The Judgment of Paris Hilton

posted by Ellen Leventry | 1:25pm Tuesday June 12, 2007

In Dante’s “Divine Comedy,” the soul of Paris, the mythological King of Troy, is battered eternally by gale-force winds for partaking in the sin of lust. And, while one could draw a comparison to Paris Hilton’s in-and-out incarcerations, it seems more analogous to our experience, dear readers: We are constantly blown about by the hot air coming forth from Paris herself.
The Associated Press (via CNN) reported yesterday that Hilton opened up to pre-Oprah confessor Barbara Walters during her brief stint under house arrest, saying that jail time has changed her and that she “would like to make a difference. … God has given me this new chance.”
But apparently jail time hasn’t changed her that much, she still has a love of the spotlight. The AP goes on to report that Hilton’s mother, Kathy, was speaking with Walters by phone when Paris beeped in on the other line, found out with whom her mother was speaking, and asked to have a conversation with Walters.
Was the first part of her prison experience traumatic for Hilton? Without a doubt. It would be for anyone, much less a privileged socialite. But three days in jail doesn’t seem enough time to illicit a jail-time conversion. Heck, Malcom X had already done a three-year stint in jail and was serving another 8-10 year sentence when he joined the Nation of Islam. (Maybe Hilton’s removal of her ever-present blue contact lenses is akin to the blinding conversion Saul/Paul experienced on the road to Damascus?)

Unlike many people, I don’t take glee in her assignment and reassignment–who knows how severe her “medical emergency” was? But the fact is that the decisions to release and reincarcerate the sometime-actress were made by outside forces. And while her extravagant, entitled lifestyle and “dumb blonde” attitude would suggest a lack of a deep spiritual life, I’m willing to give Hilton the benefit of the doubt that she does think of things greater than herself. She was (for what it’s worth), at one time spotted attending the Kabbalah Center and sporting a red yarn bracelet.
While it is not known if Paris still feels that God has given her a second chance, now that she has been sent back to the big house, I hope that she does try and make a difference when she’s finally out. And it doesn’t have to be dramatic–like curing cancer, solving world hunger, saving puppies from burning buildings, or leading a PETA campaign for chicken’s rights. I hope Paris lays low, lives a truly simple life and takes stock for a while–allowing us, dear readers, to batten down the hatches in preparation for the next celebutante’s incarceration/rehabilitation.

How can any of us cast stones? I have a son, who was arrested this week for having an open container of alcohol (passenger was under age and had it in his book bag). Am I going to hire a lawyer? Of course, and I’m not wealthy. Is it the worst charge in the world? No it isn’t. Am I concerned? Of course I am. But this illudes common sense. To the Paris Hilton’s of the world the charge didn’t seem that dramatic to her as well.
Now there are a lot of people in the Paris machine. People to open mail, read mail, handle finances, court dates, figure things out. Someone let her down and she let herself down. Leave her alone and let the lawyers figure things out.
Yes everyone needs to be responsible but law enforcement needs to be channeled into solving the violent crimes and not the misdemeanors.
Public service and AA would have been sufficient for her.
We’ve all spent far too much time on this, Paris is loved, clearly she has something remarkable. Let her grow and learn and let her team handle it all. Those who sit in judgement usually have it hit them back in time.

Paris is at fault for the decisions she makes on how to live her life but the paparazzi and media in general are at fault for continuing to hound this “poor” girl everywhere she goes.
I would prefer to see something and someone more newsworthy taking up the space on the page and the airwaves. So let her do her time in peace and hopefully she will go home and take stock of what she has done with her life to date compared to what she could do with her life and will make some major adjustments. Life should leave a sweet taste in our mouths and all Paris has is a spoonful of ash.

My son was arrested for drunk driving. It was in the wee hours of the
morning and no accident at all. Was stopped by an officer. He went straight to jail. Because of this he lost his job. Why should Paris be treated any differently. She not only did this but violated parole and drove with a suspended license. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!

This girl is a prime example of why parents should not be chastised for spanking their kids. The world is producing more and more “adults” (who are actually old children) who received “time outs” in rooms containing TVs, DVDs, cell phones, computers and toys. What is that??? She is obviously the product of very loose parenting and received anything she wanted for the asking. Poor kid should have been receiving some good life values.
I feel sorry for her. But we come on this earth to teach and to learn. Perhaps she was chosen to be an example of what not to do and how not to be, on this earth. Unfortunately, she has too many young followers who think of her as an idol. Pray for her. Deep down, she surely cannot be a happy person. And special treatment for disobeying the law should not even enter into her situation. Your kids and mine would not be receiving special favors if the tables were turned.

Paris hilton. Why is she so popular.MEDIA.I find her to be a criminal. Why do people who have money get treated different? She continues to break the law so she should be punished.I may not be saying she is a violent offender but how long is it gonna take before she kills someone driving drunk?DUI’S.HOW MANY DOES SHE HAVE?I don’t judge her as a person.i don’t know her nor do i care to listen to stories about her.it’s a constant battle that should be handled by the law.Yes,jail is a horrible place but if you continue to break the law, then you shouldn’t be surprised when you get sent there. Also, why is it that every time someone gets in trouble thats when they turn to God?Why don’t you ever see pictures of her coming out of church or praising God?Yes,forgiveness is biblical. But lets remember that when a person kills someone forgiveness does not bring them back.I have a constant battle trying to explain to my 3 kids whats right and wrong.i have to answer questions like”how can you be not be guilty in court and then be guilty in a liability suit”?How do i answer that? How about we all forget about Paris Hilton and spend more time praying for whats going on this world.Thats what really matters.

Paris Hilton is a joke, the media seems to think the country really is troubled by this “dumb blonde” who has never had to work for anything or never contributed anything, except some porno on the internet. I never understood why people make a big deal about her, she can’t act or sing but is always in the spotlight. Also, that isn’t her money, she didn’t earn it, her father did. The best thing for him to do, which he won’t, is to cut her off until she learns how it is to respect things better and pay her own way. She is a tramp, a rich tramp and it sickens me to see all these poor kids overseas fighting against terrorists while she is running around taking freedom for granted. She will never give her life to god, that’s a big excuse, she hasn’t been in there long enough to have learned anything, she will be back in full force when she gets out. Give me a break. In fact, I’m done here she isn’t worth a the spit in my mouth.

I’m sorry, but the whole thing is very unstable. Ok, so a well known celberty goes to jail. With all the things that are going on in the world you would think that we would be focused on these issues. For instance, The War ,Gas Prices, G8 Summitt, and Border Patrol.”Now”, if Paris was caught on camera standing at the gas pumps and paying for our gas then driving Bush herself to the G8 Summit ,and while on the way volunteering to go to Iraq and doing some real time ,not before stopping off at the local Mexico Bording and beating a few off with a stick. Now that would be “Real News”.

I think the media and the people who follow Peris should really get a life! Your following a waste of a life, that’s to bad I feel sorry for Peris but she should do her time she got off very easy “45 day’s” any of us would of resieved 1 to 3 “YEARS” in “PRISION” not jail where she is. Besides her body need’s a rest I’m sure. And the way she treat’s people on the simple life, no respect for any one that’s poor. TO GET RESPECT YOU HAVE TO SHOW RESPECT, EVEN IF YOU DON’T CARE OR LIKE THEM!

I hope the best for Paris and as a privledged(not that privledged)spoiled young person who has now turned 40 and still has trouble following rules because my father bought my way out of things and my loving family enabled the hell out of me I think I speak from experience when I say. If someone, Paris herself even doesn’t get her some real therapy and teach her boundaries view-switching etc. etc. she will end up just like me. a roaring drug addict, convicted felon and woman still struggling with maturity (even though I have 3 children of my own), low self esteem from years of saying and doing anything I wanted. 12 step program Paris! You can stll party.

It is soo refreshing to see someone who unlike everyone else is actually giving this girl the benefit of the doubt, We must remeber she is very young, hasn’t really “lived” much outside her world, and when it comes down to it , Yes she broke the law , Is she a hardened criminal? NO! What surprises me is why people hate her so much , that sadens me it’s almost as if everyone is happy and jumping for joy to see her behind bars and suffering, that’s hate ! You can dislike someones actions , choices , and even lifestyle but HATE that’s a strong emotion.

I am reading what some of you “goody-goody two shoes” are writing about Paris, some of you people are still writing Hateful messages, does it make you proud of yourself to put your two cents in with your uneducated hateful remarks. Sure, people are going to read them and some are even going to agree with you, and that will be people of your caliber that wish her ill feelings. But intelligent people will think and write differently about “Paris Hilton”.
Like I said before, those who have not sinned and are free fom law breaking, drugs, sinning against small childen, rape, adultry or any other crime not mentioned, can cast the first stone. I don’t think you are out there. Jesus knows who you are and that is what is important, if you believe, and it doesn’t appear like some of you do.
Leave Paris alone and clean up your own houses. We have more important issues to think about. Like this uncalled for “War” and the young men and women that are dying for, (I hope for our protection).
It is time to quit writing and talking about the Hilton’s.. Nannymum

PARIS JUST LOVES ALL THIS ATTENTION AND MAKES MONEY OUT OF THIS. MAYBE SHE MIGHT CHANGE HER WAYS IN LIFE TIME WILL TELL. ITS JUST SO SAD. SO MANY PEOPLE HATE HER AND I CAN UNSTAND THAT. OTHER PEOPLE WITH DUI ALSO HAD TO DO THEIR TIME I KNOW I DID SO ITS SO UNFAIR FOR ALL THIS CELEBRITIES TO GETTING AWAY WITH THINGS. THESE YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE MEDIA ARE SCARY.

I think if Paris hilton did the crime ,she should do the time. That’s the only way she’s going to learn what she’s doing isn’t right. Her parents and the media need to stop babying her up. She’s not a child anymore. She needs to take responsiability for her actions.
