There are two kinds of reality shows: One where the contestants have to have some kind of talent or skill (“Top Chef,” “Project Runway,” “American Idol”), and one where participants are just chosen based on looks or personality (“The Real World,” “America’s Next Top Model”). CBS’s “Big Brother” is obviously in the latter category. This summer’s crop of contestants are a mostly useless, annoying bunch of numbskulls desperate to be on TV.
One contestant, Amber, has already scored a place on my hate list for spending approximately 21 hours out of the day crying. (About what, I have yet to figure out.)
Amber was in rare form last night and devoted part of her three non-crying hours to something even more obnoxious: Jewish stereotypes. Amber was talking to another player, Jameka, and made comments about how she “can tell” a Jewish person by their last name, and how Jews “are all selfish.” Watch the footage on YouTube here.
Jameka, who seemed to be as stunned as the rest of us at home but thankfully had more tact, suggested that maybe Amber should stay away from sweeping generalizations. [In my mind, Jameka then added, "For example, what if I said all people named Amber were whiny, bratty, entitled little snots--just because you are?"]
Hey, Amber? My last name is Marcus. In case you weren’t sure, it’s short for Marcudirtyjewovitz. Hope I helped clear that up for you.

I’m going to throw a bit of support behind Top Model. Yes, the point is to look pretty, but in this case, “beauty” is a skill. More than looks, they have to walk run-ways, take interesting photos, have interviewing skills and be knowledgeable about fashion designers and looks. It may sound really wishy-washy, I know, but the show is one of my favorites on television; you’d be surprised how common it is for a woman of extreme physical beauty to not know how to hold herself in front of a camera, be unable to form an intelligent response when meeting with big wigs or have a runway walk that makes them look like a robot. Modeling does take a definite amount of skill — much more than I realized before I started to watch the show.
By the way, I love your blog!

People who get offended tend to have two options when it comes to their entertainment choices.
Then can choose something else to watch or they can choose to express to the world how outraged they are hoping it will cause others to be as outraged while everyone secretly cannot wait until the next episode.

Here here, Jaclyn. I second your motion that Top Model is about skilled contestants and not just looks or personality. The post was great…but I have to agree that lumping Top Model in with Big Brother is a mistake.

i just have to say i hate all reality shows i just don’t get the whole concept of keeping up with them why do we care? i honestly couldn’t give a crap about any supermodel or whatever status they represent, they’re all people like us it doesnt make them any more special or interesting.

I’m not sure what the problem is with the last-name comment. If you’re last name is O’Neil, chances are you’re of Irish heritage. MacDonald, Scottish. Rodriguez, Latino(a). And if someone’s last name is something like Rosenbaum or Goldberg, chances are they’re Jewish. So what?

hi everyone one…
i like some of the reality shows, as a christian we’re not suppose to judge anyone, however i feel that those on big brother that claim they are christian and talk the way they do need alot of prayers as they are not setting an example of what a christian should me, with saying that i also know that no one is perfect and we all fall short one time or another..

Why would anyone watch these types of shows. Find something to do in your own life so you don’t have time to waste on such nonsense. I find that the harder I work to improve myself, the less I need to run others down and watch shows where it’s obvious the people are the dregs of society…shows that try to get trailer park residents to fight or in this case, showcases morons. I don’t have time for it. I don’t need to “peak” in on their lives like a peeping Tom in the hopes of making myself feel superior. Shows like that are for people who have too much time on their hands to sit around.

Larry, the comment about “Shows like that are for people who have too much time on thier hands to sit around.” Is IN MY OPINION ONLY~~a blanket comment, as both my husband & I are both pyhsically disabled, and so what if we enjoy watching SOME reality shows! We are of meager means, and no we dont have a satelite dish, nor cable t.v., just an old pitiful pair of well worn rabbit ear t.v. attenas, and only can get in 1 channel clear enough to watch t.v. on. We find Big Brother entertaining, shocking, and interesting. It takes our minds off of our disabilities for a while and we get to laugh, as well a discuss some of the craziness of the Big Brother houseguests…and of the flat out stupid, mean & degrading remarks that “WAAAAAAmber” (Amber…nicknamed by alot of viewers because of her constant whining & crying on the show). Here she 1) Bragged to another houseguest she thought she wanted all to herself (a male houseguest) that she was a nympho 2) Admitted to another house guest on the show that she had been a drug addict up until recently. 3) She ONLY got religion when she seen she was losing in the game, and then & only then did she decide she needed to turn to God to pray….. not for forgiveness over the cruel & mean spirited comment about a fellow house mate being Jewish, but instead she only asked that God help her win in the competitions to win the game. Maybe you, Larry think people like us waste our time watching reality shows, but I have learned alot about the human nature, and how phony some can be, no matter how THEY think they come across to the veiwers as nothing less than perfect and better than the other house guests! So, anyway Larry, before you make the comment that you did (that I quoted from your post), maybe YOU should try and understand that not everybody has as much ability to do as much as you most likely have.God Bless you!
