Geri Halliwell ‘Spices’ Up the Bible?

posted by Ellen Leventry | 1:07pm Wednesday May 14, 2008

GeriHalliwellpicforic.jpg“SHOCK! Geri Halliwell ‘rewrites the Bible’,” shrieked the headline accompanying a report in yesterday’s Now Magazine. “How terribly intersting,” I thought, “A member of the biggest-selling female UK group of all time taking on the best-selling book of all time.” But, alas Halliwell, a.k.a. Ginger Spice, wasn’t creating a GPV Bible (Girl Power Version), but rather rewrote parts of Bible passages that were read at her daughter Bluebell’s christening so that they would “read better.”
Her actions may seem a bit odd, as there are many versions with different wordings to choose from, but the very fact that there are so many versions reflects generations of people trying to make the Bible not only fit their dogmatic viewpoint, but “read better.” While the rewritten passages weren’t revealed, it’s hard to believe that Geri’s actions are “shocking.” In fact, what is shocking is that there wasn’t enough real gossip floating around to truly merit the descriptor.

I can’t get over how the grandiosity felt by some celebrities think it entitles them to express expertise on anything and everything…and unfortunately how “sheeple” hang on every word they say. I’m glad it was for a private occasion.
I have every translation of the Bible available on this planet and many were written/paraphrased/moderned up so they “read better”. It is unfortunate that when scribes throughout the centuries changed wording so that it would “read better” they changed some meaning and content. For instance, “The Kingdom of G-d is within you” versus “the kingdom of G-d is among you” are two vastly different ideas.
If the woman wants to ascribe personal meaning of hers to various passages for a private event, who cares? It’s no different than the rest of us getting a different meaning out of passages according to our own lives and events within them…If she goes too far, just look at the second to last verse in Revelation. G-d has addressed this.So worry about something else, like world leaders interjecting themselves into scripture as Christ or others ascribing the persona of the anti-Christ to popular figures.

Good for her!! I am always glad when someone takes the Bible seriously enough to actually pay attention. Even better is when they try to adapt the intent to meet the needs of their lives today. The WORD is not some idle idol to which we must be adhered. It was a living word then and it continues to be a dynamic message for all generations who are listening enough to make it their own.

Yes, Well, who thinks they understand and discern the bible well enough to translate it? Not this lady. The only saving grace is that what she wrote remains private. I have seen some God-awful translations in modern times, where it seems people put in whatever they want to or believe. Take the rapture theory. Written in the late 1800′s by a mentally ill, seriously ill, woman from Europe. People are going to have a rude awakening when they find themselves raptured straight to hell. Remember, we are to put out faith in God, not in Man. Believe in God’s word, not Mans. A good source is “Shepards Chapel” a 5am MST TV show on cable hosted by Paster Arnold Murray. He reads the original texts in their original languages, Greek and Aramaic, to name but two. I would advise anyone who has questions about what I’ve said to tune in to his show. I think, but not sure, that you can also go to ShepardsChapel.com. The key here, we are called upon to use dicernment! Pardon my spelling, please. God Bless and Keep us all, and open our eyes to the truth. There are enough lies floating around out there to float a boat, but we need not believe them. Best of luck to us all,Rebecca

The church is the first re-writer of the Bible. They have shaped the Bible to fit their wants by choosing specific words in translation from the original Aramaic when other translations were most prevalent at the time of Biblical writing. Then later they chose which Gospels we’re included and which they chose to ignore. It has been rewritten by the church councils to fit how they want us to interpret it, not how it was originally written.

The Bible was edited as it was being put together by the early Church. There was the Reformation, the separation of British empire from the Holy Church, add in the differening Christian denominations, all the different language translations, can you be surprised when anyone tries to make it easier for their young child to understand?
Besides could Geri Halawell do any more damge, nit picking, than do far too many of today’s modern Christians?

I agree that this is being blown out of context. I assume she did what scholars did back in the 70′s when ‘The Book’ was published. Unless one is a scholar it is difficult to understand many passages of the Bible. I feel she is setting a good example in taking the time to do this so that family and friends can understand the passages and the meaning behind it. God bless her and her family

It’s called paraphrasing… and I find it a wonderful journalling tool that helps the Bible speak to me personally.
Does anyone besides me get tired of the “correctness police”?

The best translation to trust is the King James version everybody have the right to do their thing but GOD’S earthly saint an angels they adore the truth we know that satan is a liar so are his emissaries no mather in what form they present themselves with our wise hearts and mind we know them being Jesus people how would any of us detect the power of darkness except thru GOD’S word they deny GOD and everything about him well the bible is GOD’S loving letters to his own like Ms Dottie died the gospel singer how can you tell where she goes everything people said about that soul as a child of GOD myself my heart rejoiced my faith renewed GOD is not confusion but peace those who are his own your heart cannot deny I humbly thank GOD so much knowing that I am going to heaven to be with precious souls like Dottie I still pinch myself to see if I am not dreaming because I came from a witchcraft parents whom would go to cemetery to buy souls that’s all I knew since ever I can remember growing up to see soul with my own eyes when my friends said they are mad at me they don’t want to be my friend ever again my answer to them is that you are not the demon I said his name who will have my soul and you are not ice who will keep my body in the morgue who cares that’s how powerful satan is once you are in hands for your soul except Jesus step in and grab you that is your hand breath lies to your heart to keep you busy for one thing and one thing alone your soul so it does not matter what mankind try to do with GOD’S word that matters to GOD is what his people do with that precious book that matters to our GOD

There is a story that a man in preparing to do a public reading explained that he was using the King James Bible. He only read from the King James for it was the Authorized version and it was the only one which was called the Authorized version.
I have always wondered if anyone ever asked him who authorized it?
King James I of England.
Of course, there was an earlier authorized version, The Great Bible. It was authorized by King Henry VIII of England.
And if you will please forgive me an editorial type comment, I really wish that the person who wrote an earlier post had paid more attention in grammar class about sentence structure and need for periods. I got a headache try to decipher it.

HUH? King James NOT a Christian? Give me a break….Anyway, I enthusiastically support anyone who rewrites and edits any translation of the Bible to make it easier to follow. I enjoy the language of the KJV but prefer the New Jerusalem translation for understanding but my preferences are just that….mine. Check out various translations for yourself and don’t be afraid to explore.
