MercyMe Releases Updated Statement About Accident

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 10:13am Wednesday August 12, 2009

I told you earlier this week that Christian band MercyMe had been involved in an accident that took the lives of two passengers in the car that hit their tour bus, as well as the live the driver’s unborn baby.
The band released another statement today and asked for us to share it with readers:

MercyMe would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support and prayers that have been said not only for them, but for the families affected by this tragic accident. We have been in continued communication with the chaplaincy program at the Ft. Wayne Police Department, and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with everyone affected by this situation.

Every night on stage when we introduce our song, “Bring the Rain”, we talk about God being in control. If we believe what we say, then we must continue to look at how He will get the glory through this, and bring healing to so many.

We resumed our touring schedule in Milwaukee Monday evening. Before beginning the concert Bart addressed the crowd for all of us, expressing our heartbreak for the families in Ft. Wayne and our desire to pray for the families and for the young lady who still remains hospitalized. The crowd joined us in prayer specifically praying for healing, comfort, peace and understanding. We thank all of you for continuing to pray.

Bart, Mike, Jim, Nathan, Barry & Robby
MercyMe

Please continue to keep the driver in your prayers, as well as the families of the victims, and the band as they continue to minister to people through this tragedy.

I am very sad to see that a christian band will not even contact the families that were horribly affected by the accident in Fort Wayne, IN. The only thing they have done is post blogs on various websites and kept in touch with the FWPD. One of my co-workers is comforting her daughter who happened to be a friend of Barbara’s who was killed in the accident. Please be informed that Kari passed away yesterday as well. She was the young mother who lost her fetus. It was an accident I agree however, blogging is not helping these families cope at all. A call would be the gracious thing to do. I too will pray for everyone’s strength during this very trying time.

Please do not assume something you do not know for sure. Mercy Me is not obligated to tell us the details of their contact with the families. Furthermore, it would be entirely out of their character and all they stand for if they were not contacting the family.

Having recently been a close friend to a family that suffered a tragic loss of their 18 year old son I know first and foremost the computer through facebook has been a tremendous blessing to them. But for these families involved if everyone would focus their attention on the families who have lost loved ones and only reflect positive comments then they would not have to time to be blogging anything that could be destructive. Please never assume you can begin to understand what people go through when they loose a child. But always know that God did not cause this but He will use this to His glory. May God comfort these families in their time of need.

I was not saying anything bad about the band at all. I just felt that it would be very gracious of them to contact the families. I lost a child in an accident and it helped me tremendously hearing from the other party involved in the accident. So I was not assuming anything. It was just that, an accident. I do not blame the band at all for the accident. And no, the band is not obligated to tell others about their contact with the families at all. I just know firsthand that they have not contacted them because of my co-workers daughter who was very good friends with Barbara. She has been with the family since Sunday. I am sure they (MercyMe)will do what their hearts tell them to and not to rely soley on their PR person. Their faith will guide them. None of you has a right to be so hateful towards me. I will still continue to pray for everyone’s strength. God bless all of you

Dawn, we don’t know what’s happened with the band, who they’ve talked to, who they haven’t talked to, who they are planning to talk to. Yes, they were not hurt in the accident, but I promise you that they are not taking the tragedy lightly. These are godly men who are loving, compassionate and kind, and who are struggling themselves to deal with what happened, knowing that three people and an unborn baby were killed in an accident that involved them, even if they weren’t at fault (which I can only guess from news reports).
So let’s not judge anyone or assign meaning to other’s actions or lack of actions. This is a very tragic situation. Let’s pray for the families and let God lead everyone.
