Video: Jon Voight in 'September Dawn'
Jon Voight Discusses "September Dawn" "September Dawn" tells a fictionalized version of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, in which a group of Mormons killed 120 innocent settlers who were passing through Utah in 1857. Voight plays Bishop Jacob Samuelson, the...
I love Jon Voight! He is an amazing actor and a true American!!! He supports our troops! GOD BLESS HIM!
I am an x mormon. I am very happy to see this horrendous tale come to light. Perfect timing. Thanks to Jon who braves the waters of this changing land to get this message out. Our 2008 elections are better for it. But, make no mistake. There is no one running for office, in a front runner status, including Romney and Clinton - who have the best interest of the people at heart. But, of one thing I am sure. This movie is a god send at the right time.
I plan to see this movie. Everyone is talking about it.
hmmm. Even tho' I was aware of this event, I never thought too much about it as violence was such a prevalent factor while the "west" was being settled. It was rough "out there". First "Big Love" on HBO, and now this film. Someone wants mainstream America to "know" about Mormons. It feels a little uncomfortable, but I will go see the film (wathcing "Big Love" remains a guilty pleasure!).
Personally.........
I nver cease to be AMAZED at how "organizations" want opinions
"couched/or stated".I doesn't matter what people "think, believe, or
desire to express.........it must be said "your way !!"
"hereit is"....this is "purr-fect LIBERAL-RESPONSE-TIMING" to raise
DOUBTS, HOIST NEGATIVITY, AND BEGIN AN AMBUSH OF "M-R's"bid for the
white house (gray/charcoal??). Personally I DEPLORE 99.9% OF THAT WHICH
EMINATES FROM THE "HOLLYWOOF MENTAL SLUM". THE DEGRADATION OF MENTAL CAPACITY
TO THINK AND BEHAVE MORALLY, HAS BEEN TRANSPLANTED FROM SODOM&GOMORAH
TO THAT GEOGRAPHICAL AREA IN THE (OTHERWISE) SOVREIGN "STATELESSNESS"
OF CALIFORNIA.......A POX ON THE FACE OF THIS OTHERWISE "GRATE-ed"
NATION.......
ANYTHING (SLANDEROUS for a buckeroo ???).
PURPOSE ? OBJECTIVE ? MESSAGE ?
AS OF YET, i AM NOT A SUPPORTER OF ROMNEY.......I AM EVEN LESS OF A SUPPORTER OF THIS "SUPPOSEDLY GUILELESS" ATTEMPT TO
SUDDENLY......"EDUCATE US ABOUT OUR HISTORICAL FOOT (PAW)
PRINTS !!!!!
JUDGEMENT WILL BE PARSED BY THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS PROMISED IT.
FURTHER SHAME ON ALL WHO PARTICIPATED;
WHATEVER THEIR (SUPPOSED) INTENT......
I TRUST THE FINANCIAL REWARDS (?) WILL MAINTAIN A MODICOM
OF COMFORT........WHEREVER "THEY" LAND.

Haven't seen it but heard it got 0 stars from a top national reviewer. Am Mormon and doubt that I'll see it, as I have studied it and know quite a bit about the real story and not this fictionalized one...
I am always suspect about anything that comes out of Hollywood, after all they are known for their Liberal leanings. Everything lately is Liberal Bent from there so my reply is "get bent" Iam more against them and I don't need their worthless Movies that are pure evil. Why would I want to pay for something that is for political reasons. The past is past and need only to beremembered for lessons to prevent reoccurence.Situation is no longer revelent.

What I have read and seen of this movie makes my heart sink, and makes my spirit extremely sad. I cann0ot believe what was being depicted by the movie. How this movie is trying to stir up problems between Mormons and immigrants. The Mormons were sent to various lands and encouraged immigration, not against it. Furthermore talking about bloodshed. Jesus Christ is the only atonement for our sins. Only He can forgive us. No matter if we shed our own blood, this does not prove us to go to Heaven. The only Redeemer is Jesus Christ, the only begotten, the Son of God. This sacrifice ended all other sacrifices, including animal sacrifice. I know these things to be true.
My great great grandfather said they ate the cows and the horses after MMM. We had to eat too you know. The white man took away everything we had. However the Mormons gave us guns to protect our selves.
I would like to know why it is that a movie would be made about a certain group of Mormon's who went off their rockers and killed a wagon train of people! Isn't there enough violence going on in the news! Once more whoever made the movie didn't even bother to tell all the facts or whole story- just the part that made the Mormon's look bad! Maybe they should take the time to look at what the "Mormon Church" is really about and what it stands for! If the perverted people who made the movie wanted to make a movie like that, then should have included the whole story (and a few real facts would have been nice too!) The members of Mormon church, had, had their homes and property stolen by groups of people who belonged to other religions and claimed to worship God themselves. They had, had their wifes and daughters raped and their friends and family members killed by those so called religious mobs of men in Missouri, Illinois and everywhere else the Mormons had lived, until their were driven clear out of civilization to live in the wastelands of Utah. I don't why those men decided to kill a whole wagon train of Missourians! No one can know what was in their minds! But I know this! Literally hundreds of Mormon men, women & children were killed by mobs in Missouri alone- many, many times more then were killed in the Mountain Meadows Massacre! Perhaps those men were taking revenge, no one will ever know, but to blame the Mormon Church as a whole is just plan vicious and wrong! The Mormon Church has proof that its leaders did not order the people killed at the Mountain Meadow Massacre! What those Mormon Men did was terribly wrong! IT WAS HORRIBLE! But it is just plain wrong and vicious to tell only one side of that story with the intent to make the Mormon Church look bad! Why did the movie not show the "Massacre of the Mormons at Hauns Mill"? Or the massacre of their leaders at Carthage Jail? The Mormon's as a whole are good God-fearing, peaceful people! Why do some people want to make them into something they are not and never have been?
While Mountain Meadows is a sad page in Mormon history...there is more to the story. Put this in the context of what the Mormons had just been through. Killed, raped, and forced out of their homes in the dead of winter - to watch their children, woman and men die along the trail. They had the temple that they so long sacrified for burned. They had the leader of their church murdered in cold blood. Their properties confiscated...and were not allowed to practice their religion in peace. Did the movie show that????
What the movie also did not depict is that they were being tautned by the passers by with more promised of being killed. Now, I don't know if they had not taunted the Mormons as they passed by, if this would have changed the outcome. Maybe not, in light that the Mormons traveled so many miles to get away from persecution. Then when they think they are safe - along come persecutors. Perhaps the taunting the shouted promises of more violance to Mormons was just the fuel to ignite already burning embers.
The apostels even in Jesus time did not always react the way He wanted them too. A Roman guards ear was cut off, Jesus still healed His future jailor and persecutor. The Mormon church does not preach violence. But, we do believe in the right to protect your life.
It's easy for me to sit in my cozy house and wish they had not acted before they were acted on. But, I can't.
Also, what surprised me about Belief Net - is that they put an Anti-Mormon "ficticious film" up on the Latter Day Saint music spot. Do they put up a film trailer for DiVinci Code on the Catholic site? - how about an inflmatory anti-Muslim film? I was really surprised by this - I expected tolerance and fair play over here. How about putting up Journey from Navoo? Or the Work and the Glory? Please don't let prejudice and ignorance rule this site. The whole concept is wonderful, and it is tainted by putting the worst history rather than the best forward. At the very least - show both sides. And wonder - why didn't the Native American's kill the Mormon? Why did they like each other and help each other? They lived together in peace.
Jesus forgives us ALL. And loves us all. He is not a repector of persons.
It looks like a Modern day witch hunt going on out there for the modern day Mormons who are descendants from the perpatrators of the MMM . Very sad indeed. I'm not Mormon, but Mitt Romney has my vote.
I can not believe how a country founded on freedom of religion has let the persecution of mormons to continue and you don't see the aclu stepping in anywhere do you. This persecution is the reason I looked into the religion and a year later I was baptised a member of JESUS CHRIST of LATTER DAY SAINTS , with great pride I add my name to the list of ever growing LDS members word wide .T here is an average of 800 baptisms a day I what a wonderful thing .
I'm surprised by the number of mormon's who protest the movie, saying that the event is not depicted correctly. How does anyone know what exactly took place, except the people who WERE THERE? This is one persons view, let them speak their mind. It's allowed. If you don't want to watch it, don't. But keep in mind, the mormon church's history is not perfect. They are capable of violence, just as much as the next person. Being mormon does not make one perfect.
"September Dawn" may not be the greatest film ever made and it may have a lot of people upset, but there are still current day issues connected to this that may eventually have to be addressed.
1.) Brigham Young denied any involvement the the attack, yet John D. Lee (the REAL Bishop of Cedar City who orchestrated the event) was like a son to him. Yet President Young turned him in as the only guilty party who was the only person convicted and executed for the massacre. There are some of Lee's descendents who have never gotten over this. If there's one thing the LDS Church is good at is teaching unquestioning obedience. It's just unbelievable that John D. Lee acted under his own authority and without Young's blessing.
2.) There are many relatives/descendents of the victims who to this day would like to exhume the remains of their dead and give them a decent burial. Yet the monument dedicated to the disaster by no accident sits on LDS Church property and covers the victim's remains. The LDS Church has not allowed anyone to remove the bones. There is some dispute as to exactly how many people were on that wagon train and how many were children. Only 17 children were retrieved by the U.S. Army. Some say there might have been as many as 20 that were adopted into LDS homes. Without retrieving the remains and DNA testing, those relatives will never know exactly what happened to all the young survivors. Don't you think they deserve an accounting? We put a lot more effort into accounting for the victims of the World Trade Center disaster (Where there was little hope of finding much) than we have in accounting for the victims of the MMM, even when we KNOW remains exist. Go Figure!!! Just what is being covered up? If we're going to compare one terrorist event with another, let's be even-handed about it.
3.) There is no evidence that the massacred wagon train did or said anything to provoke the attack. Their only crime may have been that they were from the same part of the world as some of the LDS persecutors. They were also known to be one of the wealthiest wagon trains of the era. Witnesses attest to people wearing the victim's clothes and jewelry around Salt Lake City. When we read of Joseph Smith telling his followers to gain their inheritance from the gentiles (all non-LDS) what are we to make of this? Does this reframe our understanding of the tense relations between the LDS and the non LDS?
4.) It's hard to believe that the release of this movie wasn't timed to coincide with Mitt Romney's candidacy. He's in a bind: To appear to be a good conservative Republican, he must profess strong religious belief; yet when questioned about his beliefs, he's evasive. Perhaps it's because of the secret nature of the LDS faith that he can't publicly divulge much. I feel sorry for him. It undermines his credibility.
My family has been persecuted by the LDS church, the very religion my own family started. Kidnappings, assaults, theft, slander, trespassing, has all been made against my family in the White Mountains of AZ. All in the name of God and the name of the LDS church. A group of politically active people (police, judges, elected officials) have, in concert, done many illegal, unchristian, un-American things against me and my family. The LDS church is no less than a terrorist society started as an experiment to teach masonry to the masses. Apparently it has been successful thus far, in this day and age of the internet it amazes me as to how many people would believe in such a radical religion. My family has lost everything, houses, animals (slaughtered) automobiles, even family members to these so called "Danites" of the white mountains. I have sworn an oath that ALL Mormons/LDS are my enemy my childrens enemy and their childrens enemy, even my own family, aunts uncles and cousins as well.....
