“Tough Times don’t build character, they reveal it.“

Today I was speaking with a good friend, Ed Lavin who lives in Far Rockaway, NY.

Hearing his situation was very moving.  Ed lost his mother last month.  Now, given the devastation of the storm he is fortunate, as his apartment was not flooded or damaged by Hurricane Sandy, but Ed is still without power since last Monday.  Meanwhile, his dad, who lives in Howard Beach can’t say the same.  His home had five feet of water in the basement.  Windows were shattered as water came pouring in, flooding and damaging their home.  He  is also without power.  They are doing everything they can to save their home.  Ed’s Dad lost his wife and life partner and now faces losing his home.

The water is going down but without electricity to run a pump and repair the damage things are very challenging.  Ed has organized family, friends and any people available to help save their home and help his father clean up the mess.  Forget about having the basic comforts of a home, heat, hot water, a home cooked meal and a place to rest your head.  They are trying to survive and need help.  Ed and his team are working whenever they can to help his dad.

Anyone in the area who can lend a hand to help with the clean up and repair of their home is needed.  If you have anything you can donate, like clean sheets, blankets, clothes, food, etc., Ed and his father need your help.  This is the time when people make all the difference in the world.

Hurricane Sandy was devastating, but people helping other people are even more powerful and incredible.  Nothing can replace the human heart and a helping hand.  This is the time when true heroes step up.  They are not in the newspapers, or on TV, they are doing what it takes, helping other people and making a difference.
