While I understand why so many critics gush about the talent of writer/producer Aaron Sorkin, last night’s episode of “Studio 60″ was a blatant reminder to me that this show is quite possibly more about Sorkin working out his personal issues than it is about examining a culture war.
In the second part of a two-part storyline that has centered around Harriet’s comments to the media about gay marriage, Harriet is suddenly asked by exec Jordan McDeere to cancel some singing engagements with a fictitious conservative Christian group entitled “Women United” because of the media firestorm that will ensue. Harriet is ambivalent about such a decision because she knows that there are many young girls who admire her as one of the few not-so-crazy Christians in the Hollywood limelight and who also attend these events.

What is interesting to me about this storyline is the behind-the scenes cause for this episode. Once again, Sorkin has shamelessly exploited his ex-girlfriend–Broadway diva and outspoken Christian celeb Kristin Chenoweth–by lifting events out of her life and putting them on the air, albeit with his own snarky twist.
Last fall Chenoweth was to sing at a series of conferences sponsored by an conservative Christian organization called “Women of Faith.” Her concerts were canceled after Chenoweth made comments in the media regarding gays. (For the record, Chenoweth is more outspoken about gay rights than Harriet is in the show.) In fact, Chenoweth even commented in a recent interview–jokingly it seems–that she is beginning to wonder when she will start getting some money from the show as compensation for the use of her likeness.
Well, Kristin, all I can say is, let’s wait and see how long it takes before that comment makes it into a future “Studio 60″ episode.

I couldn’t agree more about this show. Studio 60 is nothing more than a vehicle for Aaron Sorkin and NBC to beat Christians over the head because of our beliefs. I cannot stand the show!

The real quality of any good story is its meaning. With all of its flaws AND strengths, Studio 60 addresses the issues that are shaping the very real conversation (debate, argument, culture war) that is happening among Americans these days. There may be some merit in finding the connection between a storyline and the real event that inspired it. But if THAT is all the story means to you, then you may want to reconsider your thoughts before you rest on your laurels. Otherwise, you may as well commit your attention, and your blog, to stories whose meanings, ignored or not, are maybe not as important. Some shows that come to mind are Law and Order, Survivor, The Simple Life, Friday Night Lights . . . you know . . . entertainment. Peace and Love

I can not tell you how much i appreciate Studio 60 for its portrayal of some the issues that are for most in our culture right now. As a christian in San Francisco I can not tell you how many times I have had and seen the conversations that appear on the show about christianity, faith, homosexuality, right, left, etc. It is so refreshing to see and hear the battles and conversations that happen all around me every day. And I think that it explores the ideas and ideologies of both sides fairly and honestly and actually has a discussion about it.

THIS show? How about all episodes to date? Well at least that explains it, Chenoweth I mean. I don’t recall “Saturday Night Live” ever hitting us on the head with religion-bashing, yet it seems to be THE MAIN THEME on “Studio 60.” So why was the devout Kristin Chenoweth dating (and probably sleeping with) the uber-liberal Aaron Sorkin, and appearing on his equally liberal “West Wing?” and also on the very liberal “Prairie Home Companion” each year at Christmas? Also I disagree with the poster who said, “The real quality of any good story is its meaning.” The real quality of any good story (I think the poster means, “what makes a story good is”) and the answer is, its dramatic impact. It doesn’t have to “mean” anything, in fact the best stories specifically don’t. Dramatic television programming isn’t there for preaching or sending messages on one side or the other. It’s for storytelling, period.
