My mom sent me a link to a wonderful article by Anne Roiphe for grandparents.com, called Grandmothers Should Be Seen and Not Heard. It’s written for grandmothers, but it actually was a wonderful read for me. I wish I didn’t agree with almost everything she said, but I do. My mom is a superb bubbe, and I know that she thinks I’m a wonderful mom, but I still can’t handle her criticisms, or even her suggestions (even the good ones), very gracefully. The comments on the article are all from grandparents – I’d love to hear what some moms think about it.
Of course, I too need to be reminded to shut up from time to time. Here’s a great poem to that effect (sort of) that I read on the bullseye, baby blog. Warning: contains the f word a few times. Thanks, Jena!

Having an empty nest and not yet a grandmother, I feel I can be somewhat objective about this, and I too agree with pretty much everything the article says.

Thanks for the link – it was a great article! What I loved about it was the tone, how “real” and kind it was. I have to say I don’t completely agree though – I like hearing advice. Sometimes I need perspective, and other times I’d rather just talk about the difference in assumptions rather than have them be an elephant in the room. That’s not to say that I’m never upset by grandparently wisdom, though.

I stumbled on your blog while doing research for a sermon about Jewish parenting. The article by Anne Roiphe (one of my favorites) recommended by your dear mother, Judy, (one of my absolute favorites!) spoke to me loud and clear about my own struggle to find the right balance with my son, his wife, and my granddaughter. I hope that you are well, and have enjoyed your books so much.
