'God's Pottery' and 'Last Comic Standing': Legit About Jesus?
Like fellow Beliefnet writer Joanne Brokaw over at Gospel Soundcheck I have noticed the comedy duo "God's Pottery" who have made it to the finals of "Last Comic Standing." At first, I was simply put off by their over-the-top mannerisms,...
"Is God's Pottery really a faux Christian comedy team--or are they truly a pair of believers who are slyly working their way to the top whether they are for real or not.
At the very least, these two men have obviously grown up with a background in some kind of Christian fundamentalism."
The answer is "no". I know both of them (one of them I've known for 15 years). They are just very funny, clever, and perceptive.
I took them as a sort of 'Spinal Tap' / Christopher Guest creation (and I mean that as a positive). Whether they believe or not is irrelevant to me; their commentary on contemporary 'Christian' culture is funny.
I've been really disappointed that so many people find the "humor" of God's Pottery to be so appealing. I think it's sad and offensive, and I was glad to see them booted from LCS tonight. I can't imagine that comics in "black face", or fake turbins, or borrowed yamulkes making "Jew jokes" would be so well-recieved. I think it's likely that many people would find those parodies offensive and unacceptable. In a culture that professes tolerance and equal rights and opportunity, jabbing at Christians seems to be the only acceptable form of insult.
I'm not a prude... I enjoyed many of the other comics, and was glad that Eliza won the final round. But it really surprises me how readily people accept this kind of intentionally crass or insulting humor, when there's so much fertile territory aside from that. This is America, so they're free to say and do as they wish... but I'm personally hopeful that their career continues the rest of the way down the drain where it belongs.
Dean,
I'm confused by your answer. "The answer is "no". I know both of them (one of them I've known for 15 years). They are just very funny, clever, and perceptive."
Are you saying "No" they aren't really fake, or "No" they really ARE a true pair of believers? To me they do not seem to be genuine Christians at all or they wouldn't be mocking Christians so badly. Since you said you know them, can you clarify?
I think they are creepy and condescending to be honest.
I'm confused by your answer, Dean - are you saying "No" they aren't fake, or "No" they aren't really a pair of Christians? Personally I think they are condescending and creepy. Can you clarify? I am not sure what you mean.
From what I've seen of this sad season of Last Comic Standing, I cannot be sure whether God's Pottery mocks Christians, or merely pokes fun while representing a message. I found myself comparing them to Esther Ku, whose comedy seems so outdated and self-loathing that I half expected her to put in fake teeth and mispronounce "fried rice" a couple times. They are both obvious acts, intent on making the audience laugh at preconceptions about large groups of people, the biggest difference being that God's Pottery maintained its positive characters, while Esther Ku drew her comedy from one very negative perspective. I give God's Pottery credit for getting a Las Vegas crowd to clap and sing along to "Jesus is the one I love".
I was offended by God's Pottery also. But I kept listening and trying to figure them out, but they do have a good message to young people, and to get a young persons' attention you have to be outrageous these days. I've been trying to figure out if they're sincere, and another thing I've noticed is they weren't afraid to say Jesus. And like the comment above I was excited to see a Las Vegas audience singing and clapping saying Jesus is the One I love! Can you imagine...sitting in Las Vegas smiling and singing that. That can't be wrong. Last night I was praying before sleep having just watched LCS, and a thought came to me "Test the spirits to see if they are of me." God's Pottery has never said anything against God or Jesus, so I'm leaning toward believing they are sincere.
I don't think it really matters what their intentions are. They are poking fun AND presenting a message. They are not saying "flied lice" or anything. They felt so unreal/fake, that they were more real than lots of Christianity peddling their beliefs on television.
Here is a short comment from another website:
"I laughed. I dug up some actual sincere interview comments with these guys (real names - Krister Johnson and Wilson Hall, formerly of the Upright Citizen's Brigade comedy troupe out of NYC) where they're not in character (from a British paper) and they say that one of their goals is to NOT put down Christians and churches. It's sheerly a good-natured spoof from what I'm seeing.

These guys are comedians! They are doing this to make money and elevate themselves, despite what they say. If you happened to notice, they were not just singing "Jesus is the one I love," they were singing "I love Jesus more than anyone else"! What genuine Christian is going to show that kind of pride or sing a song like that in a worship service? If you go to their website and read their answers to questions (real or not real?) you will see that their answers are very confusing and intended to get laughs, not to actually provide enlightenment or real advice.
It's nice that they're poking fun of the hokey things about Christians that many of us are trying to phase out of churches, but ultimately, does their act reinforce these hokey stereotypes or aid in the elimination of those kinds of mannerisms?
for peace in the world go to www.tlig.org and christianunitynow.com
i don't find them offensive..my fiance and I laugh at their COMEDY. it's hysterical! i hope no one is out there actually trying to "peddle" christianity like this in a serious way. If so, i definitely don't want to be attached to it. Christians--learn to laugh at yourselves. God's Pottery is entertaining and over the top. I'm sad to see them go.
I would have laughed because of "God's Pottery" but they simply weren't funny.
These two "comedians" disgust me. I have a very good sense of humor and am very sarcastic, but I don't find any humor in their "songs"- even at pure comedic value. As a Christian, this angers me and saddens me that Americans have embraced them the way they have. What is so humorous in making fun of the Man who died for our sins to give us eternal life? It is sickening. I hope they wake up and repent of their ways before it's too late.
Are they a joke or are they serious.... or are they both?
For those of you Christians who are discomforted by these guys, you should take a good look, because this is what happens when you brain wash your children into believing in a superstition as a way of life.
Look at it this way, say you get a email that is an obvious chain letter. Some of you might not understand this example because a lot of very gullible people respond to chain letters, but even if you do like them sometimes, try and consider that this hypothetical chain letter is just way too dumb for you to waste your time on. The letter says something along the lines of, "If you don't send this letter to 50 other people in the next 24 hours, God will hate you." Before you try to cut me off on where I'm going with this, please try and think about this seriously. A person who claims that God decided to be a discriminatory jerk all of a sudden is telling you to do what he or she says to do, or else. Try and understand that part of my point before you resort to your safety net of excuses about how that isn't the same as Jesus just because you don't want it to be.
These guys are jerks, just like all chain mail authors are jerks, and just like all Christians are jerks. Not in the same way as someone who's being an intentional jerk, but as someone who's just an [anchor and liability to everybody else for being so negligently stupid] kind of jerk. An episode of the old Dick Van Dyke Show comes to mind where Dick's character Rob pulls apart his phone to try to fix it while he's got a prank phone caller on the same line pretending to be from the phone company and helping him fix a noise he hears on the line. Rob was holding the ear piece speaker to his ear with one hand and holding the microphone piece to his mouth with the other awaiting further instruction before he realized his leg was being pulled. Yeah, that's what you are, that kind of jerk.
The Pottery Barn boys are also exactly what you are when you go trying to tell other people or even pretend to yourself that whomever doesn't believe what you believe is going to suffer as a result ( S U P E R S T I O N ). The ones who think they can prove it and claim that they can disprove evolution via clockmaker theory, qualify as reaching full on jackass status via the 'clockmaker looks better working from scratch than he/she/it looks from using a magical easy bake oven' argument.
That said, there is nothing that makes you a jerk just for believing in something. It's only that book that you take your advice from that suggests you spread it like a chain letter with a great amount of baseless confidence and nonsense just like these boys are doing.
Finally, why should I bother pointing this out? What does it matter to me when I don't believe in it? Well, see, it does bother me that so many youth pastors act the way these guys do to brainwash kids. Yes it gets them to enjoy believing in it and all, but some people like myself don't want to be bothered with these superstitions because when I do the math in my head I don't get positive thoughts and rainbows like some of you do, mostly because I can't stop thinking about how pathetically sad and awful it would be if a real God were to be so petty and full of himself. I would feel prouder of myself if i did go to hell at the hands of a god who, if the roles were switched, I'm sure I could do better by. In fact, no god is still better than a fool of a chain letter god. Still, while I would be happy if Christians only let their religion reflect on those who want to believe in it, the fact is that they won't just let it be that way, especially not for their children.
I hate what they are doing, but I hope that they keep on doing it and I especially hope they get other youth pastors to follow their role until one or many of them get outed for some eeevil sin they did behind the scenes, just like Ted Haggard. These are the maniacs that your religion has decided to raise, just so that you could keep pretending that your superstition somehow made you a better person for it. The joke's on you, and I agree, it's not very funny.
My appologies for those of you who are delicate towards poor spelling and/or grammar. I meant to spell out ( S U P E R S T I T I O N )* Again, I'm very sorry.
My, Steve is very preachy. Wonder what kind of "chain-letter" beliefs he is trying to push...
Ok, everybody relax…. Take a breath….Calm down. Obviously some of you have put all so called Christians in a box and have decided we’re all alike. Of course we could do that with every nationality, club and organization. I mean, if a couple of girl scouts come to my house selling cookies and step all over my flower beds and crush my flowers, do I have the right to say that ALL those girl scouts are disrespectful and don’t care about other people’s property? Of course not. Now, I don’t believe that these guys are true followers of Christ but have defiantly been raised around Christianity. Some of you talk about Christians as if you know all about us and all about God. And God is selfish? Self centered? Ok let me get this right….God created Man to have personal communication with Him and man chooses to walk away from God’s great plan of greatness FOR man. Then God sends his son Jesus to die FOR MAN… “God so LOVED the world He gave His only son.” Notice it didn’t say God so loved Himself? God prepares heaven FOR US not Him? Throughout history, God has given, given, given to RESCUE MAN from every stupid thing that we have got ourselves into and people say that He is selfish and self centered? Finally, stay with me here, If God said to you, “here’s two doors, one door leads to a room where people will beat you senseless with clubs and the other door leads to a limo that will take you to Hawaii.” If you choose the door and get clubbed and beat up why does that make God a bad God? My advice? Read the bible and start in the book of John and no matter who you are or what you’ve done…. God still loves you even though He knew you would hate Him anyway.
even if they are not really Christians, little do they know they are still speaking truth
Man, I like these posts on here! Me? I'm with Nick's post. Whenever I run into those peeps(umm, yes, I mean "non-believers")...and they make generalizations about Christians as Bible-Thumpers, tedious, self-righteous, yadda-yadda-yadda... I make a similar analogy as Nick. "OK...would you agree that there are good dentists and not-so-good dentists? Would you agree that there are interior designers who ROCK and others who are an embarrassment? American Idol -- some smashing singing talents have come from that show...but aren't the train-wreck failed auditions a big 'DRAW' for the show?" And on and on...and on. Same thing regarding faith. There are terrific peeps who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ -- and they tend to be "invisible heroes" and pretty low-key... but there are also those who believe...but man -- some things they see fit to do? Their behavior? It's confounding since when you've mature in your faith and the Holy Spirit becomes integrated throughout your soul & being, the absurd, God's Pottery sort of behaviors just don't ...SURVIVE...any more. The ego is diminished and these needs go away. It's wild how the Holy Spirit does that. But ultimately it's the Big Dude's judgement call... I just have a remote control for my TV, that's all!
part of me wants to think they are sincere (re-their refusal to use insults in the 'yo mama' challenge) and part of me thinks it is supposed to be an insult to christianity... I have been trying to figure them out too, not finding much even here. But I loathed Upright Citizens Brigade so no wonder I'm confused. I knew it was a facade, just couldn't tell how deep.
