Kathy Griffin Vs. Christian Entertainers

It seems all I need to do to create a flood of comments here at Idol Chatter--something that make my editors very happy--is to post my thoughts on either (a) Michael Moore or (b) Kathy Griffin. It's the latter comedian...

As was wisely mentioned in the above article, all the pious Christians are doing is giving Kathy more publicity. She will benefit from it very well.

So keep those protests coming and add $$ to Kathy's coffers. Guess they didn't think of that as they are spending hard earned bucks $100,000...for ads etc. to say "bad Kathy!!"

The pious Christians have a right to say they were unhappy with her statement, but do they really think that what they do will change anything? Kathy Griffin has a right to say what she wants also, and will continue to do so. Pious ones don't have to listen....

Many of the over zealous Christians need to get a real life!

Her own comment was about all those articles, mentioning her name, and 'emmy winner', and as she says, "The rest just kind of blurs after that".

Really, for a comic whose stock in trade is shock, that kind of reaction is pure gold.

I mean, come on, is anyone protesting the type to have hired her before the comment?

So, it hasn't lost her any audience she had in the first place.

Its a good thing this is 2007 and not 1007 because the good people of god would be piling up sticks to start the big Kathy Griffin burning at the stake bonfire! Come on people. You were incensed that she said no one had less to do with this award than Jesus? Well, because she uses the "f" word quite frequently and she gossips, and admits that much of it may or may not be true, I would hope that the Saviour had nothing to do with her award. However, Jesus has a sense of humour, and getting incensed about someone "insulting" the Lord is pathetic. Do you think Kathy hurt his feelings? Come on, God has seen and heard a lot worse- He created all of us sinners, right? And, of course the Creator of the Universe has a sense of humour- just look at some of the animals in nature (the flamingo or the ostrich, for instance), or tele-evangelism, as one big joke at the expense of God (which He likely isn't laughing at that nonsense because people are actually harmed). Kathy Griffin only "harmed" you because you felt like being upset and now you are all going to gang up on a D-list commedian. If you truly bear the name of Jesus Christ, as Christians, then pick on someone your own size and take out an expensive add (that could have fed the poor and sheltered homeless families - greedy, self-absorbed, self-righteous bible thumpers) against Lucifer, of whoever that lady is that keeps appearing on tree trunks and bathroom windows that only the uneducated, hopeless, or desperate can see.

Ms. Griffin is a comedienne, and they are expected to be a bit unorthodox and bit off colour; and I don't think she hurt God any more than Sinead O'Connor did by tearing up a photo of the pope, in an effort to call attention to child molestations of children by priests in Ireland- a fact that was missed and children continued to be molested- because the good Catholics and Christians who created such an uproar about how they were offended that she tore up a photograph (a photo!) on TV that the real issue and meaning behind the act was completely ignored. Shame on those who whine about inconsequential things in the face of eternity and of what is really important and what is not.

I wish every God-fearing protester could read this and perhaps have a different view of the situation, and maybe they will behave more like the Master and turn the other cheek, be meek and mild, pray for those who persecute you and say all manner of ill against you, love your enemies..... One of your favorite things to ask yourself is, "What would Jesus do"? Well, after the awards show He would likely laugh and say, "She is right, I had nothing to do with her show. I keep telling her to ease up on that "f" word but, as I say, the spirit is willing but the flesh is week. All of you fall short of me." Oh, come on!!! Lighten up, Christ Lives and He will return to Rein and in the end Satan will be bound and sent to hell.... so, lighten up on Kathy Griffin.

Kathy Griffin is very funny. Beliefnet is a thoughtful comment site about religious beliefs. Both have their own bias, and don't necessarily belong to the same "sides" in these arguements. The whole conflict is rather stupid, and doesn't help make Christians appear any more intelligent or enlightened. If you don't agree with her statements, or dislike her stand on anything, stop listening to her and mentioning her. The continued coverage of this incident is giving more attention to it than it deserves.

As to those condemning Kathy, lighten up! Shes a "comedienne" (politically incorrect, I know). She says and does things to shock and incite. Let it go!!

Beliefnet -- Keep the site going.

Just think, If Rome had minded their own business then who would have ever heard of Jesus Christ. No you see Christians and I am one of them are not high and mighty, nor do we go around putting others down that first don't draw first blood. Although we have been taught to turn the other cheek. But if Real Christians continue to just turn the other cheek then the first commenter will wonder when we will "get a life". So you know what, why can't we go back to what, I know my parents taught me. Sticks and Stone may break our bones but "WORDS" will never hurt us. Let's stop teaching our kids that when someone calls you a nigger, kike, fatass, shithead, dummy, honky, jewboy, idiot, and need I go on? that their lives are at stake because of this. You see, if Kathy had delivered that comedy routine in Jerusalem some 2000 years ago, Jesus might have actually laughed. No, not just Christians need to get a life, everyone today in society needs to get one. If we spent less time worrying about statements from people who we think hate us and just laugh, we'd be a lot better off. And I just know that the first commenter will sit and stew about my response but I don't care I wish him/her a good day.

I hope this is the last place I will have to say this. Ms. Griffin's comment's intent was the very opposite of the way it has been taken. Yes, she says things in a raucous way. And her "chortling with glee" was done in this vein as well - but it apparently went over most viewers' heads. By her statement, she was actually lampooning the way other winners of awards TRIVIALIZe God & Jesus by thanking them for their help in winning whatever, not to mention exposing their giant egos that they think their careers have been blessed by God. Does no one get this? She took a shot at people who treat Jesus as though He's their publicist & manager. There are truly more important things for God to pay attention to than some idiot's showbiz or athletic career. So what are they saying? That God hates their opponents or the other nominees that didn't win??? No one seems to see the absurdity of this. I've been complaining about this for years, and I'm glad that Kathy finally said it in public. And I AM a churchgoing Christian who doesn't like Jesus being disrespected in public. This was the OPPOSITE, people - please try to catch up.

I have to add: To echo another post, the TRUE obscenity here is spending that amount of money, and time and energy rallying support, to protest a comedienne's remark. Put that money to use caring for the poor, the homeless, the victimized; rally to provide mental health care and financial support for our returning wounded troops and others left out in the cold by caring conservatives.
Remember what Jesus said to the self-righteous and self-congratulatory: "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

I don't see a mention of "When you didn't spend 100,000 clams on an ad to slam an actor, that hurt - you should have spent it that way instead of caring for the sick, imprisoned, hungry, yada yada yada."

I agree with Honora's comments and I must say if I had seen Ms. Griffin's remarks, I would have taken them in the same way -- as a comment on the countless celebrities who give a lot of public lip service to their religions. We have come to the point where even charity events have become big public "see how generous I am" stunts. I seem to recall the saying ... "the first shall be last and the last shall be first." Proclamations of one's own religiosity just don't seem very humble to me.

Amen, amen!

Why a religion that comprises a huge population in our country has such a thin skin is a mystery beyond me. Christians magically manage to combine victimhood with being a serious lobby in D.C. They'd be silly and funny if they weren't clearly so dangerous.
I cross my fingers and hope the men and women who wield power in our culture will resist this kind of Christianity that would -- if allowed/encouraged -- do far more harm than good. And may Ms. Griffin inspire more entertainers to poke fun at these people so that they're merely funny (just like everybody else) and not dangerous.

I think that Kathy Griffins comment was just wrong. Christians have to stand up for what is right!! And what she did wasn't.
It has already gotten to the point that "G--Damn" is allowed on the networks and Bibles aren't allowed in the schools. What is next...feeding the christains to the lions?
People have the right to free speech but people are trying to shut the christians up, is that fair?

Joy:

What makes Christians RIGHT? Does that mean everyone who isn't a Christian is wrong?

Yes, people have the right to free speech....thus Kathy G. has that right also. Why was what she said wrong? Just because you didn't like what she said? You're allowed to say that, just as she is allowed to say what she wanted to. No one is forcing you to listen to her or the networks that have allow GD on them. There is an off button on the television and radio.

And you're also right that bibles aren't allowed in PUBLIC schools...it's called separation of church and state, thus NO BIBLES in public schools. Want bibles in school? ....there are plenty of Christian schools and Catholic schools that have them.

No one is trying to shut up the Christians...just remind them they don't get to run the country as they would like to. This isn't a Christian nation (fortunately)as much as some would like to make it one. Different religions are a good thing in the United States, with none being a monopoly. No religion should ever "run" this country.

If someone's that upset about what Kathy Griffin said, then she's got more influence on people than she possibly realizes.

Instead of reacting so hard to what she said, make it clear you don't approve by ignoring her. Ignore her long enough and she'll fade back into obscurity.

Yes, everyone has the right to voice their opinions. My problem is this writer said "I am forced now to backpedal a little bit on my reaction." I think this writer is writing for the wrong site. This is Beliefnet. Inspiration, spirituality, faith. Why should he backpedal? And yes, I signed the petition.

Listen us Christians have or should have had enough of the people saying bad things about God or Jesus Christ. You hardly evey heard Gods name being used, but today the actors say it all of the time. They don't realize that children of all ages hear this filth. I'm in my 50's & can tell you that I sure don't like it. Can any actor or actress say that they are a Christian & be truthful with it? God know what they say on & off TV. I've got to where I try not to watch the movies any more unless I know that the nasty talking is not in it. You men & woman you'd better understand that God is watching ebery move you make. I can't judge, but I do pray for you & your souls. I'm just a sinner that is trying to live for my Lord, how about YOU. Can you be TRUTHFUL.
