“American Idol”: Embarrassing Tryout Edition

posted by mkress | 12:31pm Monday January 22, 2007

Are the “American Idol” judges mean–and getting meaner by the season–or should contestants’ family and friends be more honest in advising them to stay off national TV? Our bloggers Ellen Leventry and Dena Ross debate this very topic, but what do you think? Watch these videos and use the comments box to let us know.

I don’t think the first guy that was singing on the article had such a bad voice. He just had a very strange expression on his face. I don’t know if I like this show any more because they make fun of people.

Mean is not cute, it isn’t smart and it isn’t cool, it’s just plain mean. Belittling someone is a reflection of character – or, more clearly, the lack thereof.

my curiosity will continue to ponder what goes through the minds of some who think they can sing. the fact that their friends and family think they can sing also frightens me.not trying to be mean, just stating the obvious here.

I belive that it takes all kinds of people to make life what it is… Now if those that can not sing dont try then how would they know they cant sing.?. If the judges cant judge honestly ( or be who they are ) what kind of show would it be.?. I (and almost everyone i know) love American Idol, and watch it faithfully. My only problem is when the judges make fun of peoples looks ,or styles. Thoses are things that the poeple really have NO control over.!. But in all real-ness the fact that some can sing and some simply should not is what makes the show great. If everyone could sing so wonderful then what is the point of the show. It is the only reality t.v. show that is REAL!!!!

It is incredibly sad when people who really trully cannot sing will actually go onstage in front of judges and make complete fools of themselves. They need to hire a singing coach to let them know if they have a good voice.Family and friends shouldn’t lead them on if they don’t have any singing talent. They need to be honest.Face it, it’s hard to go in front of judges and audition knowing that there are others out there better than you. You are also being compared to people who can REALLY sing like Paula Abdul herself as well as Janet Jackson, Josh Grobin, and Christina Aquilera. I believe Part of the reason American Idol has made it so long is because of the fact that Paula Abdul has been in the singing business herself. She really knows what is needed and if people have the talent. She doesn’t lead people on. This makes a great judge. People need to look at reality before making fools of themselves and wasting everybody else’s time.

A washed up has been, old broad and two wannabes… The judges are mean to the contestants because they can’t get into the spotlight any other way.

The fact that some of these people can’t sing is not a waste of anyone’s time, it is what makes this show so popular. More people watch the “elimination” episodes of American Idol than any other so that they can talk about it at work/school the next day. Without the less than talented contestants, this show would have a 5 show series. Unfortunately, some parents misunderstand being supportive as being agreeable. It is more supportive to encourage your child to strive for something they can achieve than it is to build false hopes. The world is cruel enough, there is no need to fuel that fire.
