Salon Slams Oprah for Ugly “Secret”

posted by Donna Freitas

I’ve already ranted twice about the latest horrifying New Age get-rich quick craze–”The Secret.” But according to Peter Birkenhead of Salon.com, I’m not alone in feeling there is still more to reckon with as this book’s popularity rises and reveals some of the “secrets” of people who buy it and endorse its ideas.

Like Oprah for example.

In “Oprah’s Ugly Secret,” not only does Birkenhead take her to task for adding prestige to “The Secret,” but he worries that, alongside the prestige, she also adds “more venality [to it], than any previous self-help scam.”

He continues powerfully: “Why ‘venality’? Because, with survivors of Auschwitz still alive, Oprah writes this about “The Secret” on her Web site: ‘the energy you put into the world–both good and bad–is exactly what comes back to you. This means you create the circumstances of your life with the choices you make every day.’

“‘Venality,’ because Oprah, in the age of AIDS, is advertising a book that says, ‘You cannot catch anything unless you think you can, and thinking you can is inviting it to you with your thought.’ ‘Venality,’ because Oprah, from a studio within walking distance of Chicago’s notorious Cabrini Green Projects, pitches a book that says, ‘The only reason any person does not have enough money is because they are blocking money from coming to them with their thoughts.’”

Scariest of all is Birkenhead’s wider, worldly reflections on what “The Secret” implies about the way the world works–rewarding some and punishing others: “Oprah recently opened, with much fanfare, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa, and as I watched the network news stories about it, I couldn’t get ‘The Secret’ out of my mind,” Birkenhead writes. “I kept wondering what would happen if professor Sam Mhlongo, South Africa’s chief family practitioner who famously said that HIV doesn’t cause AIDS, read about Oprah’s connection to ‘The Secret’ and found support there for his claim.

“I wondered if the students of the academy would read ‘The Secret’ and start to believe that their parents deserved to be poor, or that the people of Darfur summoned the Janjaweed with ‘bad thoughts.’ Will the heavier girls be told, as readers of ‘The Secret’ are, that food doesn’t cause weight gain–thinking about weight gain does? Will they be told to not even look at fat people, as ‘The Secret’ advises?” Birkenhead concludes, “Oprah is already promoting these ideas to her television audience. Why wouldn’t she espouse them to her students?”

I normally love Oprah and believe she does some wonderful things with her show, her power, and her money. But, like Birkenhead, I am not only dismayed but seriously alarmed that she’s gotten behind “The Secret.” Horrified actually. Something is seriously wrong in the Oprahworld.

There is no secret to ‘The Secret.” It’s all about positive thinking… a topic that Norman Vincent Peale introduced so many many years ago (and he wasn’t the first). All of the self help books are about “The Secret.” When you think positive, so to speak, you allow yourself to be open to the circumstances that allow you to proceed in a constructive and productive way. When you’re positive about yourself and refuse to accentuate the NEGATIVE, you tend to recognize the clues that come from people too. And speaking of HORRIBLE things in this world, some people do make it through; Having several close relatives who survived the extermination camps, I would think that those who made it out of Auschwitz had to think about SURVIVAL and the desire to SURVIVE so that they would live to bear witness. This to me is the power of positive thinking in it’s most RAW and powerful form.

Mind expansion is for everybody but it does takes work and a lot of research and study, now in regard of Sam Mholngo, he is not the exception, there is an organization named “Monarca” that operates in Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Peru. They have about 800 documented cases of people who was diagnosed with aids and under the help of doctor Flores, and other professionals they have had a full recovery… ( Don’t believe my words, believe the documents because they are available, if you know Spanish you can read about it in this address en http://www.geocities.com/vihlapuerta) Now I think that all this fuzz over the secret is pure human jealousy … why can’t we just be happy for others in their success? now what’s beyond me, is that when it comes to god -in any religion. Nobody ever questions their existence and we can not see it! neither his existence has ever been proof, and yet we hold to it. why can’t we accept a new idea that the only think is asking us for is to use the brain in a positive way… Call me crazy, but if the old ways of thinking are not working ( and this is obvious around us everywhere) I am pro anyone who talks about union instead of differences.

I believe that the basic premise of The Secret does work. It is about attracting positive into your life through the power of the Universe. I do not believe that it is possible to go through through life with no trials and tribulations, however. We would never learn the powerful lessons that life teaches. Nature is not selective. Generations have ruined the Earth’s ecosystem, and cancer is more widespread than ever, between that and our lifestyles. My daughter died at fifteen almost four years ago from Leiomyosarcoma, a very rare and aggressive adult cancer. She did not bring this cancer to herself by her thoughts. A fifteen year old girl is thinking about boys, and having fun – not cancer. Did I attract it? I didn’t even consider she had cancer when I knew she had this huge growth in her abdomen. I never thought ‘cancer’ until the surgeon removed it and told me it was a malignant tumor! I am thinking about a cure constantly, and I haven’t attracted that yet… As far as Oprah goes, I used to be a huge fan. Last year, another teenager who has the same cancer as my daughter wanted to meet Oprah for her wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She wanted to bring awareness to this disease, because there is hardly any funding for research to find a cure. Oprah’s “people” said “She doesn’t meet Wish Kids.” Perhaps she’s afraid if she LOOKS at this girl, she’ll get her cancer??? So instead, this little girl and her family went to Hawaii. Oprah truly missed a huge opportunity to make a difference here at home for us ‘common folks’. Here is the REAL Secret – Oprah is all about appearances. Shame on her! I believe you need to ask Oprah’s input before you put your own twisted interpretation on how one thought is the answer for ever thought. It looks like you are taking what she believes as a way for you to express what you really think she actually believes. I’m sure that if you were to ask Oprah, she would explain to you that the limits you put on her belief does not represent the endless answers as to why people get what’s coming to them. Each case is an isolated incidence. Before you begin speaking for someone else and their belief, do some more research to get a better understanding and interpretation. You are using your finite mind to try and figure out her views on infinite answers, results and questions that are specifically different for each case. I guarantee that if you were to ask her, the majority of answers she reveals will not mirror the majority of yours.

I absolutely agree with Camille. Also the Secret is just a tool that shows you how to be more positive in your life. It has been proven that a person that is negative all the time does attract a lot more negative things into their lives. A person that live a predominantly positive life have a tendency to have a lot more positive things happen to them. Not to say that positive people don’t experience negative things, but they are able to move through the circumstances more gracefully. It even states that in the Bible “As a man thinketh, so is he”. I agree with Gabby. The Holocaust was horrific as well as POVERTY and AIDS. We learn from our past experiences. We have the ability (God) given ability to choose to survive of parish (if it is in our WILL POWER to do so). Everything is done for a REASON. God allows things to happen to us so we can confirm our FAITH and put our trust in HIM and HIM ALONG. If we survive horrible things in our lives we can come back and give testimony to GOD S GREATNEES. We have the ability to choose our own fate once we have the PROPER knowledge. Jesus said: My people parish for lack of knowledge ! It often may be in an instant or it may take years to get the knowledge. The KEY or the SECRET is, once we have the knowledge to know God s WILL and PURPOSE we make better CHOICES. We learn from our PAST to make better choices for the NOW and the FUTURE.

C’mon.. If you think about it , positivity does infact attract more positivity. That’s not to say that The Secret is a “cure all.” It works, but it has a great deal to do with personal CHOICE. Anyone with half a brain can figure this out on his/her own.For all those “other” folks who think it’s all about the thought process and has nothing to do with using your talents and abilities to help propell you to where you wish to be…WATCH THE DVD AGAIN, PLEASE. You didn’t quite get it the first time. It’s about combining positive thinking with hard work and making good choices…with doing what you can to help yourself first, and relying on faith for the rest. Born Again Christians all over the world already do this…. Before I had ever heard about the law of attraction, I’d experienced it in my own life. Millions of others have as well. I can recall numerous times growing up when the law of attraction was indeed, very effective. My parents never had a lot of money. When they divorced, my mother had even less.. However, she always kept a positive attitude and believed that we would be o.k….and WE WERE! My Mom was a staunch Roman Catholic who made sure we went to church every sunday. And she always gave credit to God for her achievements. But she was also a very positive individual. Yes, she worked hard. Yes, she sacrificed much and made good choices for our family. She always managed to keep food on the table, keep the utilities on and pay for our three bedroom house ….all on a secretaries salary of $220.00 a week and even without child support from my Dad. I truly, truly believe that my Mom accomplished all that she did because anything less would have simply been unnaceptable to her. She also put herself through nursing school and eventually landed a job at one of the most prestigious universities in the U.S.. She married an attractive gentleman who has the same drive and ambition she does. They are happy and live VERY comfortably….in their brand new, custom built New England mansion. That being said, any idiot knows that the first law of success is to believe in your own worth and ability. Any good business person knows “The Secret”. If you continually tell yourself you can’t do a thing, or can’t have a thing, you won’t get too far in your endeavors.

This “Secret” is evidently the worst – kept one around. I don’t really care what Oprah thinks or doesn’t think of it, but I do agree that what you get out of life is what you put into it, meaning that if you think positive thoughts — and here’s the kicker — DO POSITIVE ACTIONS EACH DAY TO MOVE TOWARDS YOUR GOALS, you’ll meet with success. That’s not brain surgery, friends. But the point is, you just can’t let life roll over you. Sometimes you don’t get what you asked for. Oftentimes, though, what you do get is just as good or better than what you wanted in the first place. So, Oprah can part the seas all she wants. She’s just parting seas for ships that have already sailed.

Whatever the case may be we cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Who’s to say that God didnt give that secret to Oprah to touch someone elses life? I am all for finding the truth yourself, don’t just take someone else’s word for it. Wether you think the power of your thoughts manifest the things you find showing up in your life or not… you can easily prove it, by trying it yourself. Start with something small like a parking space or hearing from a distant friend or relative. Don’t tell anyone, just ask for it with your thoughts, believe it is manifesting, feel the feelings of it’s arrival and be grateful. It’s really not a Secret, we know this stuff works, we have just forgotten it. Don’t believe me, try it yourself. But remember you have to believe. P.S. Don’t be hating on people, especially Oprah, because you send that energy out, guess what comes back to you. You can try this too, but I suspect you critics already know this.

While I do believe that positive thinking helps to create a happier and more fulfilled life, I am concerned with the message of The Secret and other media outlets that are spreading similar messages. If we really can create our world and life experiences through our thoughts, why are so many using their thoughts to focus on gaining monetary wealth? What about using our thoughts to create peace in our world…a safer place for our children…or a clean and healthy environment? Why just money? Also, those that are devoted to the premise that thoughts create reality seem to forget that others around them have their own thoughts about how the world should be…and the thoughts from different individuals don’t always correspond. I have experienced this personally; someone who is so in to this stuff, that they completely ignore the hopes and dreams of those around them, and focus on creating their version of the perfect world. If you get in the way of what they think…watch out. I’m hoping that The Secret, the teachings of Abraham, and the rest of this stuff has a short life span and fades quickly.

I agree in large with the Salon article, but I also believe in positive thinking and mind over matter as the FIRST cause of all things and circumstances in the physical realm. My problem with Oprah and the Self-Help industry is the coarse and materialistic way in which they shape the ‘message’. I don’t believe in flouting such a ‘secret’ on a, i believe, false basis – ‘to help everyone get rich and what they want’. Those who are ready to know and have the wisdom and maturity to use such a law wisely will find it from much more eloquent, wise and far less self-interested sources such as the Christian Bible, Buddhist philosophy, and the thinkers from earlier ages. For those of you who are skeptics, what a shame! This article is based purely on opinion. When you have some had core EVIDENCE that “The Secret” doesn’t work, then go ahead and tell the world. Until then, don’t spread your negativity to others. I have been reading books on the topic of manifestation for many years, and yes it works. The details written in your article such as, thinking about weight gain causes weight gain, shows that you have no knowledge at all in how the mind works and are speaking from the point of view of someone with absolutely no knowledge in this area. I can see that you have not read one book on this topic. Read these books and then come back and write your article again: “Excuse me your life is waiting” by Lynn Grabhorn “Ask and it is Given” by Esther and Jerry Hicks “The art of Deliverate Intent” by Hicks “The law of Attraction” by Esther and Jerry Hicks “The Law of Attraction” by Michael Losier “The Game of Life and how to play it” by Florence Shinn “Take a Moment and Create your Life” by Joanne Rodasta “The Divine Matrix” by Greg Braden “The Attractor Factor” by Joe Vitale “The Biology of Belief” by Bruce Lipton “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay That is just to name a few. I have read all of the above mentioned books. To anyone reading this and being skeptical, read the above books and watch your skepticism disappear. This is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing. You only criticize what you don’t understand and from your article, you don’t understand anything. Would you rather walk around asking yourself the meaning of life and how to change your current conditions? Or, would you rather do something about it? Do yourself a favor, and read a book before shooting down someone who has read many and actually done their homework.

Also, this is not just a get rich scam. It is about using your thoughts, feelings AND emotions to change your life for the better. This includes your health, your relationships, your happiness and YES your financial situation and everything else. This knowledge has been available and written in many books for hundreds of years, it is not new. Those of you that are disagreeing, have two choices, believe it is BS and sit there and keep your life the way it is, or try changing your mind, thoughts, feelings and emotions and concurrently your life. It can’t hurt to try, now can it? How else can you explain miraculous healings from countless cancer patients who had no chemotherapy or other medical treatments? These alleged “miracles” are nothing more than a matter of changing your mind. YOur life up to this point is a collaboration of your thoughts, from the time you were able to think. Change how you think and you will change your life, starting right now. This is much more than just positive thinking. For those of you who are beginners and would like knowledge in the area of manifestion, I recommend reading “The Law of Attraction” by Michael Losier or “Excuse me Your life is waiting” by Grabhorn. Those of you that need some scientific evidence to believe, try reading “The Biology of Belief” by Lipton, “Take a Moment and Create your Life’ By Joanne Rodasta and “The Divine Matrix” by Greg Braden. How do you think Jesus turned water into wine? Magic? Come on now….only magic of the mind. I am sure you are aware that we humans only use something like 8% of our brains. What do you think the other 92% is for? Cramming more factual knowledge in? I think not. Do yourself a favor and read some books, before shooting down someone who has done much research. It simply reinforces what is now being almost universally recognized as a universal principle. You can embrace your own religion and still believe in the magic of The Secret. If you’re willing to have an open mind you’ll discover that The Secret is an extension of miracles — medical healing through the positive power/energy of belief and acceptance. It IS prayer if you desire to call it that … and it IS God, Infinite Intelligence, The Divine. The Secret is nothing to be afraid of. Miracles happen through the energy of belief and accepance. The Secret advocates what a person thinks becomes reality. In the examples sited in the article, Salon Slams Oprah for Ugly “Secret,” many of those people’s thoughts manifested from fear, poverty and political corruption. The Secret is not a blame game, it is asking us to begin thinking consciously and examine the thoughts that produced our global history. Oprah’s students are probably already conscious of The Secret … watching the movie or reading the book would only confirm what they have already experienced. They should be proud of themselves because their thoughts, whether spiritual or survival, have led them to this point.

I agree with the Secret’s premise – positive thinking _tends to_ attract positive things in our lives, and makes us susceptible to acknowledging positive and quickly dismissing negative things/thoughts. However, staying positive all the time requires tremendous effort. It is NOT easy to remain positive at all times. You have to keep putting yourself in a trance nearly constantly, for at least a number of times during the day, willingly thinking positive things, quickly “snapping” out of negative thoughts, and just not allowing your soul to become encumbered by merely the negative. Whether someone has the right to charge money to tell you this because either it looks obvious to you or because you have trivialized it to the point of not being important and have begun to take life too seriously, is a topic for an economic discussion rather than gossip on blogs. Everyone has the right to receive money for offering a service – and if the buyer perceived value in such service, then that is all that mattered. Not your opinion on whether someone paying for a life coach or behavioural counseling, or a self improvement course. If all these cynics are so perfect, and happy and content, then they can just laugh off the other fools who want to believe fairy tales about ‘feeling happy’. Mmkay now?

The Secret is neither new nor secret. It is a rehash of what was called “New Thought” around 1900 and is usually pretty successful unless one is in some sort of dreadful mess to begin with like living in Darfur. That being said, the only thing more boring that Oprah are the people who think that AIDS and the Holocaust actually matter anymore. Those things are just so so last century. But then so is Oprah.

I just bought a copy of The Secret DVD and I don’t think that it’s really anti-religious. Cultivating the mind is something that God would want us to do! I relly feel like The Secret helped think in an improved manner.
