Kathie Lee Disses Pagans on “Today Show”

posted by lmarcus | 12:20pm Wednesday July 2, 2008

Kathie Lee Gifford is back on TV, hosting the fourth hour of NBC’s mammoth hit “Today Show.” This week, she’s been asking audience members trivia questions about marriage and weddings. One of the questions was about why people traditionally wear rings on the fourth finger, and the “C” answer choice mentioned pagans. Kathie Lee decided to insert her own opinion into the simple reading of the answer choices, mentioning that pagans were “nasty” and “bad.” Clip is below.

That was totally unnecessary, but, sadly, probably comes out of her upbringing and/or out of the mouths of the religious leaders she follows/has followed (of the purely human variety, I mean).

Along similar lines, when they showed video footage on a local tv news program of people gathering at Stonehenge for the Solstice last month, the weatherman commented, “Looks to me like just another reason to get drunk.”

unless you come on Beliefnet or other computer varied religous sites many people do not think that pagan still exist nor did they much past the times of the Bible so please give it the concern it is due.
most western religons where they are Jewish or Christian in nature are not taught anything about pagans except for the ones in the Bible who were always trying to do things the reader would not approve of. in fact it has religous leaders saying very nasty things so why be surprised?

I think the issue is being blown out of proportion.
I watched this from another site and found nothing questionable. the questions were posed for fun. winners recieved a gift bag and those who missed the question got her c.d.
she was asking questions of the marriage guests. many of the questions were traditional bridal question and do’s and don’ts. she would ask a total of three possible questions and the person would guess. The questions were silly as were the other possible questions.
Oh, by the way, i’m Wiccan, one of the Pagan religions. some people need to get over themselves, imo.

Pagans are no more inately bad than are those people of other religions. We all have the good, bad & ugly.
If you look at Kathy Lee it’s obvious we also have the stupid.

Yes, Eve, everyone is entitled to his or her beliefs, which means everyone is entitled to have those beliefs treated respectfully. Calling a religion’s beliefs and its practitioners “nasty” and “bad” is offensive. It is also ignorant. Pagans are deeply spiritual and their beliefs are as sincere and legitimate as yours.

Eve,
Your attitude is the same arrogant idiocy for which Ms Gifford is guilty. If anything the majority group ought to be more considerate, rather than trying to make anyone else feel inferior. I am a Christian too, and frankly, I find her remark embarassing, inappropriate, and a black mark for anyone who would call themselves Children of Christ.

I watched this clip having been primed by the blog entry and saw it in a historical context. She had just talked about the Egyptians and then she used the past tense when referring to pagans…so I think her disapproving comments were directed toward the pagans of yore.
We could argue that there’s no difference between the pagans of today and the pagans of the Bible or of ancient England/Ireland/etc and now, but everybody has skeletons in their religious closet…should modern Christians be associated with the Inquisition?

I am much more offended by the Today Show’s trivialization of marriage to increase watchers. Am I the only one who finds it bizarre that Kathy Lee, whose own marriage has barely held together in the face of Frank’s infidelity, is doing segments on marriage traditions?
I choose not to spend the energy being offended it’s much more fun to be vaguely amused!

Dear Kathy
Pagans are a collective of religions that are not of Christian decents…which include the following groups: Buddhist, Native Americans, Indigenous Spirituality, Hindus,. basically any group that does not follow the teachings of Christ. With this in mind you have insulted a large portion of your viewers since not every all American are Christians.
You need to update your knowledge on what pagan religons include…because even Ancient Egyptains were considered pagans. You demonstrated your ignorance and complete disregard for people who are different. You need to realize America is not a “christian only” country. It has never been and it will never be. America is a melting pot of various groups and this is evolving not only with races and ethnic groups, but religion as well.
It is a shame when someone who lacks knowledge about a particular group decides to make a comment without a single drop of information or fact. You are a tv person, an entertainer who makes a living entertaining a wide range of people. Learn a little and expand your world to include those who are slightly different then you.
Pagans are not all witches…and though some pagans are witches…pagans include a huge selection of spiritual paths…now as far as witches…get some knowledge about that too. Simply because witches were wise women. They were mostly women who were herbologist, nature lovers and wise. They scared christians because they were free thinkers and did not subscribed to the laws created by men who wanted to keep their women under control. Again read your history…and not just the books written by men for the sake of keeping men in power over women. And by the way, the only folks who believed in the devil existed the Christians, because no pagan religion subscribed to the believe that devil was an entity worth worshoping.
In case you doubt my knowledge, I will let you know this much. I am interfaith minister who took the time to learn for 2 years about the different religions that honor God.
God is a parent with many children…and each child worshops and honors God with their own brand of prayer, song, chant and ritual…God does not care which songs we sing, how well we pray…he loves us all equally regards how we honor him.
The only ones having a problem is us…God does not care which religion we have…only our ego has a need to make those divisions…our need to feel superior and better then others is what makes us separate not God.

It is not about religion…it is about all of us following the Truth of what God wishes us to do … and that is to Love One another Unconditionally. Why is that soo hard.

Isn’t it too bad that a Christian can make a negative comment and get so many negative feedbacks while a non christian can make the same comment toward a Christian and get applause. Christian’s should be known by their love, it true but perhaps its time we get a little respect. Pagans believe there are many ways to many gods. Christians beleive there is one way to One God. Incidentally, Jews and Muslims also beleive there is one God, however the path is different. Christians base their faith on grace, Jews and Muslims base their faith on works.

Lee,
I happen to be pagan, specifically Wiccan, and I think that anyone who says something that negative and derogatory about another religion is either completely ignorant, or just a jerk. I have never seen anyone go on national television and make that comment about Christianity, and if they did I am sure it would not meet with applause but outrage. Your comment is nearly as bigoted and uninformed as hers was. Yes pagans have many different gods, because there are many different versions of paganism. Most non-Christian religions are pagan, including Native Americans and Buddhists. Are they all nasty bad people? They would probably be considered heathens by the standards you just spoke of. Please do not continue the cycle of ignorance, think before you speak. This goes for as well as Ms. Gifford.

I am a Pagan. I realize there are numerous people out there who THINK they know what that means. Actually, unless you’re wiccan or of any of the earth religions…you probably don’t. Ms. Gifford seems to think any opinion she has about ANYTHING is the general consenses, which in turn is why she keeps opening her mouth and inserting her foot clear up to where the sun don’t shine!! I am OUTRAGED at her comment, and NOTHING short of a nationally televised appology to the Pagan Community is acceptable!!!!!!

Lee,
the christian faith is identicle to judaism and islam… they’re each based on archaic, hate-filled storybooks written by a bunch of arrogant, hateful biggotted old men. the best that can be said is the new testament has the decency to at least feign decency and with its thin veneer of ‘love’. Of course, nothing can disguise their obession with blood sacrifice.
Just like yours, the pagans made up their religion based on a collection of earlier myths… the difference being they CELEBRATE their creativity, while christians and muslims claim absolute knowledge and authority… so there’s no suprise the KLG said what she did. Christian humility is a facade over arrogance surpassed only by islamic fundamentalists.

I saw the original broadcast, and as a woman raised in the pagan faith, I was enraged. I am not a typical viewer of The Today Show, in fact, I was with my mother and sister, and mom happened to be watching the show. At first we were laughing at the fact that the ‘losers’ of the cute little wedding quizzes were subject to Kathy Lee’s awful singing (the ‘prize’ was her latest CD) and that laughter turned to 3 angry pagan women. I personally think that as a community nation wide,we proud pagans should flood the network with letters, emails and phone calls demanding an apology, and perhaps a pagan show guest to educate the very clueless Kathy Lee.
Now, blessed be!

I did not see the show as I live in the UK…..But I also am outraged by the comments made by the airhead. I am also a pagan and have been for most of my life. Maybe she should find out a little about us before she calls us bad, evil or anything else. We believe in and respect the earth, sun, moon and nature, if we call ourselves pagan or wicca it is because we believe in something that was around thousands of years before christianity…….I mean this earth we inhabit today and that we are caretakers of for generations to come.
Blessed be and may the blessings of thr God and Goddess be with you for now and forever.

Hater lady. What a prejudice. She hates witches and pagans. If you ought to know our kind is not bad or evil.We are good people. And we are not nasty we believe it’s just natural. And the three monotheistic Faiths, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism all have pagan DNA and roots. And witchcraft and paganism can be dated back generations before those monotheism religions, in the Paleolithic era.And even the so-called “Christian” holidays of Christmas and Easter has pagan origins. Christmas came from the Norse pagan holiday of Yule, and Easter came from the Anglo-Saxon holiday of Ostara.
So shut the fuck up u stupid hater woman.
