Christmas is Canceled: Thus Spake Madonna

Monday December 17, 2007

Categories: Celebrities

In case you haven't heard, there'll be no Christmas this year. At least not in the drafty English castle where Guy Ritchie and Madonna make their somewhat religiously confusing home. The adults are not exchanging presents, and the kids will get three presents each, but apparently no fatty or sugary food, or turkey, because Madge has issues with poultry slaughtering practices.

And what about the religious observances? Will they have a crèche? What about decorations? Or a meaningful discussion of their religious beliefs and what impact the season and its celebrations have? To recap, Madonna still claims to believe in Jesus, and is raising her children within the rules of what this article calls a "quasi-religion." Lourdes is 11, so we'll see if the Ritchie family commemorates her bat mitzvah. Maybe then we’ll understand. But probably not.

Confused by the Complaint

I don't see the problem here. Adults not exchanging gifts could be an attempt at focusing on the true meaning of Christmas and moving away from the comercialism. Three gifts for the children is something we and a large group of friends are doing. We get that from the three gifts from the wisemen to baby Jesus, again moving away from the comercialism of Christmas. We won't be doing sugary or fatty foods either... we never do. There are lots of healthier alternatives to go into stockings that the children will enjoy. (at least those who haven't been spoiled by overconsumption of such junk) Finally, I see no problem with choosing an alternative menue if an item doesn't sit well with a family member for whatever reason. Honestly, a reason such as being concerned for the well being and humane treatment of animals seems hard to critisize.
The beliefs of Madona and family may well be outside of conventional Christianity and subject to critisism, but the headline of this article was misleading. Christmas is just being celebrated a little differently in this household.

How thankful I am to be an annonymous member of society whose every decision meets with public scrutiny! If the madonna/Ritche household weren't under such close and constant observation, this would have remained what it should have; a joint decision on about parenting the children of a mulri-faith household. thanks to "complaint for expounding on the three gifts symbolism; I actually find that to be touching.
