Must-See TV: McCain and Obama at Saddleback Church

posted by Douglas Howe | 12:00pm Thursday August 14, 2008

rickwarrenpicforic.jpgWell, if you’re tiring of the Olympics, or can’t afford the gas to drive to a movie theatre, or can’t afford the popcorn after you buy the gas, there’ll be a relevant, interesting, and hopefully inspiring show that you can see live via webcast on Saturday night.
This will be a first-of-its-kind event where both presumed presidential nominees, Barack Obama and John McCain, will be interviewed by Rick Warren, the founder and pastor of the church and author of best-selling, “The Purpose-Driven Life”,
Saddleback Community Church and CNN will be airing the “Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency,” direct from Orange County, California, Saturday evening at 8 p.m. EDT, and you’ll be able to watch it through their website.

One group that is sure to be watching will be evangelicals. Rev. Warren has promoted the event through his Purpose-Driven network of churches around the country, and has also solicited input from some Pastors. I received an e-mail Monday asking me what question I would ask if I was moderating the event.
“What question would you ask BOTH candidates if you had the chance? Please frame your question in a way that it could be asked of both candidates,” it said. “This would be a great help to me.”
He also communicated the spirit of the event: “We’re in this together. I also ask you to pray I’ll have the necessary wisdom. This will be an historic event. Never have the two candidates been interviewed by a pastor in a church. It will be a great day for all churches, showing the importance of the local church being at the civil table.”
If you’d like to comment on what you would like to see asked, log on to Beliefnet’s forum about the event.
Rev. Warren will then give a “message to the nation” on Sunday, titled “The Kind of Leadership America Needs,” at noon and 2 pm EST. I hope you’ll tune in to both–I think they’ll be among the few “must see TV” events of the campaign!

I would like for them to be asked about the Fair Tax. It is a bill before congress now to elimenate the IRS and go to a National retail sales tax. This is party neutral and will bring revenue in from people not paying tases (illegals) and tourist. It will bring industry back to America because the corporate taxes go away as well sa all the other payroll, death and investment taxes. I would love to see why they will not so much as read the book to understand it and theimportance of this bill passing.

Ask each: Do you believe that your comments or behavior in private or public have ever shown disrespect towards women? Then ask: do you think it is fair for people to believe that a man’s treatment of his wife reflects his attirude towards women?

I hope the fact that this event is happening at Rick Warren’s church signals the complete and final marginalization of the right-wing fanatics who have sought for so long to be the (ugly) face of evangelicalism in America.
The best thing that could come out of this would be for the mainstream news media to NO LONGER consider James Dobson or the AFA as representing the views of American evangelicals.

Well, Virginia, there is no Santa Clause. That is, you don’t get anything for free in a global economy.
The fallaciously titled “Fair Tax” disproportionately burdens the poor. A millionaire may buy a boat or he may not. But both he and the poor man will need food, shelter, and other sustainables. But as a proportion of their income, the “Fair Tax” is unfair.
For the millionaire, a national retail tax is insignificant compared to his total worth. For the pauper, however, it can be a real and significant percentage.
The reality is that the government needs tax income so that you can drive on roads, go to emergency rooms, get a free public education, and so that we may defend our shores. Lifting taxes on corporations and wealthy individuals and entities does not stimulate the economy.
When poor and middle class folks don’t have any money to spend, THAT’s when the economy grinds down and hurts us all.

To the latest critic of the Fair Tax: understand that there is a pre-bate for must haves, including food.

I really like the fresh perpective you did on the issue. Really was not expecting that when I started off studying. Your concepts were easy to understand that I wondered why I never looked at it before. Glad to know that there’s an individual out there that definitely understands what he’s discussing. Great job
