Cruise’s Marriage To Katie Not His First Choice?

posted by Kris Rasmussen | 1:05pm Wednesday March 12, 2008

katie_tompicforIC.jpgCertainly one of the tenets of my day-to-day spiritual walk is the firm belief that whatever is done in darkness will eventually come to light. So while I am not into celebrity gossiping or tabloid-mongering, I had to smile for just a moment when I read on Page Six of the New York Post the other day that Tom Cruise had the Church of Scientology set up what amounted to a casting call to find Tom’s new wife. And, believe it or not, Katie Holmes was not exactly a frontrunner in the process. According to a new tell-all by a former Scientologist, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, and Scarlett Johansson were on the short list of potential spouses and Katie was brought into the mix only after they showed no interest.

I might have completely dismissed this story except for the fact that I remember a few years ago at the height of Tom Cruise’s couch jumping days that two well-established Hollywood writers who are friends of mine would call me and snicker about TomKat. It seemed that the story around their agents’ water coolers were full of details about Tom and his Scientology buddies conducting a bizarre search for a new wife and that Jennifer, Scarlett, and Jessica were at the top of the list. And when I say the casting call was supposedly bizarre, I mean there is no way I could get away with printing some of the alleged details here at Idol Chatter .
With rumors flying about Katie being pregnant again, I do wonder about the timing of this news story. Could it be that TomKat is leaking such gossip because any publicity is good publicity? Or is it, as I want to believe, a case of Scientology’s dirty little secrets continuing to be exposed as more and more defectors come forward and tell the truth?

If I remember correctly, Lindsay Lohan and/or Joss Stone was in that group too. I remember reading about Scarlett and Joss speceifically. One story stated Scarlett went with him to the Scientology center and got freaked out and left early.

Some people say it’s a coverup because he’s still in the closet.

They make a lovely couple, she’s a fashionista of renown, and they have a beautiful baby girl. I think there’s just a touch of jealousy here, don’t you??!!

everyone “inside” knows this is a case of what was called in the old days a “beard,” or Katie providing cover for Tom’s actual preferences. The only shame is that being gay is still such a career killer for a leading man that he has to resort to such chicanery. There used to be a term “twilight tandem,” meaning a couple where both were gay & providing each other cover. Charles Laughton & Elsa Lanchester were such a couple. The real nasty part is the Church of Scientology’s involvement; otherwise it would be a pretty straightforward quid pro quo: you provide me cover & progeny, I provide you with financial support beyond your wildest dreams. Not a bad trade-off – your whole life doesn’t have to revolve around sex.

She actually wasn’t a fashionista until she got with Tom Cruise. Pre-Cruise she was pretty and plain, a very simple and understated young woman that though she made the cover of In Style magazine–while doing nothing particularly profound–her own personal style left much to be desired. But I believe it is her relationship with him the molded her into what we see right now. We should not be fooled, but I guess also we shouldn’t be so concerned either.

All comments considered the bottom line is:
There is a Precious child involved here.
Katie is a Precious human being by all accounts.
Tom is seasoned & dominating in most sitiuations I have seen.
I do not feel happy about the situation, personally.
But very bottom line: It is not our place to intercede or judge.

I can across your blog about Tom Cruise when I was looking for something else. I think what you wrote is intriguing and it talks about things that I’ve heard others wonder about TC. There is a movie star in India named Shah Rukh Khan who also is rumored to be in such an arranged marriage because of his stature as a very well known movie star in Asia. It is a shame IMO that in the 21st century people still have to hide being homosexual because of the tremendous fear involved in being yourself if you are in a profession such as being a movie actor like these leading “romantic” men are. What they do in their private lives should not be anyone’s business and it shouldn’t be something that would harm or destroy their careers. Let people be who they are as long as they are not hurting anyone. Knowing Tom Cruise or Shahrukh Khan is really gay would not at all affect me believing them in a romantic movie role with a woman. They are ACTORS after all and I think both do a good job in the romantic roles no matter what they really think of women sexually.
