Has all of the couch jumping and Suri speculation finally caught up with Tom Cruise? In a surprise announcement yesterday in the Wall Street Journal, Viacom exec Sumner Redstone claimed that Paramount–Viacom’s movie arm–is terminating its 14-year business relationship with Cruise’s film development company.
Seems Redstone believes mega pics like “Mission Impossible III” would have done much better at the box office if Cruise hadn’t scolded Matt Lauer for being glib about Scientology or chastised Brooke Shields for taking pills for her post-partum depression. “As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal,” Redstone has been widely quoted as saying. “His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount.”
Hollywood–not to mention the media–is all-too eager to lap up this party line. But as in all juicy Hollywood break-ups, there are two sides to the story. Cruise’s partner, Paula Wagner claims that negotiations to renew a development deal between Cruise and Paramount had stalled in recent weeks anyway, so Cruise has decided to solicit funding to head up his own independent film production company. Wagner claims Cruise has made more money for Paramount than any other movie star, and that Redstone’s comments are unprofessional and unnecessary.
We’ve all had fun watching Cruise spin out-of-control for a long time now, but I am not convinced that Paramount’s unceremonious dumping of Cruise is motivated by religion as much as it is by greed. With Cruise commanding an exorbitant salary of $20 million and other incentives per film, plus a reported $10 million a year overhead, Cruise’s Scientology craziness gave Paramount the easy “out” they needed to cut costs. The move comes on the heels of a New York Times report that major movie studios are increasingly concerned about slumping box office and “have waged war on actor salaries.”
On the other hand, Cruise might want to give Mel Gibson a call. I am sure there would be a lot for them to talk about as they are standing in the unemployment line.

Tom Cruise’ behaviour has become increasingly unacceptable. He is entitled to his opinion but this does not give him license to be rude to other people. I find him to be cocky and not such a great actor. I think it’s time he rode off into the sunset.>

I’ve always thought of Tom as a mediocre actor at best. All of his characters seem like clones of one another. And I hate his big, goofy smile. And his laugh ug! It makes my skin crawl. I ve been boycotting his movies for years, so I can t say I m sad to hear this news. As it is he doesn t need to work another day in his life to live like a flippin king. As his paycheck got bigger, so did his ego. Bye bye, Tom.>

Just to spite him I hope that Paramount hires Brooke Shields for their next big blockbuster and gives her a bigger contract than Tom ever had!>

Yeah, Mishakal, and have Brooke play a Scientologist who goes off the deep end in some War Of The Worlds type flick.
That would be GREAT!!! LOL!!!>

I think Tom Cruise ia a great actor! I think it is excellent that he truly practices what he preaches! However I think trying to make other folks such has Brook and Matt feel shameful for their actions and beliefs is dead wrong! As far as Paramount dropping him, I feel that’s only because Paramount feels the crunch, when movies do as well as they expected, and it is their opportunity to drop a “big star” such as Tom and blame their reasons for his actions!! Besides you tell me what other Famous Actors and Actreses act as responsible individuals at all times!!!! Just wanted to voice my opinion of this situation!!>

Hey Lisa: You call sleeping around with your kids in tow, responsible? I find Tom Cruise a publicity hound among other things. He just walked out on his wife and began dating another woman, after her, he moved on to someone even younger, knocked her up in no time flat, forced her to join Scientology and hasn’t even given her the respect of marrying her! Practice what he preaches? He’s a LOON of the highest magnitude. Having said that though, I do like some of his films, but he’s not my favoritie actor by a longshot. He can’t compete with Anthony Hopkins, DeNiro or Jack Nicholson. He’s just a short guy with crooked teeth and a big nose. LOL….bye bye Tommie boy.>

I’m not sure about scientology church.I know Tom Cruise is in it.I don’t know if that is church Mel Gibson is in. But To me the only God is GOD Jehovah,Our Saviour’s Jesus’ Father. Any one, stars or not should be kind to others! Not insult them. Perhaps Brook shields pill taking, was a concern to Tom. And Tom was just trying to tell her with God, you don’t need pills of that kind.God can heal you, you do not have to take those. Perhaps He just got to carried away with trying to tell her with rudeness coming after him, from those who took it as an insult. I was not there so I do not know exactly if this was the way it happenned. PEOPLE have a bad thing about streching and deleting facts about what there gossipping is about. All I know is my GOD says DO unto OTHERS as you would like to have done to YOU. I Do love both these actors acting abilities myself. Both are nice looking men. Though Tom lost to much weight I think. Mel Is still Just Hot. Mel Gibson NO doubt to me was lead by God to DO “Passion Of Christ”. Look how many wanted him not to do that film. But He accomplished it with whom HE calls GOD’s Help. AND I believe HE was Blessed for doing the film. The former movie industry lost out on the future money Tom and Mel brings in. Not smart move when money is what your in business for. But if it was personal stuff, like they were of another faith, or they did not like the lifestyle they seen from the actors, or other stuff, was why they fired them, fine.Just like stock market, got too know when to cut what my be up coming losses! If “War of the Worlds” got Tom out of it. Then Tom Remaked this movie.”War of the Worlds came out in the 50′s. I loved the movie then. AND TOM CRUISE did a excellent acting job,and updating job on the movie in my opinion! MEl’s Passion for Christ,in “Passion of Christ’s” Production, Outstanding! And your faulting Tom and Mel. Is doing the same thing HE did too Brooke about the pill’s. Insulting! But you have added Gossip, and rumors with it. So is any one any better than the other. Sin is sin in MY GOD’s Eyes(Father,Son(Jesus)and the Holy Spirit. I think Tom Cruise was a great actor and he got caught up in all the Hollywood glamor. We all are human and make mistakes but he gets paid big bucks to be an actor and should be wise enough to know when he should keep his mouth shut!!!He is like a little boy who has never grown up and wants all his play toys at what ever the cost may be.Tom is missing out on life because he does not know the true meaning of Love,Joy,InnerPeace that only comes from Jesus Christ our Savior.I can see beyoung that huge grin and what he doesn’t say.He is very talented as an actor and being arrogant is not the way to go.When your head swells to big God has a way to bring you back to earth.Only thru adversities do we gain wisdom and knowledge, and I am sure one day Tom will wake up and realize life isn’t just all about him.It is ashame that with all of his energy and resources he acts so foolish. He needs to be more humble, even temper, and a pair of steel shoes to keep him on solid ground.I am not one to judge and I like TOM and I would love to see him change for the better, before he drowns like so many other good actors.Like I said we all are human and make mistakes, and I just hope he will be able to over come his and survive the storm untill he can see clear what God has in store for him.Not every day do you find actors as good as Tom is,so I hope he really gets his head screw on right and grows up.>

I am not a big fan of Tom Cruise, but I understand where he is coming from. Scientology is based on healing the body/mind with one’s own will power, which is fueled by a higher power/energy (some call God). While I believe his approach is wrong, I honestly believe he has good intentions. Perhaps he can offer ‘insight’ in a more loving way, so that he is not perceived as being cocky or arrogant. I think he is just so happy and at a place in his life that brings him so much joy that he wants to share it with the world. Hasn’t anyone ever been in love? Do you remember the feelings associated with being in love? Let’s rejoice with him…perhaps the Karma will reflect on us one day too. The truth is we are spiritual beings having a human experience.>

Hmmm….well…lets see… Scientology should not be considered a religion in the first place. It is nothing more than a type of yoga, meditation, new age, positive thinking, mind over matter type thing. Even with all that, you still need God for all these other things to manifest and work in your life. You still need faith, right? Now about Tom, he is a weirdo type imo, and not the best actor, definitely overpaid, arrogant and misguided I believe. However I saw him in a clip for a promo premiere thingee, anyway, the photographer/reporter squirted Tom in the face with a water gun or fake camera, not sure, I myself would have slapped the shit out of the guy! because being caught off guard like that, its a startling feeling and knowing how people feel about him, Im sure it scared him and it could have as easily been a gun, my point is Tom handled that situation very well and I couldn’t help but have respect for that. HOWEVER, I have no respect for his judgment on others. I feel he’s just man trying to find himself and something to beleive in and gaining wisdom along the way, just as we are, I dont know. I use to be on anxiety/depression meds and THEY ARE DANGEROUS, and I truly believe they are not the way to go. I no longer take anything, I exercise and meditate and I pray and turn to GOD when Im down and need a lift. Pharmaceutical companies are all about the money and you are nothing more than their lab rats. AND THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD TODAY… GREED, POWER, SLOTH and all the other sins….and the ones sinning the most are the ones with all the money, the Movie stars, politicians, DRS, Greedy corps etc etc…Sure there are poor folk committing the same sins along with murder, rape, thief etc, but I cant help but ponder, that if these groups of people swapped roles, which group would be more grateful?>

Well, it’s about time Tom got his. At one time I thought depression was just for weak people. My Mother-in-law had a nervous breakdown and was one of the first females in an all male running grocery chain being a manager. She fell apart under the stress, it wasn’t just that, she was keeping years of secrets that were eating her up. I thought of her as a strong woman. I said she could just snap out of it! Well, guess what? It was only a few years later and I was depressed so don’t start pointed fingers dear Tom because you might be next in line!>

I began tiring of Tom Cruise about 10 years ago. Before that, I respected his work ethic as an actor, even though I wasn’t his biggest fan, I thought he was truly committed to his craft. But for a number of years, every film he has done seems to have been a Tom Cruise vehicle, with even the movie poster featuring his perfect hair (flowing in the wind) and his perfect teeth. Instead of growing, he seems to be growing more hysterical as time passes, and his behavior seems to me to be consistent with that of someone who either belongs to a cult, or feels he is losing his grip, and is growing ever more desperate to hang on to stardom. I feel his “religion” tells him that “it’s all about him” and that he can remain on top forever, and I think that reality is slapping him in the face, and he doesn’t like it. Recently I read an interview with Olivia de Havilland (she’s still alive, did y’all know that?) and she (Oscar-winning actor that she is) said it is just not normal for someone to stay on top forever. The universe eventually wants to give someone else a chance at “stardom.” Perhaps Tom just needs to get over himself.>

May just be me, but I’d put a lot more credibility into a respected doctor saying what he said about Post Partum Depression and its medications than a half assed actor who jumps up and down on couches. Tom needs to lie down on said couch and maybe take some of the meds he rants about.

It is a said and known that when you do things that are unfair, unjust or just bloody wrong, God or life or the universe will naturally “neutralize” you or put you in your place. I’m not surprised at what happened to Mr. Tom Cruise….he had it coming. It’s karma or a you reap what you sow kind of thing. I actually watched him and Matt Lauer converse on tv and was shocked and disappointed at how short-tempered, immature,narrow-minded and lacking in refinement Tom Cruise handled the talk. I mean hey, just because you believe so strongly in something(scientology in this case) and the other person you’re speakin with doesn’t, you dont antagonize them….especially if you’re watched by millions. Matt Lauer wasn’t being impolite in any way, on that show, but merely askin n talkin as any normal individual not familiar with scientology, would. Mr Cruise could’ve handled it without being harsh showin a temper. What actress Brooke Shields went through was real.Post-partum blues actually affects thousand of people worldwide and to a great extent medications do help. Other modes of treatment not involving pills are also helpful in many cases and I would welcome such -be it meditation or the use of herbs or energy enhancement methods, etc. …if I were in Mr Cruise’ shoes , though, I’d convey my views without being rude -that’s not difficult to do.The whole thing is an issue of the heart. Tom Cruise was inconsiderate and extremely insensitive to Brooke. Tom Cruise has talent no doubt and is no lawbreaker(I might be wrong there)but… I believe Mr Mission Impossible owes both Matt Lauer and Brooke Shields an apology – not for having his own convictions, but for being so rude, absolutely without manners totally insensitive to how people feel. It’s amazing how confident this actor this actor is- about a subject – Post partum blues — he knows so little about. Better read and do more research to learn more about things, than spend time jumpin on couches on talk shows – as the world watches.>

Maria, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE! I feel that Tom WAS rude and insensitive to Matt Lauer, and was just plain in someone else’s business in the case of Brooke Shields, who, by the way, handled her response to Cruise with poise and diplomacy and was not at all irresponsible. She seemed to remember HER celebrity status and what all that entailed: not ego-centrism. But, Mark, I think that you’re right too, that neither Tom nor Mel is going anywhere any time soon. P.S. My mistake in singling you out Patsy. Apparently, MANY of the posters here don’t bother to proofread before submitting. Thanks for pointing that out, J.H.!>

I find all this rather interesting. Tom is a very bankable actor. His movies tend to make a big bucks. So to say that Paramount is dumping because of greed is laughable. Tom Cruise is starting to sink into the bog of his own making. Ever since the Oprah show, he has become more unstable. His rants about medication and the whole mental health proffession have been souring people’s opinion of him. Both him and Mel Gibson find themselves in awkward situations. Both have managed to take their marquee status and managed to mess it up. I sure there will be somebody else who will come along and throw a tom of money at Tom. After all business is business. If the guy can just shut up for awhile and be low profile in the next year, he can easliy rebound for all this.>

On one hand, I don t want to bad-mouth the guy because I don t even know him, but his actions are, at best, strange. Yeah, he was (is?) a good actor; some of his movies are decent. But it s about how you act in your REAL life that gets people talking and not always in good ways. Now, whether or not Paramount gave a pink slip or Tommy decided to walk away, we ll never know; maybe the studio really did get fed up with Tom s actions. To be honest, Tom really didn t help his career any with his tantrums, his gymnastics on Oprah s couch or his denouncement of psychiatrists and medications. You don t insult the people who put you where you are not if you want to stay there. He is entitled to his opinions just like we all are, but like they say, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar . John Travolta is a devoted Scientologist, too but you don t see him ragging people, scolding or using pseudo-trampolines to declare his love for Kelly. Tom could learn a few things. As for Katie, well, even though these blogs are about Tom, the girl needs to get away. I like her–she is a decent actress, who although her acting doesn t set the world on fire (hey, any little Hollywood starlet could have done Rachel in Batman Begins) she doesn t deserve the trauma that is coming. You re right we won t be seeing Tom standing in the unemployment line, but I d like to see less of him in the coming future. Suri, here s hoping you look like your momma . Peace.>
