Downhere’s Marc Martel Sings Nessun Dorma

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 7:39am Tuesday June 16, 2009

Whenever I think of Marc Martel, co-lead vocalist for Downhere (another of my favorite bands) I think Freddie Mercury or Kevin Max. Marc’s got this wildly cool and unusual voice, much like both of those singers..But as you can see in the video above, he’s a student of many styles of music, and his latest interest is opera. This video shows Marc explaining how he learned to sing, and then performing an operatic aria, Nessun Dorma. I always knew Marc was talented, but this just confirms it.You can learn more about Downhere on the band’s website.Click here to subscribe to Gospel Soundcheck by email and have the Gospel Soundcheck headlines delivered daily to your email inbox. Why is he wasting his time with pop-rock??? He should be singing opera full time — he could be the next Pavarotti for God’s sake! He’s got an astounding voice for opera. If I see him at Kingdom Bound, I am going to insist he sings opera more than pop-rock– he’s just too darn good not to!!!

Marc is a great singer. God has given him wonderful talent; and he ought to use it for the Lord. This was a beautiful song (I am talking about the tune. I have no idea what the words are saying)and Marc did a great job; but I have to say as a general rule that opera was the soap opera of the times soap; and for the most part- I can’t say all of it – is nothing short of debauchery. I wouldn’t think it was something that we would want to glory in and promote.

You should be able to find that on the band’s website. He’s from Canada, I think BC. Lives in Nashville, is not married that I know of. You can definitely email the band – they’ll be able to give you any info you need. They are super, super nice.
