Documentary Filmmaker Catches Haggard Before “The Fall”

posted by Donna Freitas

On January 25th, HBO will air the documentary “Friends of God: A Road Trip With Alexandra Pelosi,” which follows key people among the Christian evangelical right in America. Yes, Alexandra Pelosi, the filmmaker in question, is one of those Pelosis–her mother is none other than Nancy–and yes, one of those kep people she happened to follow is none other than Ted Haggard.

All of this documenting occurred before Ted Haggard’s very public sex scandal and very public fall from grace as a leader of the evangelical movement in the U.S. It also happened before Ms. Pelosi’s mom became the first woman Speaker of the House.

In her N.Y Times article “God, Mom and Country: A Filmmaker’s Odyssey,” Felicia R. Lee reports on Alexandra Pelosi’s uncertainty and dismay that Haggard happened to be the focus of her film, and her worry that a large part of her target audience–evangelicals–won’t tune in now that her mother has risen to such a prominent position in Congress on behalf of the Democrats:

People might love it or hate because of her mother or because of its association with Mr. Haggard, she said. But what she really wanted, Ms. Pelosi said, was to further the conversation about religion and culture… In the film Mr. Haggard explains the allure of evangelical Christianity and extols the primacy of sex among evangelicals. “I unfortunately chose the wrong leading man,” Ms. Pelosi said of Mr. Haggard, whom she picked for his credibility. She liked him, she said, and they spent a great deal of time together… After his fall, Ms. Pelosi scurried back to the editing room, saddened. “We had to take some stuff out,” she said. “But you can’t do an entire movie without the failed guy.”

Apart from the above worries, Ms. Pelosi said she “tried hard to make [evangelicals] look their best” and believes her film is sympathetic to this growing group of Americans who identify as evangelical. The jury is out, of course, until HBO airs the documentary.

What Price Would You Pay for Religious Freedom?
It’s a question that’s especially valid today as the Catholic Church battles with our government over the proposed healthcare mandate requiring faith-based institutions to cover contraception.  We ask ourselves if this is a breach of religious liberty and if so, how will this fight will end? Â

Since momma Pelosi is as evil as it gets, we can expect baby-Pelosi’s offsring to deliver a sour bunch of rotting fruit.Has Haggard ever encouraged anyone to embarce wrong-doing?Moma Pelosi has. Behind her granny masquerade is the slaughter of so many unborn “CHILDREN” that congress could not fit the bodies of the innocents so murdered by liberalism. Not to mention the thousands of children of broken families suffering at the hands of Hedonists such as momma-Pelosi.San Francisco will outlaw guns, but pass out condoms, lubes and needles to people far more dangerous and deadly (and death promoting) then NRA card holders.”HBO” the gay agenda crusading machine . . ., will paint Evangelical Christians in no other light then the enemy of the world. That is why I cancelled my subscription to HBO, Bravo, ABC, NBC, CBS, et al. Baby-Pelosi knows what she is doing “too.” The Left, whose comrade in arms, is Satan, knows all too well their enemy. The Evangelicals have faced this nemesis since the start of the Church. But “back in the day” Liberals and Progressives were known as Pagan-Romans.Now of course they’re known as the party of the current speaker of the house. Molech worsippers are not hard to see. Just watch how they act. First sacrifice innocent children, and then seek selfish desires. Sounds like the platform of the Democrats to me. HBO and Christians?Like oil and water. Will you ever see the kinds of people that become Christians, like the ones mentioned in the New Testament? The ones that used to engage in homosexuality, idolatry, forniction, (garden-variety hedonists) etc., etc., and rebellion against God?Not by watching HBO. And especially not by a Pelosi derived presentation. Any of Jezebel’s children turn out OK? The modern day abomination party of the left producing any prophets preaching repentance from sins? I mean real sins.Pelosi and her constituents (those like her) resemble bath houise Romans. Did Nero and Hadrian create supportive political outreach to the Christians? Two gay/bi-sexual “Roman” leaders that seem rather familiar in their opinions of Christians, compared to the common Leftist mental opinion of the 21st century. Nothing has changed much in the anti-Christian club. HBO, a Pelosi, and Christians?Yeeaaah. OK.

Is this comment from the compassionate christians that are controlling or think they are controlling anyone? What is your plan again besides bashing others?Sorry i’m not going to feed into that.. kinda like gossip i guess. no tanks.. nice that they have automatic blenders for soup now though .. boy talk about being threatened and lashing out.. i guess edukation isn’t the answer to everything.Pretty difficult to defend someone who says something and does another thing.. like haggart. .he must of hated himself living a lie. May someone help him atone for his sins of omission and deception.but i’m not waiting for the gov’t to do it. . real sins are the false statements made on high in the media of wmd’s and false this and that?i can understand the comments made but misdirected ..i guess it’s easy to demonize everyone when you are doing what you complain about.. i think it’s human nature.. what does this commenter have to gain by such venting misdirected ..seems like he has a grasp of the language but rebellion against god ?i guess he is doing what he is complaining about.. outside of himself is the problem and it wont’ go away..maybe instead of cancelling his subscription which is nice to be able to afford it. . i would subscribe if he is willing for me to do some research in to this entertainment as they call it. . and i would submit a research paper . on it.but it as you know take time to document all this filth and it might take a decade or two to really get a grasp of this.. so bear with me. . i guess i’m already painted by some. but the brush is sometimes pin the tail on the monkey elephant emu did i leave anything out . God bless and cast your trust in the lord not in people that talk about it but those that are living it oh they won’t be on the screen anytime soon.. btw i ‘m taking a social awareness and win friends and influence people seminar and study group. . i guess tolerance is a real big one that we are tackling now. so.. i hope you find some peace today .. love your enemies

I plan on renting this video thanks to this interesting review. I hope that some of the interview will be on what these leading figures think of the Apocalypse, as that’s what I’m writing on for my thesis, so I think they would be a good source along with kirch and Joss Whedon. The comments that are left here always amuse me to the upteenth level of embarassment for my own religion. The documentary follows the life of Ted Haggard before his “fall from Grace.” The film maker is attempting to be “sympathetic to this growing group of Americans who identify as evangelical.” In short… stuff it.

interesting but based on that article Alexandra Pelosi sounds like your average over-isolated, big idea trustafarian kid with a well-connected circuit to capitalize on, who’s never met herself a smooth-talking preacherman. siding between Paris Hilton and Jesus? are you kidding me? Jesus? if you actually look at their tactics and *theology* Evangelical elites twistedly and manipulatively use Jesus for their own ends–which is generally a lot of money, status and position for themselves while continually promoting ideas and policies that in effect erode the overall life stability and security for their mass of followers–while they *lovingly* demand unquestioning religious devotion/delusion to their *cause*. I’m sure Jesus would love that. And Paris Hilton? If you actually unearth their webs of connections and behavior, Evangelical elites are some of the most shameless capitalist-loving whores to ever walk on the planet–they’re basically Paris Hiltons in suits with much better communication skills. Not only that they are more scheming with more dangerous aspirations. Just look at that Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay, Ralph Reid scandal!! one example, but it’s all right there. not that there aren’t exceptions, but overall it sounds like a strange false dichotomy if there ever was one. plus her criticisms of capitalism and money sound a little disengenous when you consider she certainly wouldn’t be where she is if it wasn’t for the wealth and connections of her own family.

this HBO did hang around New Life for a long time, multiple tapings; so this should be a well-thought piece.i’d like to believe she did the subject justice, though i of course reserve judgment before seeing.best, -joshMshep
