'God's Pottery' and 'Last Comic Standing': Legit About Jesus?

Wednesday July 9, 2008

godspotterypicforidolchat.jpgLike fellow Beliefnet writer Joanne Brokaw over at Gospel Soundcheck I have noticed the comedy duo "God's Pottery" who have made it to the finals of "Last Comic Standing."

At first, I was simply put off by their over-the-top mannerisms, their "Virginity Rocks" T-shirts and their weird songs such as "The Pants Come Off When The Ring Goes On." The jokes about church community seemed a little 80s to me, but now I have to admit I'm
a little puzzled and more than a little curious. Is God's Pottery really a faux Christian comedy team--or are they truly a pair of believers who are slyly working their way to the top .

At the very least, these two men have obviously grown up with a background in some kind of Christian fundamentalism. But even one of the judges questioned them in the semi-final round about whether they were being serious in their message or not. These guys never break character with so much as a nudge or a wink.

If you're not familiar with them, watch "Last Comic Standing" or check out some concert footage of a performance at my alma mater. Then let us know in the comment box below whether or not you think these guys are mocking Christianity or simply satirizing modern Christian culture.

My, Steve is very preachy. Wonder what kind of "chain-letter" beliefs he is trying to push...

Ok, everybody relax…. Take a breath….Calm down. Obviously some of you have put all so called Christians in a box and have decided we’re all alike. Of course we could do that with every nationality, club and organization. I mean, if a couple of girl scouts come to my house selling cookies and step all over my flower beds and crush my flowers, do I have the right to say that ALL those girl scouts are disrespectful and don’t care about other people’s property? Of course not. Now, I don’t believe that these guys are true followers of Christ but have defiantly been raised around Christianity. Some of you talk about Christians as if you know all about us and all about God. And God is selfish? Self centered? Ok let me get this right….God created Man to have personal communication with Him and man chooses to walk away from God’s great plan of greatness FOR man. Then God sends his son Jesus to die FOR MAN… “God so LOVED the world He gave His only son.” Notice it didn’t say God so loved Himself? God prepares heaven FOR US not Him? Throughout history, God has given, given, given to RESCUE MAN from every stupid thing that we have got ourselves into and people say that He is selfish and self centered? Finally, stay with me here, If God said to you, “here’s two doors, one door leads to a room where people will beat you senseless with clubs and the other door leads to a limo that will take you to Hawaii.” If you choose the door and get clubbed and beat up why does that make God a bad God? My advice? Read the bible and start in the book of John and no matter who you are or what you’ve done…. God still loves you even though He knew you would hate Him anyway.

even if they are not really Christians, little do they know they are still speaking truth

Man, I like these posts on here! Me? I'm with Nick's post. Whenever I run into those peeps(umm, yes, I mean "non-believers")...and they make generalizations about Christians as Bible-Thumpers, tedious, self-righteous, yadda-yadda-yadda... I make a similar analogy as Nick. "OK...would you agree that there are good dentists and not-so-good dentists? Would you agree that there are interior designers who ROCK and others who are an embarrassment? American Idol -- some smashing singing talents have come from that show...but aren't the train-wreck failed auditions a big 'DRAW' for the show?" And on and on...and on. Same thing regarding faith. There are terrific peeps who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ -- and they tend to be "invisible heroes" and pretty low-key... but there are also those who believe...but man -- some things they see fit to do? Their behavior? It's confounding since when you've mature in your faith and the Holy Spirit becomes integrated throughout your soul & being, the absurd, God's Pottery sort of behaviors just don't ...SURVIVE...any more. The ego is diminished and these needs go away. It's wild how the Holy Spirit does that. But ultimately it's the Big Dude's judgement call... I just have a remote control for my TV, that's all!

part of me wants to think they are sincere (re-their refusal to use insults in the 'yo mama' challenge) and part of me thinks it is supposed to be an insult to christianity... I have been trying to figure them out too, not finding much even here. But I loathed Upright Citizens Brigade so no wonder I'm confused. I knew it was a facade, just couldn't tell how deep.
