Colbert gets Catholic on “The Report”

posted by donna freitas | 12:00pm Wednesday July 26, 2006

Most fans of “The Colbert Report” know by now that its hilariously truthy host Stephen Colbert moonlights as a good Catholic family man. Last night his Catholic leanings were put to the test by his guest, William Donohue, president of the Catholic League, who made quite an impression.

My curiosity was piqued when Colbert announced the name and affiliation of last night’s guest at the beginning of his show. I wanted to see how the Catholic Colbert would fare sparring with an arch Catholic conservative such as Donohue, known for his media savvy and controversial public statements. Though the Catholic League’s mission is to further “Catholic civil rights” and fighting anti-Catholicism in America, somehow that often translates to a lot of efforts against gay-rights initiatives such as same-sex marriage. And last night, Donohue’s rhetoric didn’t disappoint, as he went on and on about how the one thing that unites conservative Catholics, evangelical Christians, and Orthodox Jews is the evil, secular left. His commentary was sure to offend just about any group that might be watching, aside from religious conservatives like himself (including liberal women and Jews, gays, and people who are not in support of Bush right now). I searched for the clip on YouTube but so far, no one has posted it (though you can see Donohue go on about the “Jews and Hollywood” if you wish).

The biggest question I was left with following the show: What exactly did Mr. Colbert think of this fellow Catholic? He was rather silent last night and not nearly as hard-hitting with his guest as one might expect. Was he simply overwhelmed by Donohue’s sharply stated views or was he somehow agreeing with what Donohue stands for? I certainly hope not. Listening to Donohue reminded me of the perennial question I am always asking myself: Whether there’s any place for someone like me in a Church with powerful men who offend me like Donohue does. Public figures like Colbert generally give me hope that indeed there is room. But after last night, a girl has to wonder.

Here’s links to the videos of the William Donohue interview on “The Colbert Report”, courtesy of Comedy Central’s Motherload: WILLIAM DONOHUE, PART I: http://www.comedycentral.com/motherload/index.jhtml?ml_video=72150 WILLIAM DONOHUE, PART II http://www.comedycentral.com/motherload/index.jhtml?ml_video=72153 I’m glad you published this commentary on the Donohue video. As a Catholic, I too wondered what to make of Colbert’s interview. Was he kidding? Why didn’t he press harder? Was he trying to give Donohue enough rope to hang himself, or was he hoping to get real answers from a man who could do nothing but spew rhetoric?>

Of course there’s room for you! I’m a youngish (30s) woman with an advanced degree who went back to the Church in her adulthood. For every blowhard such as Donahue (whom not every conservative Catholic likes and does not represent the faith) there’s a John Paul II (a saint in our time), Benedict XVI, Fr. Benedict Groeschel and other “powerful” men (and women) who open up and explain the faith.>

The word that came to my mind during the interview was “Pompous”. His constant reinforcement of the “ruler” and its obvious reference to the abuses inflicted in “catholic” schools showed a decided lack of good judgement. I’m glad I am not Catholic… never really liked the Babylonian connections in this faith anyway. BE LOVE!>

I really don’t know much about this Donohue fellow, but from what I see, he is spot-on. I’m not a Catholic, but I can tell you some things that many of you will likely take offense to: 1) Jesus is Lord. 2) Jesus died for our sins so that we could spend eternity with God in Heaven IF WE SO CHOOSE. 3) Jesus did not tolerate hypocrites. 4) Jesus dined and fraternized with whores, tax collectors, sinners and even murderers. HE LOVED THEM: NOT THEIR SINS. 5) ALL OF US ARE SINNERS and deserve to go to hell. It is ONLY by the GRACE of God we are saved. 6) This country (USA) was founded by Christians on Christian values. 7) Our founding fathers knew that our rights were given by God, not man. It says so in the preamble to our Constitution. 8) Our founding fathers believed that the fear of God would naturally cause “moral restraint” in Americans. 9) The lack of “moral restraint” and the pushing of left-wing radical agendas undermines the foundation of this country and WILL cause this country to fall. 10) Satan exists. 11) Satan’s biggest and best tool to destroy faith and steal souls is called “evolution”. Don’t confuse “Macro Evolution” (satan’s fantasy and what I speak about here) with “Micro Evolution” (an observable scientific fact). 12) Evolution is a lie; a fairy tale that will ultimately be the undoing of America. 13) All the supposed “facts” to support evolution have been based on imagination; NOT SCIENCE. In fact, it is MUCH easier to prove a young Earth with science than to prove evolution with science. 14) The “Big Bang” is a joke; Google search for “conservation of angular momentum” and then try to explain why some planets, moons and whole galaxies spin backward. 15) Evolution is a religion and as such, should be BANNED from scools. It takes more faith to believe that all life arose from non-life, than to believe we were created. NEITHER Creation NOR Evolution is testable OR observable. BOTH require faith. BOTH are religion. 16) Study your history. You’ll find that rape, murder, pornography, unwed birthrates, divorce, abortion, drug use, homosexuality, racism, bigotry and just about any other hate-crime and/or plague to our society SKYROCKETED in the 60′s when the American people allowed evolution into our schools. 17) Teaching evolution as fact only taught children that we are animals, no different than any other animal on the planet. Why not act like one? 18) Removing God from our schools only taught that there is no “right” or “wrong”. How can there be if we came from a rock? If evolution is true, then you are your own God, not responsible to anyone but yourself. 19) Those of you who are moderate Christians and believe that abortion, homosexuality, racism and bigotry are in any part OK; you are mistaken. 20) We exist because God CREATED us. 21) We are not animals, because God CREATED us in HIS image. 22) Whether you like it or not, you belong to God. He made you. He paid for you. He owns you. He will judge you one day. 23) God loves you. 24) God hates sin. 25) We are called to love everyone. The first two Commandments are quite clear on this. 26) I love you, no matter who you are or what you’ve done. I have been commanded by my God to do so. 27) If you are a murderer, rapist, adulterer, homosexual, bigot, racist, pornographer, drug user or any other type of sinner, I still love you and I will pray for you in the hope that you will learn to hate your sins as I do. 28) “Moral responsibility” is a good thing. 29) I am intolerant of my children being taught lies; being taught that abortion is OK, being taught that homosexuality is OK, being taught that marital infidelity is OK, being taught that to speak out aginst things that violate their faith is “hate-speech” or “bigotry”. Why is the reverse not true? Why is it not “hate-speech” when people bash my faith? 30) For those of you who want to bash this post, God loves you and so do I. I am NOT intolerant of you, your lifestyle, your religion or your beliefs. I will simply agree to disagree with those who do not share my views. 31) I saved this one for last, because this is what makes people the maddest! I’ve read the last chapter: GOD WINS; SIN LOSES!!>

Either Colbert was flabbergasted at interviewing someone more right-wing than his own persona, or just wanted to let him hang himself. By the way, FredFlinstone, I can’t tell you how appropriate your name is to your message, even though you would be the first to say there were no such things as “cavemen”!>
