It seems that Britney Spears is still following in the spiritual footsteps of her mentor Madonna. Having been introduced to Kabbalah by the Material Mom, the former Baptist was soon seen wearing a red string around her wrist and toting a 900-year-old copy of the Zohar, gifted to her by Mrs. Ritchie. Now it seems that Britney is taking another page out of Madonna’s spiritual play book by taking her four-month-old son Sean to a Hindu Temple in Malibu to be blessed. Britney even emerged from the temple sporting a bindi, the traditional red dot Hindu women wear on their foreheads. (For those of you not in the know, or who have better things to do with your time, Madonna dabbled with Hinduism around the time she made her “Ray of Light” album, dressing a la Shiva at the 1998 MTV Video Awards.)
It seems that Britney must be reading more than just fairytales to little Sean, seeing as just a few years ago she wasn’t quite sure what Hinduism was. Speaking to Newsweek about South Asian musical influences on her 2003 release “In the Zone,” Spears said that she had “been into a lot of Indian spiritual religions.” Asked if one of the religions was Hinduism, she answered, “What’s that? Is it like Kabbalah?”

Mrs spear seem to me just follower and she need to just be herself. Madonna change faith as she change her underwear. I hope mrs spear did not go that way, but it look like it.>

Celebrity religious fads like this drive me crazy – stars jumping on a spiritual bandwagon, throwing themselves wholeheartedly into it for a couple of months, and then abandoning it like a fashion trend that’s just so last season. These are religions that have been alive for thousands of years, and people have spent entire lifetimes studying and following them. Celebrities’ cavalier attitudes don’t trivialize the religions any (unless, I suppose, you’re someone who takes what Britney Spears says to heart), but the faith-jumping trend certainly highlights the shallowness of some stars’ beliefs and attitudes. Then again, for all I know, perhaps I’m being too harsh and judgmental. Certainly it’s easy to see Britney as a careless spiritual trend-surfer, but I think we could also be charitable and see an unformed young woman searching for spiritual guidance and enlightenment and following in the footsteps of people she respects and looks up to. In that case, perhaps it would be interesting to develop some kind of psychological or anthropological theory about why celebrities like Britney seem so much more inclined to faith-jumping than many people, and why they have this habit of immersing themselves almost fanatically into a faith for a little while, then abandoning it entirely. Thoughts, anyone?>

Hinduism is a noble, non violent religion. I hope she sticks with Hinduism.>

Why am I not surprised that Britney has virtually zero conception of Hinduism, even while she applies someoutward manifestations of it?>

It seems that Britney devotes the same amount of thought and maturity to choosing her faith as she has to choosing her husbands.>

Screw ppl like her and Madonna (I’m sorry – Ester). They are nothing more than spiritual DABBLERS who know very little of these religions. They are like so many ppl I know personally that call themselves of a certain religion but actually don’t PRACTICE it. :b I know of Kaballah, I am not into mysticism, even tho I respect those who respect and honestly practice it. I know three people who either practice it or of Hindu upbringing but don’t practice it anymore and don’t call themselves Hindu. And I happen to have been Buddhist for a while now, I am quiet about it and don’t often meditate, but I still adhere to its principles and don’t flaunt it.>

Celebrities always seem to be looking for permanence, even as they live lives that are ephemeral. Always changing roles, changing songs, changing cities, they seem to be looking for something that is just over the horizon. Perhaps that’s why they change spouses so frequently. On the other hand, young people tend to do this, also. They just don’t get the same publicity about it.>

You know what? At first, I was ready to make all sorts of negative, cynical comments like the rest. You know, where I denounce the way in which celebrities treat religions. However, I take a look at Britney and her baby in the temple, getting blessed, and I can’t help but feel embarrassed at my own cynicism. Britney is a mother and she wants the best for her child, and she is looking to Hinduism (and possibly other religions) to do something that all parents want for the kids: blessings in this new life. Gosh–why can’t we just be happy and see the honest, caring, sensitive, fragile and loving mother inside of her that wants the best for her son?–just like any other mother.>

Yea, i agree with the idea that we should for once judge ourselves and think about what sorts of pathetic lives we lead to the extent that we dont have a second to pray because we’re all so “busy”, at least shes taking time out of HER actually busy life to give her son some sort of spiritual mindset, although i am full blood sikh, i am very proud of her for choosing another amazing religion like hinduism, and so what if she didnt know what it was then, you cant expect people to know about all religions, so what, shes only human. its pretty sad that everyones so out to jump at her for something shes doing on her own time, like i think my advice to everyone out here making stupid comments? its simple: GET A LIFE, let the woman do what she wants, who are YOU to judge her in the first place? i dont see you becoming a multi millionaire entertainer :S yea thats what i thought. save the criticism for someone who actually cares, rather than sitting on your sorry a$$ all day long posting dumb-a$$ comments, go out and DO SOMETHING and help the world, find a cure for cancer, but dont criticize people you dont know, and probably never will…. try focusing on your own mistakes for once. “before you try to change people, change yourself”. latz>
