‘Prince Caspian’: Will this Sequel Be Better than “Wardrobe”?

posted by Kris Rasmussen | 12:32pm Thursday May 1, 2008

I can remember being somewhat overwhelmed with the amount of attention given to the big screen adaptation of “Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and I didn’t think it quite lived up to the hype. But I have to admit my anticipation is building for the Narnia sequel “Prince Caspian,” which is in theaters May 16. I have been tracking online reports of both secular and Christian critics who have had inside access to the rough cut, and so far, the word is extremely positive. And then I happened across a recent interview with Douglas Gresham—C.S. Lewis’ stepson who has been involved in both film projects—over at Christianity Today, in which he agrees with critics who say that though the book “Prince Caspian” is often considered substandard to “Wardrobe,” he is confident that the movie version is going to be bigger and better than its cinematic predecessor.

But positive buzz is only one reason why I am convinced “Caspian” has the makings of a critical and commercial success. I believe not having the insane amount of coverage that “Wardrobe” had will actually help the movie find a bigger audience—one that is simply looking for an exciting, well-told adventure story instead of a religious manifesto. I think the “Caspian” storyline also has better supporting characters—namely, Reepicheep and Trumpkin—and a darker tone which lends itself to the screen. Finally, I think it doesn’t hurt that the soundtrack is going to be more haunting and powerful (I absolutely love Switchfoot’s new song “This is Home” which will play over the credits).
If I still haven’t gotten you excited about seeing this film, then be sure to check out the rest of Beliefnet’s great coverageof the movie and I am sure that will convince you to make plans for your return visit to Narnia.
