Miley Cyrus: A Week of Sex, God, and a Slip of the Finger

posted by Kris Rasmussen | 11:00am Friday July 18, 2008

mileycyruspicforic.jpgWhile Miley Cyrus is on the cover of the latest issue of TV Guide Magazine promoting her new album and new movie–as well as virginity and the fact that God is one of the seven things she can’t do without–I can’t say it’s been a great week for Miley in the press.
Though the Vanity Fair photo shoot scandal has died down somewhat, photos of Miley in a wet t-shirt and in some other strange poses found their way to the Internet recently. This was followed by an announcement by Katy “I Kissed a Girl” Perry that Miley is the one girl celeb she wants to smooch. And then there was the crude gesture that a tabloid report alleges she made with her finger to the paparazzi while at an amusement park.
Yes, the Disney Darling has had a very busy week, indeed, which signals to me the Miley Marketing Machine needs to take a break.

As often as Miley proclaims her well-intended desire to be a role model, I continue to feel like she is headed for a huge fall, as it seems like the number of people in Hollywood conspiring to help knock the pedestal out from under her is growing. No human being can live up to this kind of ever-increasing scrutiny– especially at 15-years-old. She will continue to make mistakes that are normal for a teenager to make and yet suffer slings and arrows as the media blows them all out of proportion.
What I am wondering is why no one in her camp has thought of the wisdom that less could be more in this case. If Miley was maybe doing fewer appearances, fewer photo shoots, and disappeared off of the red carpet for just a bit, it would actually create a healthier buzz. Before you know, we would all have had a chance to miss Miley for a change and she would have a chance to mature with a little privacy, and possibly come back into the limelight with something more substantial to share with America’s youth. I really do believe she is a strong young woman with something important to say, but I just can’t hear it over the cash registers selling Hannah Montana bed sheets and hand bags.

If you find a site with this rude gesture let me know. I found one site yesterday but can not find it today. The rude gesture is the peace sign!!! Her expression was normal and happy. This is why all the sites reporting it do not want to show the picture. The picture would prove the story to be bogus.
I agree with you that the media is going into overdrive to bring her down. It seems like everyone is using her name to get attention. The worse part is that they don’t seem to care how much harm it causes her.

You are so right about the gesture. The same is true about the pictures. The pictures are old but are being leaked out a few at a time to make it seem that she is still posting pictures. I don’t understand why people distort so much about her. As for the pictures I have not seen one yet that I could not show my mother. You can see much more on the beach or in any shopping mall. I really admire the girl.

she’s only 15, i think people forget that fact, it’s probably alot easier being in the limelight when your an adult but when your basically still a child.

As the other comments pointed the “crude gesture” is of her giving the peace sign. The picture just shows her giving it with her palm facing inwards which in England is considered rude or a defiant gesture. It was the British tabloids/blogs that made a big deal of it. They forget or ignore the fact that a 15 year old American girl wouldn’t know that, heck I didn’t know it until I looked it up.

I think that she is loosing it. her music is not as good and why would you even take the pics. I mean I really agree that she should take a brake. A really LONG brake. Its not that I don’t like her it is just I think that she can not handle the pressure and all that stuff. I know that she is just 15 but as you can she there are actress and actors that did not do any of that stuff. Like many of the older actresses and actors in the 1930s etc. Now that’s all I’m going to say but hopefully all of you people will not think even if you are just 15 you don’t do that kind of stuff, and she was doing the inappropriate sine in to the media.

I agree with the whole less is more statement. Now I am no fan of Brittany Spears but I believe the same thing can work for her. If she just stay undercover for the rest of the year of 2008 she be fine and healthy. It would give her time to heal mentally and emotionally, it would give everyone a chance to miss her, and when she came back as fresh and clean she would be back on top. I say she should make more music good or bad I don’t care. The bottom line is Brittany Spears sells when she is crazy and when she is sane.

For all the scrutiny and other crap she takes, she’s earning every penny of the estimated $1B she’s going to earn in the next three years. I don’t begrudge her a cent. I can’t say I would mind that much money, but I wouldn’t go through what she does for it.
Keep your chin up, Miley. I don’t know anything about your music and have never watched your show, but I’m a fan anyway.

since when is a peace sign a crude symbol? just shows that the paparazzi or the media or whatever love to turn everything to a negative to sensationalize their news. miley is a sweetheart and absolutely normal.

Okay, I appreciate the loyalty of Miley fans , but let me make a couple of things clear.
One, the peace sign is not the photo that i am referencing. I agree that the questionable photo is down now and not on the internet. However, it ( the photo) was fuzzzy enough as to be unclear as to what was going on. The intent of the post was simply to point out the level of scrutiny she is going through .
Secondly, regardless of the truth of the situation, there are rules of conduct for this thread and I have had to delete some poats already. So if you are going to rant, please do so civilly. :-)

Here comes the usual, “Why do we care?”. comment. If a celebrity either acts stupidly or badly, why do we care? Is it schaenfraude, or are our own lives so empty and pointless that we need to be voyeurs? And yes, I read the article and am responding, so I am not totally immune to the phenomena. And in the case of people like Paris Hilton, who are pure marketing phenomena, we should feel really embarrassed at being taken in.
Oh well, that is the nature of the spin-machine, selling us their warez.

For a 15 yr old promoting purity, she shouldn’t be taking pics in a shower with only a tshirt on. These pics were supposedly taken by her boyfriend. Well, I can tell you that if my 15 yr old were posing in the shower for her boyfriend with nothing on but a tshirt, she would be punished and the boy wouldn’t be at my house. Normal teenager behavior, I don’t think so. Not a teenager promoting purtity. That is what is wrong with today’s society. Leave her alone because she is 15 and doesn’t know any better. Bull crap….My 15 yr old teenage daughter used to idolize Miley Cyrus…now she just thinks she is cheap and wants nothing to do with her. Billy Ray needs to step in and put the reigns on his child before she ends up another Lindsey, Britney etc. I don’t believe the woe is me attempt she is making any more than I believe the purity ring is for real or the fact that she actually carries a bible with her everywhere she goes.

I’ve seen the shower picture. It looks like it was taken at a gym or some such. The soap dispenser on the wall was pretty much a giveaway that this wasn’t your typical shower in your typical bathroom.
And while I agree that Miley is talented, she’s still only 15 years old. Unfortunately, the “Disney” treatment will chew a person up and spit them out.
