Gospel artist Calvin Hunt passes away

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 9:42am Saturday January 2, 2010

calvinhunt.jpgGospel artist Calvin Hunt passed away on December 26, 2009 at the hospital in Queens, NY.
The 52-year-old Hunt was member and soloist of the famed Christ Tabernacle Choir and Brooklyn Tabernacle Singers. His latest Vine Records’ release, Bridges, earned two 2008 Dove Award nominations for Contemporary Gospel Recording and Contemporary Gospel Song, “Come On.”
Hunt’s life was a story of overcoming obstacles and tragedy.
One bio explains, “One of eight children, Calvin knew the struggle of growing up as the child of an alcoholic single mother. To ease financial burdens at home, 12-year-old Calvin found work at an Italian pizzeria in his hometown of Queens, New York, and became a trusted employee for the next seven years.”
He went on to form his own band, but when the group disbanded he succumbed to drug abuse. Eventually, with the support of his church, wife, Miriam and their two children, he overcame a crack addiction and went on to full-time ministry.
In 2005, his oldest daughter Monique was murdered by her ex-boyfriend – in front of her three young sons.
Most recently, Hunt has been battling cancer.
Through it all, he continued his ministry, traveling the country to encourage people to look at life and know that God is the author of life.
Condolences and/or gifts to the family can be made to Calvin Hunt Ministries and sent to Christ Tabernacle, 6434 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, NY 11358 attn: Calvin Hunt Ministries.

The inspiration Calvin Hunt gave me in the lyrics of his songs helped me to go before God and forgive myself for sins I had committed in the past. His song “What Sin?” is the most encouraging song I have ever heard supporting God’s promise of forgiveness. I am grateful for the anointing God gave him in his ministry and I ask a blessing on his family for comfort. I only met him through his music and though the angels in heaven I’m sure are rejoicing at the contribution he is making in their worship, we will still be worshiping Our Lord through the songs he left behind. I never got the chance to say “thank you Calvin – for the impact you have made on my life” or “thank you to his family, for being there for him, to hekp him though it all”…..so…thank you and bless you. I am and always have been blessed through Calvin’s music.I transferred it all to my Ipod a few years ago so I can sing along and worship the Lord as I walk each day. I play his CDs in my car as I travel about. His music has truly touched me and I thank the Lord for his impact in my life. I am saddened by his passing and had looked forward to being blessed by another collection of music in the future. His touch reached far and wide (Ontario,Canada) by the grace of God and I personally look forward to meeting him someday! Peace, comfort and blessing to his family and all those who knew and loved him.

Daughter of Artist Calvin Hunt (Mia Hunt) is waiting for her chance to produce music that would also bring much Glory to God as dad did. She knows he would smile from Heaven. She sings ,writes all she currently has. She sang with dad on many stages. From age 2 1/2 years old she sang at Brooklyn Tabernacle backed by that famous anointed choir of the and before 2-3000 people. The song Happy Birthday Jesus that was recorded by the grand daughter of Pastor Cymbala. She looks forward to carrying the legacy , mantle..dad artist Calvin hunt to be followed by her now Air Force C-1 brother Calvin E Hunt. For God’ Glory

I used to watch Calvin Hunt perform as a young girl and words cannot express the impact his testimony had on my belief in God. Seeing how God touched Calvin’s life powered and strengthened my own belief and faith that God could save my own father. Calvin’s life was truly a blessing to everyone he came in contact with.
