After a devastating breakup, I fell into a deep, unrelenting depression that consumed me in whole. I attempted suicide twice, but was never able to go through with it. I entered therapy and was put on medication, I was feeling a bit better but asked the man who I had been dating to come to some therapy sessions with me. He said that he would help in any way he could. I gave him William Styron’s book Borchard mentions and he told me he thought Styron was being theatrical, overly dramatic. Not only was that one of the least compassionate statements ever made, it was simply ignorant. It’s a terrible fact that only those who have known depression can understand the intense, all-consuming pain of the disease. And, yes, it is a pain worse than any physical pain. As one description put it, “[depression] is the aloneness within us made manifest.” To me, it is the most accurate description of the malady there is and something that all those who have never been touched by depression can hopefully relate to.
