A Red Sox Curse on the Yankees?

posted by dross | 1:30pm Tuesday April 15, 2008

redsoxjersypic.jpgIf you’re a Yankees fan like me, you probably have yet another reason to hate the Red Sox and their fans.
Last week, it was announced that a Bronx construction worker, Gino Castignoli, working on the new Yankee Stadium, had buried a David Ortiz jersey under concrete in an effort to jinx the beloved New York team. He was outted by some fellow workers who realized what he was up to–but not before the concrete was already poured and set.
Last Friday night while at my local sports bar—packed full of Yankee lovers/Red Sox haters (and one friend who’s a Mets fan), the place was abuzz with what should be done about the situation. Surprisingly, everyone was in agreement that they should dig up the shirt—whether they actually believed in “curses” or not. There were also, of course, a number of opinions expressed as to how Castignoli should be punished–but let’s just say I can’t really print them here. (Though I will say that to varying degrees, they were similar to what Hank Steinbrenner, co-owner and Senior VP of the Yankees, said: “I hope his coworkers kick the s–t out of him.”)

Thankfully, on Sunday, the Yankees did, in fact, dig up the shirt, to the tune of 5 hours and an extra $50,000 in costs. Now there’s talk that the team is going to sue Castignoli, which I hope they do.
What do you think? Do you believe in baseball curses? What should be done to Castignoli?

What is the big deal?
If the shirt was not causing a structial problem with the stadium they should have left it alone.
Why should the dude that buried it have to pay for the foolishness and superstitions of a bunch of baseball nuts that have nothing better to do than dig up ball parks.
Is this the same bunch of sports fans that say that Jimmy Hoffa is still in the endzone at the Meadowlands…?
I think I might put my lucky penny between the floor boards of the Denver Nuggets practice court and thus jinx their chances of ever winning the title…
See how dumb it really sounds?

Why would someone from the Bronx, headquarters of the Yankees, do this?
I am a die hard Yankee fan and get regularly angry about the antics of the no-class red sox fans. I have endless examples, including sox fans, total strangers, that want to fight me because I have a Yankees cap on.
I think it was right to dig it up. We want no problems with the new Cathedral to the greatest franchise ever, that ever was, is and ever will be, in all of professional sports.
I think this guy will get enough punishment from fans and others. We shouldn’t be like the low-life red sox fans and act like idiots. Let’s show some class. The guy knows he messed up. The best revenge, especially vs. the red sox, is beating them on the field. Boston will always be a second-rate city compared to New York. So will the ball team. They know it. We know it. Now we need to beat them so they’ll shut up.

How pathetic. The Yankees haven’t won a championship in years and you say they are the greatest. If you ask me it’s the overblown heads of the Yankee fans and organization that is making them fail. Not the antics of another baseball organization. How childish is that. I moved on after the great pitchers of yesteryear retired. I haven’t looked back. Because until these players realize that life is not measured by how much money they make, they don’t deserve any following from the likes of me.

Though I’m not a big fan of the Yankees, I do respect their decision to dig up the offending jersey. The amount of money being spent to build a perfect stadium for this team and its fans, would have been forever marked with that imperfection.

Whats pathetic is your basing your fandom on the jealousy of others. And yes, I can see how the overblown heads of us fans have contributed to the lack of a championship since 2000. Do you not even realize your own hypocrisy???
I fully hope that guy is sue’d for the $50,000 in costs the yankees had to shell out… no doubt!
