Our Rosie Studying Kabbalah?

posted by Ellen Leventry | 2:46pm Tuesday September 18, 2007

RosieKabbalahSized.jpgApparently Rosie O’Donnell’s time on “The View” affected her more deeply than we knew. According to Perezhilton.com, the outspoken comedian joined Kabbalah queen and friend Madonna in the Holy Land for Rosh Hashana. Perez cites Kabbalah language-laced posts on O’Donnell’s site as possible indications that the former talk show host has converted to the trendy school of mystical Judaism.
In an email to Perez, she notes that she has “been studying the k word, since leaving my old show,” but there is “no need to convert” as Kabbalah is “not a religion.” Sure, O’Donnell and Madge have been friends since their “A League of Their Own Days,” but could all those arguments with Elisabeth really have lead Ro into the Kabbalah cabal? Who knew hosting “The View” could lead to such spiritual questioning? Should we now be on Whoopi watch?

Everyone could use a bit of “centering.” So could Rosie. Good for her. Maybe it will help her calm down.

Why should Rosie (or anyone) be put down for checking out a belief? If this makes Rosie happy, it’s good. If she finds out it isn’t for her, that’s not a problem either. Everyone is entitled to whatever belief system makes them happy….whether they are a celebrity or not.

Only if Ro is NOT using Kabbalah for publicity, and if she is a true “seeker,” will I believe she is on a “new path” of self-discovery and illumination. This woman’s mouth gets her in a LOT of trouble. Perhaps the Kabbalah will teach her some “humility….”

When you study the Kabbalah you are studying the esoteric occult knowledge of Judaism’s strange Gods. These are the gods that God had forbidden the Israelites to worship in Exodus 20:2-3. The devil is a liar and murder. There is no truth in the devil. He doesn’t care if he cons you into joining him and he will do his best to destroy you. Rosie has denounced Christianity and God. I believe that it was Chesterton who said, “When you don’t believe in God you will believe in anything.”

Joseph:
There is nothing sinister about Kabbalah. It sounds like a very interesting part of the Jewish faith.
If Rosie doesn’t believe in a god, why is she studing Kabbalah? Jews are believers in a divine being, AKA God. And what is wrong with her denouncing Christianity, as you put it? Denouncing Christianity is not synonymous with denouncing a belief in a god.

it’s unfortunate to see kabbalah treated as “trendy” and “used for publicity” when it’s been studied seriously for hundreds of years, even by isaac newton.
i think it’s perfectly reasonable to have mixed feelings about the celebrity embrace of “kabbalah,” as offered by the kabbalah centre.
painting the entire thing with this same brush, however, is entirely unfair. as for “true seekers,” i think there’s some merit to letting people seek privately.
if kabbalah has become a spectacle, i have to count the media as well as its audience as partially responsible for making it one, including every person that has commented on the subject without any knowledge of it or interest in it whatsoever.
