'Betty's' Not So Ugly, Just Kind of Odd
Perhaps, like me, when you saw the teasers for ABC's new show "Ugly Betty," you thought you'd be getting "Less Than Perfect" at a magazine rather than a television station: a cute sitcom wherein the ugly duckling teaches those around...
I was a loyal viewer of the original Colombian soap opera "Betty La Fea", thanks to my Colombian husband. I always complained that I would love to see Betty more assertive and not so smitten with her boss. I HATED the way the original ended, with a swan-like makeover, a wedding and an ugly baby. I wanted Betty to become the boss, agree to maybe sometimes date her paramour and to keep her glasses. My hubby and all of our Colombian friends said that I was a Gringa, so I would naturally want that stuff. Last night's premier granted my wish! Please, PLEASE don't write in a crush on the boss and a Cinderella trip to the beauty parlor!
I loved the show. I agree with Jen. Keep her the sweet ,but very intelligent "Ugly Betty"
Hi, I watched the original colombian version and loved it! I was delighted to see that the U.S. adaptation has kept the spirit of the series which was funny, intelligent and... funny!! In "Betty, la fea" the transformation came as a result of the personal journey Betty went through, and her boss was already in love with her before the makeover. Also it reinforces the idea that there are no ugly women just with bad style and/or little money!!
"(It could be argued that Betty is "ugly' only by Hollywood's standards--i.e., glasses and braces make a girl absolutely abhorent.)"
or
"One way that ABC could ensure that I stay tuned is to avoid having Betty whip off the glasses, lose the braces, and pluck her eyebrows; don't let the ugly duckling turn into a swan."
Is there any logic to this post? The writing is horrible, to wit: "Still, I'm not quite set on adding "Betty" to my regular viewing schedule just yet; but I will be giving it another try.">
Anonymous, Do you really not have anything better to do than nitpick the writing on this blog? Do you even read any other blogs and know what a blog is? Do you have a sense of humor? Lighten up, man! It's a blog about pop-culture... the fate of the world doesn't rest on it. --klm
I love "Ugly Betty!"
enough of this vanessa williams. we know she doesnt do anything around the office and has a one track mind to steal the company. evil people do not carry a show, it is lovable people that make me feel they are part of my family and i want to tune in each week to visit. keep up the continuing saga instead of each show independent of each other
