Miley Beware

posted by nsymmonds | 3:13pm Tuesday April 29, 2008

MileyCyruspicforidolchatter.jpgOn February 9th, Disney superstar Miley Cyrus and her “achy breaky” father Billy Ray Cyrus participated in a “relaxed family event” photo shoot for Vanity Fair’s June issue. While Cyrus isn’t on the cover, her scantily clad photo—where she is looking over her shoulder, bare-backed and covering herself with a sheet—has received much coverage and has been the source of much discontent for Vanity Fair, Cyrus and her fans.
Cyrus has released a statement saying she is embarrassed; photographer, Annie Leibowitz has apologized that the photo was misinterpreted; Disney has suggested that the photo was manipulated and not so much has been heard from her parents. Strange statements aside, I am bothered by what seems like the media’s refusal to respect young stars for who they are instead of paving the way to their possible dysfunction.

Case in point, Miley Cyrus. Thus far in her career she has walked the straight and narrow road. Her show is the Disney Channel’s top-rated series, her concerts are sold out and command top-dollar, she appears on the red carpet as a fresh-faced teenage girl living out her dreams just as her fans would love to live out theirs and then she seals the deal by telling the world that she thanks Jesus Christ her Savior for all that she has. She is who the media has been looking for since the downfall of Britney Spears. But now that she has fallen into the magazine photo shoot/interview circuit, she is even more susceptible to be molded into what they want her to be rather than what she is.
This is how Cyrus’ over share about her favorite show, “Sex and the City” can end up as feature fodder–and an odd reflection of her character–and how one can persuade her to get undressed for a shoot under the guise of art. Given all of this, the blame can’t be put on Cyrus as much as it can be put on editors and writers looking for a juicy story and some hot pictures to gain viral status on the web over helping a young girl maintain a pure, untainted image. A 15-year-old girl in a quasi-nude photograph is what I consider exploitation. You mean to tell me she couldn’t be photographed with clothes on–for every page of the spread? With no other adult—including her parents—willing to stand up and say that she is much too young to take such a photo I don’t think I can call it anything else but exploitation.
You could also call it naiveté because for anyone to believe that this photo wouldn’t be construed as suggestive and exploitative is just ridiculous. You don’t leave a 15-year-old girl to her own devices at a shoot with a photographer who has taken some of her most amazing photos when her subjects have been nearly or just plain nude. There is just something wrong with people who’d rather teenage girls be scantily-clad and suggestive rather than modest.
We should be protecting the integrity of our young girls knowing that there are so many things out there created to tear them down. Miley Cyrus has years to make a well-educated decision about taking these kinds of pictures—particularly when she doesn’t have young girls on the edge of their seats watching her every move. At 15, the media and her own focus for her coverage should be to continue to be a beacon of light in an industry that is waiting for her to stoop to the level of her predecessors. At this point, all we can do is pray that Miley, her family, and her handlers will use foresight and discernment when dealing with the media beast.

Ahhhhhh such a tempest in a teapot! Is anyone surprised that Miley has a back? or that she is a beautiful? Of course not.
Was she using drugs? Was she recklessly driving? Was she throwing a temper tantrum and shaving her head? Was she slipping out of rehab? Was she endangering a child? Was she doing anything really wrong? Of course not!
Whether it’s Brooke Shields or Jody Foster young women celebrities seem to grow up too fast. Short of death they all grow up. We can only hope they are as grounded as Miley Cyrus. And while her “wardrobe malfunction” might disturb you try to keep it all in perspective. It was just her back….. nothing you wouldn’t see on beaches this summer.
And parents consider using this as an opportunity to teach your children that making mistakes is a part of life and learning successful.

Why would any parent allow photos of there daughter be taken. If they were on the set with her while photos were being taken than they should not of allowed them to take the one with her back being exsposed. The one with Miley and her dad well just look at it. That looks more like a photo that her mom and dad should of been in. Does not look like a father and daughter photo. I think it is the parents fault these photos were taken I also blame the lady that took the photos A BIG SHAME ON YOU.

I’m FAR more disturbed/disgusted by the photo of Miley with her father. While I don’t like the one of her topless (and let’s face it, she was topless, and that’s what we’re all supposed to think about, I’m far more shocked at the photo where she’s draped across her Dad, looking all too wordly and suggestive.
My four-year-old stepdaughter loves Miley/Hannah Montana. What kind of image does she get now?? That it’s ok to take your clothes off, as long as you think of it as “artistic,” and it’s fine to be suggestive with your father. . .it’s just plain creepy! Where on earth were her parents when this was done? If they were watching and approving, I’d say they have some serious issues of their own.

personally;i think Miley Cyrus ‘ concerts are way over priced ;;;normal kids her age that might love her music;could never afford her ticket prices and I think that in itself is disgusting;;and as far as her sexy photo and with her parents on-site of the shoot; they all should be ashamed ;that 15 year old already is going to have problems growing up sooner then she should without having her parents approve of that photo; she’s already cashing in more than her share of profits from the 15 year olds who can afford a ticket to her shows;;lets get with reality here;and cater to the fans that made her popular. My granddaughter is 15 and can’t stand Miley Cyrus; cause she gives the impression that she is above the rest of the teens in her actions and the prices they want for her;;;she is not God after all.

At the time of the shoot, I doubt that Miley ever considered the ramifications of the photo. I think she probably was feeling the way we tend to make so many young girls feel…grown up. It’s just another example of the backlash of pushing our kids to grow up too fast. We so desperately need to trust others, but trusting a photographer who makes money in a competitive media blitz is a bad choice for our children.

I believe she might have said that she didn’t mean to do it. Or she may have apologized for a misinterpreted Annie Leibovitz artistic shoot of Girl Gone Wild. But clearly her deft handlers, publicists and other spinmeisters have shifted to overdrive to protect and maximize the equity value of Miley Cyrus Incorporated (MCI).
This is a classic study of taking a calculated risk and managing its effects. There is no damage control here. Ms. Cyrus and her management team made a calculated assessment and decided it was time to reposition the MCI brand.
At 15 years of age, Ms. Cyrus had a limited shelf life as the much beloved Hannah Montana. As she grew and matured into young adulthood her ability and believability of portraying a challenged 8th grader was straining credulity and the character was living on borrowed time. So her managers made the decision to begin transitioning the product to parallel the maturation of the demographic of her target market. Yes her fans will soon be putting away their Hannah Montana lunch boxes, backpacks and dress up dolls. As they grow and require trainer bras, tampons and Clearasil she might as well continue as chief pitchman for these products as well.
In TV news coverage of this shocking incident, photos of Ms. Cyrus sitting on the lap of her strong protective father Billy Ray preceded the Annie Leibovitz shots. I felt the pain of his achy breaky heart as he symbolically gave his daughter away to an adoring public. Clearly Ms. Cyrus has fully entered the public domain of commoditization and she is now wedded to the fickle fancy of consumer markets. I believe Puff Daddy, Tommy Hilfiger and The Rockstar Formally Known as Prince also sold their names as a consumer market brand and have ever since continue a quest to discover who they truly are.
Unlike Jerry Mathers who was unable to transition his career from childhood star, the management team at MCI has no intention of mismanaging this valuable corporate brand. They see an opportunity. Ms. Cyrus has established a large brand following within a market demographic of young girls who will be consumers of products for the next 70 years. MCI is moving with her market and her product life cycle is staggering. When MCI goes public, her market cap will be impressive. As Ms. Cyrus’s target market enters retirement she’ll be well positioned to sell them an extensive line of rocking chairs to lull her fan’s to a well deserved sleep.

First off…Anybobdy making judgements…look at reality for a minute….Girls, not just celebreties, are forced to grow up faster.
Children at 6 years old are stareting to use makeup, 14 year olds are having sex(whether we like it or not) and all we can do is look to the next “it girl” who seems the purest to save our children. Does anyone see the exploitation here? Miley is going to be 16, she cannot stay Hanna Montana forever, just like Spears could not stay a mouseketeer nor could Hillary Duff stay as Lizzy McGuire…They have to grow up and change. Whatever those changes are will be their decisions good or bad. Miley’s break from her path wasn’t evil or corrupt. But I do agree as a mom, and someone not comfortable with her body…It’s bold, and It is still in the realm of good taste (debate between porn and art) This isn’t soft porn…but just because I couldn’t see my daughter doing this at age 15, It does not mean the parents are wrong…especially if they are there…I think they would handle it if she really was exploited…children get older, and are faced with more choices…we are helpers to our children, not wardens…

I for one think it’s a shame how critical I see everyone being in these comments. Of all of these people who responded to this artical about Miley, have they been mistake free with raising their children and grandchildren? Have they been perfect examples of Christ them selves in their own lives? Are they working so hard on improving their walk with the Lord that they don’t have time to be throwing stones at others? I think NOT. No one is perfect except for our Lord and Savior Jesus. There is life and death, blessings and cursings in the power of your tounge (your words) and what goes round comes round so the best thing all y’all could do with YOUR WORDS is pray for Miley and the entire Cyrus family. Pray for the same things you would want for you and yours. The above comments from critical unloving Christians is the very reason why we have so many churches closing every year to never re-open. It’s part of why the Church is failing this Nation as a whole. Another thing how many pg-13 or R-movies, bad music and vedios games do you allow your children to watch, play and listen too because you’re to lazy to keep up with it or you don’t see anything wrong with it? All of those things steal, kill, mame, pervert and destroy our childrens innocence, compassion, sensitivity, and ability to love others. Where is the CHRIST LOVE folks? Our job is to pray for all the Saints see Ephasians 6. It’s like mama always said say something good or hush! In my household I’m praying for God to Bless the Cyrus family.

What ever happened to us as a community looking out for our kids ,when someone is hurting them or taking advantage of them we stepped in. What ever happened to the idea that our kids should be kids until they where 18years old .Why are there so many girls out there that think you should be sexy and do sexy things .Why is it that every show on any kids program channel talks about kissing , boyfriends ,fighting over boys and other inappropriate things such as these. Why can’t the shows have funny things and issues about self-esteem and doing good in school .I have been told that if shows would have those issues the kids would not watch them ,but I don’t believe that is true .If every kids show on every kids channel would all be on the same page as far as programing goes the kids would have no choice, it’s not like they aren’t ever going to watch T.V. and ofcourse the things that are for older kids such as mid-teenagers that be put on a channel just for that age group. With parents help in monitoring what their kids are watching that would return things to some what of an order.Example the porn movies have a specific channel and parents block those channels on their cable boxes same thing would apply to my idea.By doing so we can get our kids back to acting like kids and not thinking they are only cool if they put pictures of themselves nude or half nude every where and would not think having sex when they can’t even understand the effects that it has on them is cool. Finally I strongly believe that the overly stupid and pointless website MYSPACE.COM should be closed forever and never opened again or anything like it .It only supplies our kids with dangerous material ,ideas, and most of all it brings them in contact with all those sickos out there that look to harm kids.Iknow that some people might think I am to strict but in is day and age you have to be in order for your kids to trun out to be good people.

Why do we always have to resort to sex to sell magazines or movies? Why can’t Miley, as a 15 year old, just be photographed fully clothed and still sell magazines? Why was she draped over her dad in a pose that was more “girlfriend” than “daughter”? Everything these days has to be about sex, sex, sex.

We have enough negative garbage for our children to see without seeing this. I would love to ask Miley how she thinks God would react to her dressing like this. This just proves that people need to quit looking up to people who always seem to fail and put your faith in God. He will not fail you.

Ok let’s say that everyone who get’s this email from beliefnet has never in their lives been to a beach. Let’s say they have never been to a motel/hotel with a pool. Let’s say they’ve never been to Disney World or any other theme park with water parks. That means just about everyone who see’s this picture, which I have seen has never seen the bare shoulders of a 3 yr old, an 8 yr old, a 15 yr old or an 80 year old and every age in between. This is what makes me mad. You see someone looks at a situation where they can make themselves a bigger audience. See, beliefnet wouldn’t have me reading or commenting or others doing the same without making a non story into one. We here in America thrive on items that if weren’t covered would just go away, but then the people covering their supposed shocking news wouldn’t be able to make any money. So who’s the bad guy here, Miley or Beliefnet?According to Beliefnet what she is doing is wrong, but if I get this right, if it’s not advertised, less people pay attention. So Beliefnet get’s this idea to advertise it and put their 2 cents in for what? To help Miley? No! To gain publicity, join the idiots on the talk show circuit, and make MONEY off of it. They could give two craps about Miley. I’m quite sure God has nothing bad to say about seeing the naked shoulders of anyone, after all He wasn’t fully dressed while hanging on the cross now was He? No, it’s just a kid following a dream and the only people who might make it sound bad are those who might already be pedifile’s and want everyone else to think it’s bad to take suspicion off of them….Just a thought….You go Miley and no I’m not a pedifile, just a parent with a real brain….by the way how many parents think that’s bad while they are smoking their pot?

It is very unfortunate that the picture was posed for, taken, and published. It is difficult for me to think anyone involved did not realize what was going on and it wasn’t meant to imply the obvious. Their business is providing the public with what sells and sex sell….nice girls with good behavior are not news worthy….we as the buying public are the only people who can change this. I will not be buying a Vanity Fair magazine ever again. If enough people say this is enough and talk the only language understood which is money it will make a difference. If an item is known to advertize in the magazine you should not buy it…if you want to make a statement….make it.

I just looked at the photo of Miley ( via Vanity Fair), I am a grown women, with a beautiful 15 year old niece and a beautiful 11 year old step daughter. I am a good christian woman that believes that God made us all.
My complaint is to you and all the other papers that are making such a huge deal out of this one photo. The more you rage the more Vanity Fair makes bank off of the very people that are against what they are selling.
Just Let It Go!!
Vanessa Hudgens (HSM I-II and soon III) we saw more nudity from her via the net. Where she sent her underware photos to Josh Bell. People stopped reporting on it and surprise it just went away.
If we stopped ranting about it, it will stop. We have alot more things to worry about than, what Miley is wearing. My greatest concern for my family, is the computer pediphiles that are roaming out in cyber space. For that we monitor our step daughter on what she watches and where she is allowed to go on the net.
My last item comes from my husband- Adam and Eve were naked in the garden. Jesus told the men that wanted to stone the adultries- He who is with out sin cast the first stone.
We (The Dreyers) dropped our stones long ago when we found Christ. And any one who casts stones are liars.

For current affairs, some of my sixth grade students brought an article in about the whole incident. This led to a discussion on who felt it was appropriate for a 15 year old to pose like this. Three boys raised their hands. When I asked if they’d let their own child pose or see a photo of a girl posed like that, one said he’d let his son see it but not his daughter. My point it that the media shapes thoughts and because of what the media has presented to date, most people find it acceptable for a girl to be displayed as a sex object. Sad.

It seems to me that if Miley Cyrus should have known that this whole thing was going to blow up on her. It is amazing to me that her dad did not stay with her throughout the shoot. Vanity Fair is out to make a buck at just about anyone’s expense. They could not be trusted to keep Miley’s best interests in the forefront of consideration. Then too, if Miley was put in a situation that SHE was not comfortable with she should have said so and walked off the set. She is getting older it does not mean she has to take off her clothes to get people’s attention! Taking off your clothes is getting to be really old. I think this is deplorable! The girl is 15 years old! Whether or not she’s a star or just a regular teen-age girl, she’s STILL A CHILD and I would think that VANITY FAIR or the photographer would be arrested for child exploitation!! I find it proposterous when an adult (the photographer, VANITY FAIR) can do something like this to a 15 year old child and “NOTHING” is said against “THEM” FOR “CHILD PORNOGRAPHY”, but they make the “CHILD” OUT TO BE TRASHY, WHORE, POSING IN THE NUDE! What has come of America, when we can’t protect our children from FILTHY MINDED PHOTOGRAPHERS PRAYING ON YOUNG, NIEVE, INNOCENT CHILDREN, JUST TO MAKE “MONEY OR A NAME FOR THEMSELVE?” “THEY” ARE THE ONES WHO SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES,AND HELD LEGALLY ACCOUNTABLE, NOT MILEY!!! I just hope & pray that Miley has learned from this & not do anything so stupid in the future! I HOPE SHE HAS LEARNED A GOOD LESSON, THAT YOU CAN’T TRUST “ANYONE BUT YOURSELF & GOD IN THIS WORLD!!!” In some cases, EVEN YOUR FAMILY will turn against you!! I’d like to know where Billy Ray was & why he left his daughter to the whims of a photographer? “HE” should have known how photographers are or can be!! If this photographer wasn’t acting on behalf of Vanity Fair, then he or she should be, at the least fired without pay from this job! The photographer had her posed (draped) over her father, and being that her dad is very youthful looking, the shots seemed inappropriate,
they looked more like they could be sweethearts, than father and daughter… I don’t believe Miley and her father were aware fo this at the time, but I’m sure the photogs were!
