his music. It's a singing competition, not a pulpit.
