Steven Curtis Chapman Inspires on Larry King

posted by Douglas Howe | 1:00pm Monday August 11, 2008

stevecurstischapmanpicforic.jpgEarlier this summer, a celebrity’s son ran over his daughter in a car. The daughter was killed. The son had to deal with the guilt.
And, the celebrity is a Christian singer who is gifted, beloved and above reproach, a clear star through over two decades. And the daughter was adopted from China.
Last Thursday evening, Larry King devoted his “Larry King Live” program to interviewing Steven Curtis Chapman, his wife and three surviving children, including the one who was driving. The questions–from Mr. King and internet contributors–were relevant, contemplative and unflinching:
“Are you mad at God for what happened?”
“How can you still sing about God even though He didn’t protect you?”
“Who do you blame for this?”
“How do you move on from something like this?”
“Why are you willing to speak so publicly about something so private?
“Will you adopt again?”

The conversation showed a family showing the fruits of sustaining faith in the midst of absolute tragedy and the relentless feelings that follow. This is the kind of wonderful television and inspiring faith-program that makes for real news-making! I’d take an hour of this over any three hours of foreclosures, Favre, Iraq, Obamicans or McCain/Paris Hilton.
At a time when faith leaders only make the news when there’s a scandal (Mrs. Joel Osteen is the latest), this was wonderfully inspiring, and provided hope for all who are reconciling their faith with tough times.
Mr. Chapman and I were once singing and speaking on the same program together, and I felt then that he was authentic and a sincere a performer–on-stage and off–as anyone I’ve ever met. I saw the same guy on TV last week, shining bright, inspiring the audience, and even Mr. King himself. “We do have a comfort and a hope,” he said, “although we don’t have answers.”

I saw the interview and it could not have been better. Steven and family were real and honest about their pain. No prerehearsed pep talk from anyone. SCC has always been an inspiration to those who listen to Christian music. Now he and his family are inspirations to the world. It is a platform that they would give back in a heartbeat to have Maria back. But it is a platform that will allow the gospel message to be spread to a wider audience. God will use this and he will make sure that good comes out of it. This is true faith in action. May God bless SCC and his family abundantly, now in their time of need and beyond.

WILL FRANKLIN THIS ONE IS FOR YOU!!
I can not imagine the hurt and pain you are going through, everyday your mind questions “why” and “if only”. I’m here to tell you that God is still with you, He doesn’t hate you and He doesn’t blame you. Instead God loves you, He is there grieving with you, He is there to comfort you and hold you in his arms. God feels your pain and is by your side. He will never leave you. God wants you to hold on to his promises and move forward with your life without the guilt. He will replace your guilt with peace. This promise says so in Philippians 4:4-7.
Will Franklin you need to be reminded that God loves you and He knows the plans He has for you, His plans are to prosper you not to harm you, His plans are to give you a hope and a future. You will find this promise in Jeremiah 29:11. Keep God’s promises close to your heart.
God gives us choices, we can allow our circumstances to control us or allow God to control our circumstances through His acceptance, forgiveness, and love.
I know this firsthand because of the tragedy’s I suffered in my life. God wrapped me in the miracle of His love and forgiveness when I thought my life was over. A friend had to remind me how much God loved me and to hold on to His promises in my heart. I can say with all honesty that God brought me out of the pit of my tragedy and brought me full circle to experience the miracle of blessings that has come from it. I would have missed it if I chose to allow my circumstances to control my life. Thank God for my friend who had the wisdom to call me that night.
I’m writing this because I want to be that friend to you. God will bring you full circle Will Franklin. He will show you how to cope so you can teach others the miracle of blessings from your life tragedy. God is there for you and always will be!
