‘Fallen’: An Angel Extravaganza

posted by Donna Freitas | 4:05pm Monday August 6, 2007

fallentv_idol.jpgWhy is it that when someone spreads their wings on television (i.e., reveals that s/he is an angel), I find myself groaning or rolling my eyes in a way that I almost never do if a person, say, sprouts fangs? I am perfectly content with vampires and demons, yet angels provoke a sense of the corny that I can’t quite conquer. (The same was true for me when I reviewed TNT’s new series, “Saving Grace”. But I ended up enjoying that drama.)
I fought hard to overcome this prejudice as I followed ABC Family’s trilogy “Fallen” which aired Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night–six hours of heavy-on-the-winged-creatures television.

Last summer I saw “Fallen: The Beginning,” the first installment–and I was curious to see what became of Aaron Corbett, the “redeemer” nephilim (half human, half angel), whose birth and destiny was prophesied thousands of years before when Lucifer’s army of rebel angels fell to earth. When nephilim turn eighteen, the Powers–angels sent by God to destroy these “half-breed abominations”–take their revenge. Yet Aaron, who came into his right not only as a nephilim but also as the “redeemer” on his 18th birthday, is meant to redeem all the Fallen who remain on earth–waiting to return to heaven and God.
He is the Chosen One. (And what Buffy fan can resist a Chosen One?)
If you can overlook the low-fi special effects and some seriously stilted acting–though Hal Ozsan as Azazel, the right hand angel of the Light Bringer (a.k.a. Lucifer) not only injects much needed levity, but also a sexy charisma that others unfortunately can’t even come close to managing–”Fallen” has a lot to recommend it. It has the wonderful lore (In the beginning … etc.) told and retold each episode, and it is a fresh take on the relationship between humans and angels–especially the darker side of angels and why the war with God was originally fought.
So it’s a fun series. If only you can resist the urge to snicker every time our feathery friends suddenly spreads their wings. Catch reruns on ABC Family.

I myself, really enjoyed the series, they need to put more of this on tv instead of all the guns, drug, and nudity that is on there now. And as far as myself, YES I DO BELIEVE IN ANGELS, I ALSO BELIEVE IN “GOD”!!!!!!!!!

I so liked the series of Fallen. I think it would make a great weekly show. It is so nice to watch a program that is showing what good Angels do. Personally, I believe in God, therefore I believe in Angels because it is written He created them also!

Have to agree most heartedly that Hal Ozsan as Azazel made the miniseries so much more pleasurable to watch.
The buzz is that it will be a weekly show, and if so, wonder if Hal will make a comeback appearance. Wouldn’t be the same without him…that is, if he has time away from his band.
He is a strong actor and an incredible presence. Hope we get to see much, much more!

Really good show . Hope it becomes a weekly show. I agree it’s much better then the trash thats is on TV now . I believe in angels and God to.We all worry about the goings on around us but behind the sceans God is in control. The show may not be Biblically accurate but it does tell a good and interesting story to maybe get people thinking. (I gotta read this Bible story and check it out.) Sounds really interesting and mystical and exciting.) Well the Bible is mystical and exciting. If only most people would take a peek.

I really loved this show too. I couldn’t wait to see the next installments after watching it last year. I believe in angels and God too. Their existance and purposes is interesting. I hope they bring this show back in a series. I’d love to see Aaron reunited with his family!!

I was a bit disappointed at how it all played out. I watched it last year also and it intrigued me. It didn’t seem to tell the story as if they really believed it. Yes…Lucifer did take 1/3 of heaven’s angels with him when he fell. There is a passage in Genesis that says that the angels had relations with humans and the children were called Nephilim, and were giants. From there, the story evolves in I think the wrong direction. I have always felt that the fallen angels who left heaven with Lucifer are now his demons. (Maybe we can’t prove that) But I was willing to go with the story anyway. But when Lucifer shows up and ends up being the boy’s father…it lost me. I kept waiting for it to end up being a lie. Satan is a liar and the father of lies…so he would probably lie up a storm to the boy. And if he wrote the prophecy, why would anyone want to believe that and follow it? I think that would have made for a better ending. They gave Lucifer too much credit and messed up the ending as far as I was concerned. And then casting him into a pit….I’m sorry… but Satan is alive and well and living on planet Earth! I’m afraid if it becomes a series…they will just make up anything they want and make the fact of angels existing seem more like a cartoon/fantasy.

I at first litely watched this new show but as I got into it and became less critical it was refreshing to see that thye were struggling to save those who needed redeeming and heal those needing healing. A plus for producers. I would like to see this become a weekly series in the Fall. Something clean and positive to watch, who know it may rub off on the children today esp. the teenagers who appear to be only focusing on what they can get away with without getting caught and very much a lack of respect for themselves and their families and elders. Lost morals…

I actually enjoyed it. Genesis Chapter 6 does speak of this. Also Jude 1:6. I hope this show continues.

It’s such a shame that they diverted so far from the book series (The Fallen by Thomas E. Sniegoski) this mini-series was based on. I highly recommend that anyone interested in the basic idea of this story please read the original novels. I promise that you will not be disappointed. ~_^
