‘Battlestar Galactica’ Goes Supernova

posted by Ellen Leventry | 6:15pm Friday June 1, 2007

In announcement that will surely crush every sci-fi fanboy and fangirl out there, not to mention this reporter, Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, executive producers of “Battlestar Galactica,” have decided that season four will be the last for the Peabody Award-winning series.

“This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and finally, an end,” Eick and Morre stated in a Sci-Fi Channel press release. “Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end and we’ve decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. … And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there–we’re going out with a bang.”

While I have no doubt that the show will go out in a spectacular fashion, it doesn’t make up for the void “Galactica” will leave behind. Not only is it the best science-fiction on television right now (and clearly re-energized the genre), but it is also the most timely and thought-provoking show on television. Name another show that is able to deal with post-9/11 cultural and spiritual paradigms with such aplomb. Hence the afore-mentioned Peabody Award.

In addition, “Galactica” has been honored as one of the 10 Outstanding Television Programs of the Year by the American Film Institute (AFI) for two years running and second top-most sci-fi project–in television or film–of the past 25 years by Entertainment Weekly. This is a quality show and will be sorely missed.

Although more details will be forthcoming about the fantastic final season this afternoon during a conference call, all this fangirl can say is “frak.”

As much as I’ll miss it… It is better to have a planned arc, and stick to it, than to draw it out and wind up forced to end by ratings, or just ‘stop’.

Babylon 5 also had a predetermined termination date and was better for that. If only ‘Heros’ had been limited to one season…

Wow! This is a shocker and a disappointment. I was afraid they’d say there would be no season four. But the other posters are right: It’s better to go out on top and leave fans wanting more, than to drag on for seven years and endure diminishing quality. I’ve always been a SF fan, but Galactica transcends genre to become one of the best series ever on TV. From the acting to the plot to the music, BG rules! I’m so there for season four, and I’ll miss it dearly when it’s gone. Part of BG’s appeal for me is its spirituality. I think it makes total sense to give a nod to it on Bnet.

i’ll miss BSG deeply, but i think it is better to have an ending planned. when a show can go on and on forever it loses something. i’m right there tho with the writing in yelling “frak”.

I just can’t believe another good sci-fi go’s by the wayside. Not to mention the untimely demise of Star Trek and another potential hit Earth2.This should have ended at least at Earth.

Another good show leaves the airway’s prematurely.Star Trek and another potentially good show Earth 2 also left too soon. This should at least end up by Galactica reaching Earth!

I loved the show; hated trying to guess where the frak the story line was headed. …and to see the show forced into a panic ending, that either comes too soon or leaves us hanging, will lead to either a A) movie or B) new series. To BattleStar Galactica… Live Long and Prosper (in syndication)!
