Well, I guess we need to be reminded to “Remember the Titans”. Personally, I thought it was much more inspiring than “Friday Night Lights”. It’s an excellent story about uniting for a common purpose and a wonderful example of how we can celebrate our differences.
ALSO, there is a movie from the 80s that I believe should really be on the list. “Victory” – it is a soccer movie about prisoners of war starring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Pele. If you haven’t seen it, you should.
I completely agree about Chariots of Fire.

My, two grandchildren agreed with their dear old Grammie, “ANGELS IN THE OUT FIELD” should also be recalled in this fine group. It was sports and compassion. We thought it was basically much more than about baseball, it was about learning to believe in God’s Angel’s and miracles happening on earth for two orphaned children.

Though it was not a youth friendly movie…” North Dallas Forty” was a great adult film from back in the day. With the lesson that if you pretend to be someone your not, eventually, you will lose yourself and become someone else. Some times standing up for who you are is worth the cost.

Brian’s Song with Bily D. Williams and Remember The Titans with Denzel Washington. Award winning performances and messages of character, dignity and integrity; which most teens today and many adults are lacking, are key in these movies. Some of the movies selected are good, but for deeper meaning and teaching tools, these two must be added.

Vision Quest: the name says it all. It’s about maturing and making choices. The sports theme is about dedication in pursuit of an ultimate goal… giving up everything, including a full-ride scholarship to prove if only to himself that he is that good.
Bad News Bears… a group of losers that learns to be a team. That’s a classic formula that works over and over again.

THEY STARTED OUT HATING EACH OTHER AND BY THE END THEY WERE A TRUE TEAM. THEY REALIZED HOW UNFAIR IT WAS TO TREAT EACH OTHER THE WAY THEY HAD. THE BEST SCENE IS WHEN THE TWO MAIN RIVALS ARE ON THE FIELD HOLLERING AT EACH OTHER AND THAT IS WHEN YOU REALIZE THAT THEY ARE TRULY A TEAM AND NOT JUST INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE ANYMORE.

Facing the Giants!!! A MUST on any list of inspirational sports movies, totally faith-based story and very, very touching and inspiring. A team beats the odds lead by a God-fearing, Christian Coach by putting the Lord first in their efforts. The coach faces opposition in his personal life and many setbacks, risking everything only to triumph with God’s help.
Brian’s Song, the first version with Billy Dee Williams & James Caan, I think was the better of the movies. This is based on the true story of Brian Piccolo who struggled to make it to first string with the Chicago Bears, only to have his career cut short by lung cancer. Brian and Gayle Sayers (Williams) were the first players who were black & white to be roommates in the NFL. Very touching and makes me tear up every time I think of the theme music.

Hi: Also among the missed: “The Legend of Bagger Vance” (2000)
posted July 24, 2008 at 2:08 pm
One comes to mind that you missed: “The Sandlot”. It’s about a time in America, a simpler time, when kids–boys–only needed a few friends, a ball, a glove, a bat and a patch of dirt in order to amuse themselves for hours–for a whole summer. It’s about a time when kids created their own fun, before our current age of “pre-fab fun”, a time when kids played ball because they loved the game, not because their parents put them in some league and forced them to sell pizzas to buy uniforms. It’s about friendship, loyalty and dedication. One of the coolest scenes in any movie is where the boys are playing a “night game” on the 4th of July, their sandlot illuminated by a fireworks display, while the soundtrack is playing Ray Charles’s cover of “America the Beautiful”. It had other spiritual side-themes as well, such as family, and how a kid and a step-parent can find a way to be family together. It also (quietly) touched on issues of race, as the “sandlot” team included a boy who was African-American (the pitcher), and one who was Hispanic, Bennie Rodriguez. They also befriended a former Negro League star, played by James Earl Jones.
By the way, a couple of errors in the comment on “Bull Durham” (maybe the best baseball movie ever): Susan Sarandon’s character was named “Annie Savoy”, not “Annie Price”. And Kevin Costner’s “Crash” Davis (we never hear his real name in the movie–cool!) came to the Durham Bulls as a player–a catcher–not a coach. Near the end of the movie, when he was being cut from the Bulls, the manager told him there may be an opening for a manager the next season on another minor league team, but he wasn’t a coach when he came to the Bulls.
posted July 24, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Oh yes–”Chariots of Fire”–how could I have forgotten that one? A man stands up for what he believes and doesn’t waver, even in the face of tremendous pressure, risking everything he’s dreamed of and worked for his whole life. Never mind the fact that I disagree with Eric Liddell’s (sp?) literalistic interpretation of the law to honor the Sabbath. We don’t see many people willing to take that kind of risk for what they believe, at least not here in the west. The theme of how a person copes with prejudice and racism, specifically anti-Semitism, is pretty important in that movie too.

Andy mentioned two of the things that made CHARIOTS OF FIRE such an outstanding movie. In addition to these, it is a true story, and many of us would say that God honored Eric’s “sacrifice” by prompting a teammate who had already won a gold medal to pull out and let Eric run in his place. How many athletes would do that these days? To top it off, Eric Liddell FALLS DOWN, gets up and starts running again and WINS! Coupled with the fantastic musical score, if that doesn’t give you chills, bring tears to your eyes, and make you proud to be a human being, I don’t know what will! During the race you hear Eric Liddell’s voice talking about how he loves to run, and how he feels God’s pleasure when he runs.
My son was a high school distnce runner when this movie came out, and the night before every meet he would play this movie, and I would see the same look on his face that the actor playing Eric Liddle had on HIS face…the joy of running, the joy of running fast, and feeling God’s pleasure as he ran.

Brian’s Song!! This film was based on the friendship that developed between Chicago Bears teamates Brian Piccolo (white) and Gale Sayer (black). Taking place in the late 1960′s – early 1970′s this was truly quite unheard of. Their relationship becomes quite beautiful when Brian develops cancer and Gale takes care of him. I still cry every time I watch this movie!

Yes, Ginger, I’m glad you mentioned what you did about “Chariots of Fire”. That’s a great scene, where Eric is knocked down in a race, and you hear Sam Mussabini (sp?) growling, “C’mon lad, get up!” Then after Eric wins then collapses and gasps for air, Sam helps him up while saying, “That wasn’t the prettiest quarter I’ve ever seen, but it certainly was the bravest.” That scene gave an example of how being a Christian doesn’t make you weak. Eric had the strength of character not to let another runner’s dirty play defeat him, and he also had the strength of character not to sink to the other guy’s level and take revenge. How would that play today in professional sports, say, in professional hockey? Heck, it’s the “enforcers” and “goons” that sell tickets!

Your list is shorter for not having included, Breaking Away (1979), a delightfully told story of hometown heros, dreams of wonder and the excitement of a race. Mix in liberal portions of friendship, family, love, competition, class struggle and there you have it — an inspirational and exciting story, well-told.
Be well, do good work and be safe…

I can’t believe you would have Mighty Ducks on your list! What about “Remember the Titans”, “Glory Road”, “Chariots of Fire” and “Brian’s Song”!! Geez, what were you thinking??

How in the world could you include “The Mighty Ducks” and yet omit “Chariots of Fire?” This movie has great tension between the two male leads, and shows the importance of living up to one’s principles. I loved it. I also would have liked to have seen “Brian’s Song,” an important movie about desegration in pro-football, and “Ice Castles,” about persevering after serious injury, make you list. You had some clunkers on there that these three could have easily replaced (“Rudy?” Oh, spare me. “Bull Durham” is hilarious but not insprining). Pretty good list overall though.

One more that should be on your list – “Jerry Maquire,” Tom Cruise’s best film and one of the best films about football ever made. Redemption all around for the three main leads in the winning story nominated for multiple Oscars – how could you forget it?

Hey what about the original “Brian’s Song” with james Caan…c’mon guys, remeber ‘racial tension’…man this movie was a beautiful tribute to brotherly love of the most needed kind

Has your brain gone lame? Or, are you being paid an advertizing fee for artificially including certain films in the mix. When you have soooooo many movies about REAL people, you come up with the Mighty Ducks?
Now, without a doubt the number one all time “sports movie” has to be Brian’s Song. It is not only a true story, has some real-life people playing themselves in the movie, and it could make one of those Buckingham Palace guards shed a tear.
And, the other fiction movies (like Karate Kid and Field of Dreams) were good movies. Yet, when there are so many true stories from a day gone by that would be well received to day, if it weren’t for a lack of financial reward to you people for promoting them, it seems you have done a true disservice to all. The Jim Thorpe story comes to mind. He was perhaps the best all-around athlete of all time — and in a day before steriods had been invented. How about the Stratton Story, a fellow that lost a leg in a hunting accident and wanted to play baseball again. Or maybe Grover Cleveland Alexander — a movie about a real-life epileptic alcholoic pitcher in the 20′s whose records still stand today? And what? No Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig? Well, at least you included Rudy.

Maybe it was too ” Old School” for the people who compiled this list.

They won 2cd in the nation without their BEST PLAYER !!! ..what more could you want? It promoted education & told what happened with the guys later…
And yes, they really did DANCE !!!…I’ve watched it numerous times & I don’t even care much about sports. MY sis bought it , & she HATES sports!..Knock off one of the sappy ficticious stories & give this movie the place it deserves !!!

I can’t believe that such a plethora of baseball/football movies outshone a little beauty of a movie called “Without Limits”. The true story of (probably) America’s greatest Distance Runner, cut down tragically in the prime of his life. But what he achieves and lives during his short but brilliant time on this planet is what I call INSPIRATIONAL. And for all you philosophers out there, there is fodder a-plenty on the subject of personal belief, and faith in yourself. Do yourself a favour, go and watch it. Then read about him. Anyone who is, or was, a runner will never be the same after.
P.S. The movie was produced by Tom Cruise, who was set to play the main role, but for some reason he didn’t – but it was for the best as Billy Crudup (think Almost Famous) is beyond freakishly and uncannily the spitting image of Prefontaine, right down to the self conscious flick of hair on the start line…

Hi You forgot The Bad News Bears!! That was a classic and very inspirational about a team and teamwork in general!! I grew up with that movie during my T Ball and during my years playing softball in school!! Thanks for the good list but most of these are newer in last 20 years and I have not seen them yet! Isn’t there any good ski movies out from the last fifty years? I know there are some good older ski movies with a story!?

I agree with previous comments that “Remember the Titans” is right up there with the best. My #1 favorite, however, is “Glory Road” – true story of how a “dying” Texas high-school basketball team hires a new coach who recruits black students to bring the team back to life – unheard of at that time in history. It covers the intense racialism these black players endured and how they rose to victory. Great music track and beautiful songs by Alisha Keys. Every time I see it is just as intense and and meaningful – I always cry. A must see!!!
Also a favorite is “Indivincible” another true story about how the Philadephia Eagles have a public tryout for players because the team is doing so poorly. Mark Wahlberg is outstanding playing the key character. Anyone who is into football will love this movie. Don’t forget to watch the EXTRAS on both of these films.

I know it’s old (1971), short (90+ min), and “made for TV” but I will always remember the first time I saw “Brian’s Song”. It so happens that it first aired on my 21st birthday and being a family of true foootball fanatics we had dinner, cake and a movie that night! Based on a true story of the short life of Brian Piccolo and his Chicago Bears’ team mate Gayle Sayres it is an inspiring story of determination, friendship, racial harmony and courage. I’ve seen it many times since and it never fails to move me. If you have never seen it I hope you will!

I loved all the Rocky movies, especially Rocky III. Awsome music in training to Eye of the Tiger. Rocky Balboa is awsome too. Theme, NEVER GIVE UP.
Also Bang the Drum Slowly. About a baseball player who discovers he has Hodgins desease and a friend who sticks with him through his illnes.

You named all of the best sports movies that have been made. But you should increase your list to the top fifty or the top 100, because that is how many inspiring sports movies have been made in the past fifty years. Two movies that you should have considered were Brian’s Song about The Chicago Bears football player Brian Piccolo, and Prefontaine, which was about Steve Prefontaine, the University of Oregon’s running sensation!!!
