‘Grey’s’ Departure: Sayonara, Isaiah

posted by Ellen Leventry | 5:00pm Friday June 8, 2007

Isaiah070608.jpgDr. Burke has been asked to scrub out of “Grey’s Anatomy” for good. Entertainment Weekly reports that ABC Studios will not renew Isaiah Washington’s contract with the hit show, due to what they call “a pattern of suspicious behavior by Washington that, according to press reports, goes back as far as 1997 on the set of the TV show ‘High Incident.’”
Last fall, Washington reportedly referred to co-star T.R. Knight (who was not “out” at the time) with an anti-gay slur and reportedly got into fisticuffs with McDreamy himself, Patrick Dempsey, who was coming to Knight’s defense. Axes seemed buried until Washington denied to the press at the Golden Globes that the incident had occurred even after making an apologetic statement.
And while Washington entered a rehabilitation program, taped a public service announcement for GLAAD and thanked his co-star Katherine Heigl for letting him have it publicly, that still wasn’t enough to keep his Dr. Burke on staff at Seattle Grace.
Many were calling for Washington’s ouster immediately following the slur, including gossip maven Perez Hilton, and it would seem that the decision to terminate the actor’s contract should have followed more closely on the heels of the incident. Certainly, this was a difficult and dynamic decision for the production company, but the fact that the season finale wrapped up in such a way that either Knight’s or Washington’s character could be written off seems a bit manipulative, not only to the audience (heck, that’s what cliffhangers do!), but to Washington as well.
While I am in no way defending Washington’s actions, it seems a bit disingenuous of the production company to take this long to dismiss him. He went to rehab, he’s working with GLAAD, even Heigl accepted his apology. Was he told he could stay if he attended rehab? Who knows. Maybe they were trying to work it out, but one party felt they could no longer work with Washington; or maybe he was simply becoming a huge insurance liability. Maybe Knight’s loveable George brings in better ratings than the inscrutable Burke.
Regardless, it seems that the drama off-set will continue to outpace the drama on-screen. Washington released a statement, a la Peter Finch in “Network,” saying “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.” Stay tuned.

Didn’t God say that He hates homosexuality? Why is homosexuality acceptable? Why are those who make comments against homosexuals punished. It’s not fair for Isaiah Washington to be put through rehabilitation and then fired. Maybe everyone else needs to be rehabilitated.

Grey’s Anatomy, is so awesome. All the cast appeared to work so well together. I would not like either one, Burke or George to leave. However, intolerance should not be ignored. How would the story have played down if it was George that made slur remarks about Burks race instead of his sexual preferences. It would probably be instantaneous George’s leaving the show if the story had played down that way. Do hope they can work it out and both stay. They each contribute so much to the series.

I think Isaiah should stay. He apologized, went through rehab and did work with GLAAD. A lot of other actors have done worse and still stay on the job!
I am a huge fan of Grey’s Anatomy but, I find it difficult now to believe in Knight’s character who is married and having an affair with a woman, when I know he is really gay. Perhaps they should work his coming out into the show instead of the marriage aspect of it. After all, that would make it more believable than him being married and having an affair.

CARLA… I SUPPOSE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE WORTHY OF THROWING THE FIRST STONE?
GOD LOVES AND FORGIVES EVERYONE. I LOVE GREYS AND AM SAD TO SEE “DR. BURK” GO BUT IF HE HAS TO I HOPE THEY MAKE IT EXCITING. MAYBE HE COULD CATCH AN ILLNESS FROM A PATIENT OR GET INTOXICATED AND MAKE OUT WITH A HOMOSEXUAL MAN AND END UP IN THE LOONEY BIN THEN ONLY MAKE SOME GUEST APPEARANCES.
I LOVE THE SHOW, LETS ALL JUST TRY TO GET ALONG.

I think it’s disgraceful that the company made Isaiah jump through hoops to only fire him. But I knew they would fire him, it was predictable, how they started scaling down his role, because Dr Burke was instrumental in the series because of his characters’ demeanor, professionalism. People liked and respected him in that position immensly. However, they should have manned up and fired him initially, instead of leading him on. If he knew he would be fired, do you think he would have done all that rehab? And if George would have called him the N word, he would not have been fired, his character is too likeable and because white folks have been doing that for years, they would have done damage control and saved him. It’s too bad that these two grown men could not have worked things out. Watch now what happens to the show. It will begin to go downhill because of the conflict that is going to be forever associated with the show and in the casts’ minds. I also agree with someone in an earlier comment that it’s disengenuous to make George (gay George) a womanizer, adulterer. Make him leave his wife for a man, because that is what he is, gay. The womanizing thing doesn’t work for me because he doesn’t fit the role. GLADD is all over the television, the movies, etc.,. Come on people, let’s have some decency about ourselves and focus on more important things in life than calling people names. Calling him a fag isn’t going to destroy his image of himself. There is a war going on and children being kidnapped and killed everyday, not to mention the poor are expanding to the middle class. With all the money that GLADD has, do something more meaningful than to pick on some little bitty black man that now, thanks to you will have nothing. His career is over. Good job GLADD! Look what coming out did for Rosie O’Donnel, Ellen DeGeneres, Ann Heche. He will be fine, but Isaiah is done. Stick a fork in him, he is done.

I love Grey’s An as well! I’m upset that they fired Isaiah Washington; I loved his role. T.R. Knight’s “George” started to get on my nerves when they did the storyline regarding his father. It’s a huge mistake to take out Dr. Burke’s role; he had just enough arrogance to make you borderline hate him then he would hit you with this vulnerable love for Christine that is/was completely believable. I’ve never believed George as a love interest to Meredith, Izzie or this other woman; I didn’t know why until the media reports surfaced then it made sense. We’ve experienced a difficult workmate and we all know the wish for that person to leave, but as we also know when that person is a “key” the company will not let the troublesome person go. I wish both to stay and to ACT like grown-ups and keep the excellent storyline going.

I think that this has gone too far he appeared to have made amends why can’t it go at that? What does he have to do to be able to put that behind him? For once why can’t the producers accept great talent, and back their actors we all fall in life isn’t the old saying Dust yourself off and get back into the game??
I will miss his character and talent I hope that this show can move forward with continued success less any other pitfalls. I believe that he made a very sincere effort to make amends I pray he can move on to higher ground.

Isaish Washington made a mistake, was sent to rehab, apologized. It appears that As usual the black individual had to overcompensate for his error and yet he was still not forgiven. A form of reverse prejudice being demonstrated. The terrible thing is that T.R. knight will be looked at the innocent and poor victim. Im sure, at one time or another, all of the characters on the show has had some kind of altercation in their past ether professional and or off site. NO ONE IS PERFECT.

I just watched Isiah Washington on Larry King. If he did not call TR a faggot, then why did TR run all over town doing talk shows saying that Isiash called him a faggot. By TR lying if indeed he did lie, TR and Patrick Dempsey caused someone (Isiash)to lose their job.
It’s not right. Isiash should seek recourse.
